Delayed gleeful post of the stories I received for Yuletide 2013 because as soon as I posted the last entry about writing treats, we got a call about a death in the family, and I've been away dealing with that. Great way to end the year, yeah? Fuck death.

I received two stories about two very different characters I adore beyond the telling of it:

A Basket Full of Feelings (1186 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dance Academy
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Abigail Armstrong, Kat Karamakov, Sammy Lieberman, Ollie Lloyd
Summary:

Abigail Armstrong doesn't want to fall in love, no matter how superficially or trivially she does it. All she cares about is dance. But it seems as though she can't have one without the other.

ABIGAIL! I love Abigail so much, her dreams and her drive and all the hard work she puts into her dancing and all her anger. This story captures her very well, and through her, reflects fantastic bits of Kat, Sammy, and Ollie as well.

shine bright (1164 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Protector of the Small - Tamora Pierce
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Keladry of Mindelan, Raoul of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak, Tobeis Boon
Summary:

the sky is electric blue

Kel is a very different character from Abigail in a very, very different world, but in writing this, I've just realized that the things I love best about them (their stubbornness, their drive, their hard work), they actually share. That's awesome. Kel here works, and works hard, as she always does, and the reward she receives at the end means even more work for her, and it is the perfect position for her to fill. Kel. <3

Okay, yeah, the AO3 share thing is awesome. AWESOME.

Below the cut, recs for: Zombieland, Old Spice Guy, Valdemar, Up, Scooby Doo, Tortall, Mary Poppins/Tipping the Velvet, Saving Face, Settlers of Catan, Sons of Anarchy, Stephanie Plum, Dresden Files/Sparrow Hill Road, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Sharktopus, Secrets of NIMH, Princess Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Practical Magic, and Pitch Black.

Don't forget, if you can guess one of the five stories I wrote, you win a prize. (Three new fandoms, two old; three over 2000 words, two over 1000 words; two gen, three that are either het or slash.)

J is mocking me because I am apparently drugged on medicine for my sinus problems, so if these read as weird recs, sorry about that. I will have to go back and reread them when I'm not on drugs anymore.

Fandom: Nancy Drew

The Case of the Cunning Linguist
Summary: Oh, the things Nancy Drew is clueless about.

This is hilarious and witty, slyly poking fun at all the ways the source material was completely over the top when it came to Nancy while also teasing with the things Nancy doesn't know but Bess and George absolutely do.

Fandom: Up

We'll Make It a Joint Venture
Summary: Adventure is sometimes found close to home.

I should have known better than to read a story about Ellie and Carl. Much like the movie did, this reduced me to tears and a tight squeezing of my heart, joy and grief all in one. It's a collection of lovely little scenes of their adventures and makes me wish, again, that we had gotten more Ellie in the movie.

Fandom: TV Commercials

Electric Sheep

Flo has an adventure and it is amazing.

Fandom: True Blood

The Joy of the Internet
Summary: Pam is tired of having to deal with Eric and Godric acting like lovesick teenagers.

Pam writes Eric/Godric fanfic for the show True Blood which has left out a lot of the truths of their world. This is AWESOME.

Some Crazy, Random, Happenstance Bullshit That All Turned Out Okay
Summary: Lafayette has a couple of days that are a little bit eventful, even for him.

Basically, Lafayette is goddamn awesome and finally gets what he deserves.

Fandom: Tortall - Pierce

Faith and the Lockpicks He Carries
Summary: Alanna unrolled the parchment, eyes flying over the words. After finishing, she stared at the fire, crumpling the parchment in her hand. Myles had gone missing.

This is an awesome, long, plotty story about Alanna and George working together and working apart and all the adventures that Corus can hold.

Fandom: Dirty Dancing

A Real Grown-Up Name
Summary: Frances Houseman always wanted to change the world.

Each section of this amazing story opens with reference to a landmark Supreme Court case. I can't put into words how much this story means to me or how much I needed to read it right now, but it is amazing and important and absolutely lovely.

Fandom: D.E.B.S.

A Logical Extension
Summary: "Crime is a logical extension of the sort of behavior that is often considered perfectly respectable in legitimate business." - Robert Rice

Lucy Diamond is amazing here, absolutely pitch perfect.

Fandom: The Simpsons

Better than a Dream
Summary: Lisa's social life improves once Juliet Hobbes (from s20e09, "Lisa the Drama Queen") arrives.

A lovely continuation of a beautiful, sad, and sweet episode. I absolutely adore college-age Lisa.

Fandom: The Vampire Diaries

House of Illusion
Summary: Katherine only wants a family. The Salvatore brothers will more than do. Warning for dub-con incest. TV canon only.

This is incredible, Katherine's desires and the way that, for a moment, not only does it look like her plan will work but I found myself rooting for her, hoping she would succeed, my breath caught in my throat while I read.

My Heart Upon My Sleeve
Summary: It's always about Katherine. Except when it's not.

Lovely, lovely Bonnie story with Bonnie being awesome and her family being amazing.

Fandom: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants - Brashares

Painting the Chair
Summary: Lena's first art show leads to her drawing her friends, but what cannot be hidden if she is to draw a true picture?

There are places where this story is rough, edges that need smoothing, but there are also places where the writing is so perfect and clear, these little shocky moments of just true, lovely storytelling when Lena sees pieces of her friends. Overall, it's a lovely story.

Fandom: Jurassic Park

In the Blink of a Thunderbird
Summary: Billy Brennan discovers that what can wound can also heal you. Alan Grant discovers thunderbirds in Arizona.

This is a fun, interesting, slightly heartbreaking story about obsession and finding your place to die and monsters above.

(re: re:) Remember me?
Summary: Roughly a year after the events on Isla Nublar, academic considerations reunite Drs. Grant and Malcolm. Sort of.

Malcolm is hilarious in this fantastic epistolary story.

Fandom: Sons of Anarchy

Hole in My Heart
Summary: Gemma reflects. *Spoilers* through the end of Season Two.

This is a gorgeous, angry story that is pure, pure Gemma.

More Than Kin and Less Than Kind
Summary: Tara's life isn't an episode of The Wonder Years; it never has been and it never will be. Charming to Chicago is a rough road.

This is so perfectly Tara, sharp and sad and scared and strong and just absolutely amazing.

Fandom: Calvin & Hobbes

Every Day is a Reminder
Summary: There's a certain fear that some children share as they grow up, that whatever they do will never be as good as what's come before. Among all the other things he will ever be, Calvin has never been one of those kids.

God, this story is perfect, Calvin and Susie growing up and making decisions and Hobbes always there.

Fandom: Little Red Riding Hood

The Path of Thorns
Summary: Once upon a time, there was a witch, a wolf, and a little girl.

Gorgeous mixing of fairy tales and women with power and magic.

You guys, maybe this is just because I am sick, but there have been a couple of recommendations for a couple of my Yuletide fics which had me near tears because they were so beautiful and made my stories sound so glorious. I am saving them so I can go profusely thank the reccers after the reveal.

Fandom: Friday Night Lights

Fades, If You Let It
Summary: It's not very big, and it's certainly not set up to hold a few dozen people, but somehow here they all are at Tim's small ranch house... Five years later, a reunion of the Dillion State Champs.

This is a lovely story, sharp and soft at the same time, a little bittersweet, but mostly just sweet and happy and totally in character.

tennessee in may
Summary: Texas forever just isn't the same.

Lovely, heartbreaking story about Tim making his own life and Lyla off living hers.

Rules

God, Tyra is so sharp here, young and bitter, and her anger is painful to read. It's a gorgeous story though, Tyra and Lyla and Tim and Jason in those moments of summer where you're under new rules but you know the freedom will never last.

The Keeping Place
Summary: Christmas is the keeping place for our memories.

Tami's voice is amazing here, perfectly in character, and the story is full of love.

Fandom: Friday Night Lights/Transamerica/Sons of Anarchy

Across the Great Divide
Summary: When circumstances beyond his control force Toby to take a leave of absence from work, he hops on his motorcycle and pays Bree and Calvin a visit and meets the new Hand that Calvin picked up.

I haven't even seen Transamerica, but this crossover is delicious, fantastic fun. I love the way the three worlds collide, and Toby is an amazing point of view character. Tim Riggins is fantastic here, too, with his animals and his ranch work and basically being awesome.

Fandom: Futurama

Be My Brussels Sprout
Summary: Concerning jealousy, proper robot maintenance, and the hazards of unprotected interspecies relationships.

I love Leela's voice here in particular, but there are some hilarious moments for all the characters.

The Miseducation of Philip J. Fry
Summary: When Planet Express is forced to close for the holidays and their X-mas party is canceled, Fry realizes that everyone in the crew has somewhere else to go to, except him. What follows is a touching, epic journey of self-discovery. And beer. And hot hologram chicks.

This is an awesome story, like a really great episode.

Fandom: Whip It

Searching for Something that Makes Hearts Move
Summary: Pash adjusts the strap of her backpack, double-checks the rainbow button on the front.

Pash is incredible here, so sharp and vulnerable and smart, and I love her with Maggie Mayhem.

Fandom: Tortall - Pierce

Travelling Towards Tomorrow
Summary: "With my mouth, I learnt to duck young." Or, Neal's first year as a squire.

Scenes from Neal's first year as a squire, with bonus Kel being awesome and moments were Alanna is hilarious and then one where she is absolutely heart breaking.

Five Worlds in Which Keladry of Mindelan Did Not Become a Lady Knight
Summary: ... as seen from the one in which she did.

These are fun, interesting, creepy, sad little scenes of Kel's potential lives which leave me even happier than before that she became a lady knight. Kel's my favorite Tortall character and she is amazing here.

Chronicles of Narnia

+ "Queen of Morning"

Even afterwards, when she had returned home and much of her first-life as a queen had faded, she would always remember this: the bitter cold before morning, the heat of tears on her cheeks, Aslan's clipped fur beneath her hands.

And then the dawn.

This is an amazing story of Susan, and her bravery, and her heartbreak.

Tamora Pierce - Tortall series

+ "Letters From Rajmuat"

Message intercepted from Aly's pack Received at Pirate's Swoop May 16, 464 H.E.

Hi Da!

Ha, I guess your trainee picked the wrong message. Sorry about that. You didn't really want to read about our kitchen cutlery, though, did you? Better luck next time.

Love and kisses, Your Aly

This is a fun, funny story told in, well, letters, obviously. Aly isn't my favorite of the Tortall women, but she is quite interesting, and this is a nice continuation of her story, as well as a believable way for her to talk to her father.

Baby-Sitters Club

+ "Opening Night"

Janine takes a deep, shuddery breath that she lets out slowly. She once presented a complicated paper about her interpretation of fluid dynamics to an audience of tenured physics professors and she did it without sweating. She answered their questions and posed a few of her own, and received two job offers, valid whenever she graduated or even if she didn't. "It's obvious your creativity will only be stifled if you continue at school. Come work for us right away, and you'll have an experimental budget twice the size of your current scholarship." Nice to dream, but she had her heart set on the B.S. (now nicely framed in her office, so it was worth it), and her future -- and the future of the economy -- lay in computer science. Theoretical research grants go dry after a few years, but the internet is forever.

Oh, Janine. I love that last line there, and I love Janine here, so comfortable in her world, so uncomfortable in Claudia's.

First, sign-ups are open for the [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon here.

I would really like to post the two stories I've written and not posted, but I can't.

So instead, I rec stories.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

+ "Dog Days"

[livejournal.com profile] bytheriver05 wrote this for me in the [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolbtvs ficathon, and it is perfect. At first I wanted to say that it was as if it was written for me; obviously, it was written for me.

However, there's a line in there which actually made me touch my newest tattoo, because it was so spot on and absolutely perfect.

This is Faith, during season three, waiting: for the end of the world, for a fight, for Buffy -- just waiting, and it is beautiful.

Peanuts

+ "Happiness Is"

It's a lovely high school story about Lucy and Schroeder and the sweetness between them, even when they fail at things, at parts of life.

Protector of the Small

+ "Love's Labours Lost"

It's a ficlet about Cleon, doing what he must to save his family. His thoughts about Kel are what sold it for me, just all the way.

(I love Keladry. I need to go reread her quartet. Again.)

Now I am off to see the fireworks.

I started this recs list yesterday, and it's slow enough at work today that I'm going to keep reading as much as I can. (We probably should have been closed today--I certainly wish we had been closed today, I'm exhausted.)

First, the story written for me.

A Knight's Tale

"5 Firsts", a gorgeous, heartbreaking, wonderful story about Kate the blacksmith and her relationship with her dead husband and her relationship with Christiana. The scenes between the women are absolutely breathtaking and wonderful, I can't believe how much so. The whole story is terrific, the tone wonderful, the bits of dialogue perfect for the source material. I am filled with so much glee because of this story, and reading it has made me happy.

Fandoms include: 10 Things I Hate About You, Bend It Like Beckham, 1602, 28 Days Later, The Addams Family (movie), The Baby-Sitters Club, California Diaries, The Village, Ugly Betty, Tamora Pierce - Tortall series, Stick It, Stephen King - It, Stephen King - Cell, The Simpsons, and Silent Hill.

Woo, nearly time to go home and read some more.

I've started with the story written from me, and that fandom, and then moved from the top of the list down. I think I am perhaps making this more work than I need to do, from reading other comments left on the stories; I'm writing far too much on each comment and I'm not reccing them until I've left feedback, but I'm having a great time, it's just very slow going and now I must take a break for awhile and do other things like grocery shop and prepare for work tomorrow. Damn it.

Fandoms recced: Tamora Pierce - Tortall universe (book), 10 Things I Hate About You (movie), 28 Days Later (movie), Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series (book), The Breakfast Club (movie), and Classical Mythology.

Tamora Pierce - Tortall universe

Old Bones and Memories is a story about Raoul of Goldenlake and his memories. It is the story written for me, so of course I knew I'd like it, but this is amazing in ways I can't actually believe. It is perfect, and captures all the things I like best about the books and about Raoul himself: the superstition, the magic, the attention to details, the loyalty to his friends, the dice games, and the character voice. It's really, truly perfect, exactly what I wanted in a Raoul story, and I can't believe it was written for me.

Ohmygod, I can't believe this, my Yuletide santa wrote me "Old Bones and Memories" a Raoul of Goldenlake from Tamora Pierce's Tortall universe. I did not think anyone would write this for me, even though I requested it, and seriously I am so touched I want to cry. These are my favorite books from my childhood and Raoul was one of my first literary crushes and oh. So touched. Thank you, Yuletide santa, thank you so much. I've not even had the chance to read more than the first paragraph yet, but I already love it and am just awed by you. Thank you.

More coherent feedback after. Right now I bask in happiness and amazement.
