Glee

bana05 has been writing an amazing series of Mercedes/Sam stories that are just absolutely delightful. I already loved them as a couple, but this series is how I wish canon would go. (My heart.) And her Mercedes/Sam isn't the only good part. I love the ensemble pieces and Mike and Sam's friendship and the way the girls are friends, OH GOD, later, Mercedes and Santana, I will mark that one special. This series has really been the highlight of my summer; I don't comment enough, but every time I see a new one, I use it as a reward and a treat for me getting through some really rough times. AMAZING STUFF RIGHT HERE.

It has all the things I want most in Glee fics: amazing friendships between the Glee girls, Mercedes getting love, Lauren/Puck and their awesome badassery, the glee club learning how to be an actual team, families being important, Mike getting solid friendships -- I love this so, so much.

This is amazing, beautiful. Cho is such a fleshed out character here, and the cover way she fights is perfect. I love this story.

Hot, sweet, and hilarious all at the same time. Yay for the beginnings of threesomes.

I was traveling when I got the news about this and it was really delightful to be surprised during the rare time I was getting to check my email.

"Broken," the Drusilla/Buffy piece I wrote for snowpuppies during Round 25 of femslash_minis won "Best Overall Dark" and "Best Slash" in round three of the absence_oflight awards. I was actually kind of nervous writing "Broken" because I wasn't sure I could pull off a convincing Buffy/Drusilla, but I love the story and I'm glad other people did too. Also, Absence of Light awarded some incredible fics and I can't wait to read the ones I haven't.

Harry Potter

20 Random Facts About Sirius Black, as Annotated and Explained by the Man Himself starts out as a sweet, hilarious, sometimes touching bit of back and forth between James and Sirius, who frequently addresses Harry with his annotations, but just as I was giggling and grinning, it took a sharp turn and left me heartbroken and wanting to cry. Excellent, high praise, that.

Star Trek

The Loudest Noise (affannato, affettuoso, agitato) is an incredibly well done story about language and communication, but it is so much deeper than that, so much more powerful, and Nyoto and Gaila are both amazing in it. Gaila in particular made my heart clench.

Free, Freefalling (The Home is Wherever I'm With You Remix) is a beautiful, painful story in which Chekov makes an official report, but is so very young and so very human and feeling so very guilty as he does so.

Four Times Kirk and McCoy Ended Up Together on Valentine's Day (The Hallmark Moments Remix) is funny and sweet and touching and charming, just a feel good fic about four years and two friends and broken hearts and lots and lots of love.

The Moment of Our Greatness Flickers (The Love is a Losing Hand Remix) is McCoy and Jocelyn falling in love and falling apart and is harsh and tense and painful because it is so exquisitely well done.

Pipe Dreams (The Marzipan in Your Pie Plate Megamix) is horrific and wonderful and shocking and just amazingly twisty. Why are Starfleet captains so fragile? And what happens after?

Never Put My Hope (the Second Generation Masters of Our Destiny Remix) definitely needs to be read after the original story, but the two go together so well it all feels real, like a story I grew up reading, like our history and our religion shaken down to its bones.

Being Human

Flowers in Your Footsteps (The Renewal Remix) is a lovely, layered story about Annie wanting new clothes, but also much deeper than that, about how we live without change and how we find our own ways to take up space and be real.

apocalyptothon 2009 fics are being posted this weekend and though I've been away from blogging for awhile now, I'm going to do some recs. I love apocalypse fics. Here's the Masterlist of Fic.

Summary: Something came back with the children when school broke for the summer, something evil.

It is delicious and shivery and frightening. I had goose bumps and chills after reading it.

beckyh2112 wrote "After the Fall", Harry Potter.
Summary: Hermione Granger is a Gryffindor, and she isn't going to stop being brave or taking care of people just because everything has come crashing down.

This is another delightfully creepy story with a Hermione I really believed.

katemonkey wrote "The Rational World", Supernatural.
Summary: The rational world is the hardest of all.

Delicious, twisty Castiel and Ruby story which actually had me not disliking Castiel. The language is perfect.

afrocurl wrote "Whimper", Veronica Mars.
Summary: Wallace is the only one! Or how to potentially survive the Apocalypse.

This is sharp and slow at the same time, a slow build throughout the story which made my toes curl and my spine bow. I love Wallace here, and the burn down to the end of the world with a whimper.

entangled_now wrote "We Go In Waves", Pushing Daises.
Summary: In which Ned may have caused the apocalypse.

Olive's voice is done so well here, and the plagues creepy and terrifying. The end has just enough hope in the middle of the apocalypse that I was left smiling.

Summary: The morning after the world ends changes every morning after that.

It ends very abruptly, which both fits into the end of the world, but is also kind of frustrating because the whole of the story seems to be building to a fight that just doesn't happen. It's a wonderful story on the way, though, with some fantastic characterization.

Angela is fantastic, kick ass and smart and still so full of love. I love the energy of the apocalypse and the way she keeps fighting no matter what happens.

Summary: Dr. Temperance Brennan had always thought she would be the last person to lose her mind completely...

The explanation for the Angel and Booth thing is kind of crazy, but pretty fitting for Angel, at least. I love the characterization, fighting vampires at the end of the world, and the team working together.

Summary: The first time Rogue kisses her, it’s the end of the world.

It's Kitty/Rogue and zombies and fighting at the end and it gave me chills and made me want to cry and made me want to go fight things. Kitty's amazing here, both what she does and who she is, and the whole world crashing down around them they still fight. I love it.

Sirius's voice is sharp and in character. The end of the world is amazing, twisted and wonderful, and the way the characters interact, the sacrifices they make, so perfectly spot on.

Request: The apocalypse has nothing to do with angels, demons, or Winchesters. They just get to enjoy it.

Fun and funny and Dean being awesome and Bobby being bad ass and Sam fretting and aliens. I'm not really sure what more you could ask for from a story like this. It was fantastic.

October Road has EVERYTHING. Including Meat Loaf karaoke. How the hell didn't I know about this before? I mean, besides the part where I didn't listen to sister K when she told me about it. I've been watching it with J and we're already almost done, because we can't stop watching it. Well, he's seen it before, but I can't stop watching it.

"Goodbyes (Strange, What Is Still Here Remix)"

Summary: Harry doesn't even know how to start.

This is kind of heartbreaking, Harry trying to tell Teddy about his parents. It's painful and lovely all at once.

"A Second Breath (The Jacob's Ladder Remix)"

Summary: Her skin is smooth once more, pale, unmarked, but bones don’t forget, and neither does Luna.

This is heartwrenching, and beautiful, and I mourned the end because I didn't want to stop reading this lovely, lovely world. Luna's voice here is perfection, and the characters so very true to themselves.

"Goldfish Bowl (Glass Houses Remix)"

Summary: It's hard being normal in the goldfish bowl.

Bobby's characterization is amazing here, and there are perfect little bits of his obsession with Rogue's skin which reminds me so much of the eroticism of Fingersmith it took away my breath.

"Scary Monsters" by penknife: This is a fantastic story about Remus becoming a werewolf and the things he learns and must learn to live with because of it. The whys and hows are very interesting and the writing is absolutely lovely.

Summary: It's not easy having monsters in the family. Remus Lupin (and Fenrir Greyback), gen.

"Ice Capades: Three Scenes From the Life of a Slayer" by karabair: I'm not a fan of Buffy the character, not in the show, not in fic. However, these scenes from Buffy's life, and the way she interacts with her father, are touching and clear and terrific. They made me like her, made me feel for Buffy, and made me glad I could.

Summary: Some gen Buffy/family interaction.

"Kristy and the Horrible Break Up" by thelastgoodname: The Kristy voice in this story is fantastic, as are the details, the character interaction, and the romance. It's fun and sweet and lovely.

Summary: Sam and Stacey break up, and Kristy is distraught. Why? And what will she do to get them back together?

"Weighs Nothing: Five Lies That Connor's Father Told Him" by kita0610 is a series of linked drabbles which will break your heart.

And now for Remix/Redux IV: I Know What You Did Last Remix stories, all anonymous!

The most important, of course, is the remix written for me.

"The Man I Could Be (The Paved With Good Intentions remix)" is a remix of my Man I Could Be, but this new story is the one I wish I had written. It's beautiful, and painful, and detailed, and absolutely amazing. I'm still in awe of it, and don't know what to say beyond I love it. It's Harry Potter fandom, about Ron and the way he views his family, and I adore it.

"Light In the Darkness (Samsara mix)" is a beautiful Firefly story about Inara and River, and how Inara sees and hears the things no one else is willing to understand.

"Abominable (The Extended [Baby-Sitters] Club remix) is an Angel story crossed over with The Baby-Sitters Club about a young genius woman, Janine, who is tempted by Wolfram & Hart's east coast office, and finds a friend in Fred. It's that, but it's so much more, loneliness and fear and all sorts of things.
