Two things.

One: I'm tempted to request this for Yuletide. Heists for everyone!

Two: I watched the first trailer for the new Fast and the Furious movie the day it dropped and promptly texted a bunch of people to shout. Under the cut is a recap of my reaction because it was A LOT. I cannot wait for this goddamn movie. I have loved this franchise since I saw Fast and the Furious in the theater back in 2001, and I cannot believe how far we've come.

I never really watched the Power Rangers when I was younger (though I once had a smoking hot dream about one of the Red Rangers that I still remember to this day because it was so great), but I caught the teaser trailer for the new movie awhile back, and I hope I get the chance to see it in the theater, because it gave me chills.

Especially love the use of the Halsey cover of "Walk the Line." (The full trailer is not nearly as intriguing, but I still think it will be a rollicking good time.)

Meanwhile, the Fate of the Furious trailers just keep getting even more ridiculous (I know! How is that even possible?! But it is!), and I am so fucking there. Going to be damn pissed off if Ramsey doesn't get to out hack someone, though. They'd better not lose her badassery. (I'm still mourning the fact Mia won't be around anymore. I love her so.)

I was already completely sold on the Wonder Woman movie, but the origins trailer completely overwhelmed me. Wonder Woman is not even one of my favorite characters (I don't much like DC, though the Supergirl tv show is working hard to change my mind), but I am so verklempt that we're getting this movie in this world of ours.

Also, "she must never know the truth about what she is" -- YOU GUYS, I DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW THE TRUTH! I'm so used to having a solid understanding of the comics history behind the movies I watch that it is such a weird (and great) feeling to not know a damn thing other than the truth lasso.

(Who's writing the Fast and the Furious/Wonder Woman crossover? Because surely someone is writing it!)

J is doing a rewatch of Longmire, and I am doing (another) rewatch of Leverage (no, seriously, this is probably my fifth in six months? Counting that initial time marathoning it over a matter of days), and as we were talking about our favorite characters on Longmire, an interesting thought struck me. My favorite character is Henry. (J's is Hector, which is incredibly fitting, unsurprising, and not actually pertinent.) In the episode we watched, Walt loses his temper and destroys his office in his rage. That scene is a great example of why Walt can't be my favorite, which surprised J, because I am a creature of rage.(1) But that is why Walt can't be my favorite, because I identify with him too much (at least in that way), and I don't much care for my rage control issues. (I don't mind my rage itself, generally, but too often, the uncontrollable aspect of it is tied tightly to the bipolar(2). I have fought long and hard to gain control and find an even emotional ground -- and most of that is medicine supported -- but I know it is there.)

This got me thinking. I tend to love certain characters and identify hard with certain characters, and those characters do not generally overlap, because when I identify with characters, it is mostly because of traits I don't particularly like in myself.

Examples: Henry vs Walt; She-Hulk is my favorite Hulk, but I deeply identify with MCU Bruce Banner and his rage(3); Hardison is my favorite, but I identify more with Eliot (his control is more of the kind of control I've managed, though he is probably the most controlled of the characters with which I identify); Sir Keladry is my favorite of the Tortall characters (from Tamora Pierce's series), but I identify more with Sir Alanna (who is known for her anger issues).

This can sometimes fall apart when it comes to angry women: Faith from BTVS is both my favorite and the one I identify with the most; so is Letty, from the Fast and the Furious series; of the women in the United States of Asgard, I love Glory the Fenris Wolf and her neverending hunger and Sygny the Valkyrie proving herself in blood and fire and rage, and I identify with them immensely. But generally, I like the ones who have learned control, and identify with the ones who have not, who let their anger ride so near the surface.

I need to think about this some more, but it might give me structure for that series of essays I've been wanting to write about bipolar.

(1) Recently I mentioned on my grad school friends chat thread that I am feeling very manic lately, and have a berserker heart. I have been reading too much Norse-inspired fiction, I suppose; I'm in the middle of yet another reread of Tessa Gratton's United States of Asgard series, and the more times I read the series, the more I love the berserker main character of the first book, Soren. He is the best.

(2) Note: I am NOT saying that mental illness makes people dangerous. My mental illness sometimes manifests in ways that make me dangerous, because my rage and lack of control sometimes makes me dangerous, with or without the mental illness.

(3) Though werewolf is my favorite metaphor for bipolar, the Hulk thing works pretty well for it, too. Despite how long we've been together, J recently learned that She-Hulk is my favorite (he only recently learned She-Hulk exists at all, because J is not a comic book fan, and when he does watch adaptations, he always does DC), and I explained it is because if you take the Hulk thing as a metaphor for bipolar, LOOK AT HER. She is what I want to be.

Y'all. Y'ALL. When I saw the title for the new movie, I laughed until I cried at the ridiculous levels of drama in it, and now the trailer is out, and I am completely besotted with this ridiculous franchise even more than I already was. It is going to be even more over-the-top and emotionally dramatic than the last couple of movies, and I can't wait. I CAN'T WAIT.

I can't even begin to tell you how much joy this franchise has brought me over the years. I can't wait to see the explanation for what's going on, and all the gorgeous cars and explosions, and the hot people hitting each other. I LOVE THIS DAMN FRANCHISE.
escritoireazul: (fast furious letty and dom)
Warning: There are a number of spinny camera action scenes, most of which are fine, but there are some toward the end where the spinny camera went on and on and my vertigo started up. Just a little, but enough I wasn't pleased.

OMG YOU GUYS YOU GUYS THIS MOVIE MY HEART YOU GUYS.

With the exception of 2 Fast 2 Furious, I have loved every minute of this franchise. No matter what sort of things it does that piss me off or break my heart, I have loved the ride. This is no exception. It's fun and ridiculous and wonderful, and, in the end, absolutely heart breaking, because this chosen family transcends the screen. There's a whole piece that is a good-bye to Paul Walker, and it broke my fucking heart. I don't even care whether it fits within the movie or not, it is beautiful and touching and I cried in the damn theater.

One nitpicky thing (so far):

Furious 7 spoilers )

The series has basically become an overblown video game, and it is wonderful and amazing and fantastic. Come talk to me, people. Tell me your thoughts. (Spoilers totally welcome in the comments.

Saw this, couldn't resist plugging in some of my favorite characters, loved the winner, so I'm posting. This doesn't make me want to write a Hunger Games fusion, but it does make me want to write something with mixed characters and lots of death.

December Talking Meme Master List

(There are still some days left open in the meme, if you want to suggest a(nother) topic.)

Day 8 suggested by [personal profile] devon: Can you tell us about Fast & Furious versus Pitch Black/Riddick and how you prefer your Vin Diesel?

I prefer my Vin Diesel any way I can get him. A talking tree who basically only repeated one line was my favorite character in Guardians of the Galaxy because of the way he dealt with the intonation. I live a Vin Diesel appreciate life all day every day.

The Fast and the Furious was the first movie I saw Vin Diesel in, and I fell in love. I have such a soft spot for Dominic Toretto, and I imagine he will always be my favorite Vin Diesel character. Toretto hits so many of my buttons: he's a mechanic who is incredibly loyal to and protective of his family, to the point of making terrible mistakes and becoming violent when a family member is hurt or killed, who brings people together (he's their gravity, as Mia says) and struggles to keep their world steady. Also, he's hot as everloving hell with a voice that just doesn't quit. I love big men with growly voices (see also, J), and yes, yes, yes.

Shortly after I watched Fast and the Furious and fell in love with Dominic Toretto and Vin Diesel, my friend Keya found out I had never seen Pitch Black and suggested I remedy this IMMEDIATELY. She was not wrong. I had heard nothing about Pitch Black at that point, which was a real shame, because Pitch Black is amazing.

While I like the rest of the series well enough (though I have some serious issues with Riddick that were so frustrating I had to vent to [personal profile] raz0rgirl over Skype because just typing up my frustrations were not enough. [Basically: OMGWTF I FUCKING TRUST YOUR MOVIES NOT TO BE SUPER SHITTY TOWARDS WOMEN. WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK HAPPENED WITH RIDDICK? WHY? SO MANY CHOICES WERE THE SHITTIEST CHOICES EVER. GODDAMN IT.]), Pitch Black is my favorite. (And Riddick could have been up there, because it really felt like a return to the Pitch Black style, except see previous rant.)

Pitch Black is a horror movie in space, and I love it. I love all the characters, I love their weaknesses, I love their fears and fighting. I love the cinematography. I love the monsters. I love the light, and I love the darkness. I used to have movie nights with my sisters and one of my brothers in law where we'd watch Pitch Black far more nights than not, and quote our favorite bits to each other until they became jokes (the "looks clear" bit remains an in-joke with Sister K) (we would also often get Chinese food and watch Lost Boys, because yes) (Sister K and I actually also make references to Tokyo Drift as a part of our in-jokes, particularly "this ain't no ten second race") (these asides are just driving home the point my real number one fandom is Vin Diesel, aren't they?). I can watch Pitch Black again and again and again and never get tired of it.

Riddick is not my favorite part of Pitch Black, though. I mean, he's awesome, and I love his controlled violence (and the many times he's bound in chains, yes, more of that please), but for me, Pitch Black is all about Jack and her disguise as a boy [and Jack as a trans guy is A+ storytelling in fanfic], Shazza's attitude (OMG SHAZZA), and Carolyn Fry's redemption. The guys are just dressing to that storyline, really, including Riddick. (And Radha Mitchell is amazing and strong and lovely.)

(Aside, I swear that Cole Hauser plays his character in The Cave as inspired by Vin Diesel playing Riddick, especially as more animalistic traits start to appear. Also, I just learned that Cole Hauser is filming a new Lizzie Borden tv miniseries, which, yay! I love Lizzie Borden stories.)

I will watch Vin Diesel in anything. (No, seriously, I own The Pacifier. /headdesk) Like I said in an earlier post, I don't tend to keep up to date on actor's lives, but the bits of things I've learned about him over the years are adorable: his love for D&D, the way he interacts with his fans via Facebook, the way he's super open about his love for his friends and family, and the way he seems so enthusiastic in creating these worlds I love.

So, basically, my preferred Vin Diesel is any Vin Diesel, but Dominic Toretto and the Fast and the Furious series are my absolute favorites. That series, and all its characters, own my heart.

December Talking Meme Master List

Today's prompt was Michelle Rodriguez, from [livejournal.com profile] catalinay.

Oh, man, Michelle Rodriguez. I love Michelle Rodriguez so, so much. Mostly I love her because she keeps playing characters I love, characters who can be tough and vulnerable and physically and mentally strong and so very protective of those she loves. My two favorite characters are Letty Ortiz from the Fast and the Furious series and Eden from Blue Crush. I stopped watching Lost spoilers for season two ). She is the only reason I regret that I decided not to watch Avatar because of its white savior crap. I don't really keep up with actors' lives (though I remember when the DUIs happened during Lost filming and I did see that she came out as bisexual), so I'm going to talk about characters.

Michelle Rodriguez playing Letty Ortiz is basically my one true character. She's tough and smart and a kick ass mechanic and a damn good driver. She's loyal (probably to a fault), and protective and snarky. She fits so well into other fandoms. I particularly love Letty the Vampire Slayer, which I've written a few different ways. Letty the werewolf is another favorite. I love the idea of this tough woman learning to control the additional physical strength and power that would come from being a vampire slayer and/or werewolf. (I really love writing her as a vampire slayer who is also a werewolf, because obviously if one thing is good when it comes to Letty, more is better.) Letty was the first Michelle Rodriguez character I saw, and I imprinted on her hard, clearly.

That being said, I identify hard with Eden from Blue Crush. She's struggling to keep her chosen family together, watching her girl (maybe her best friend, maybe her girlfriend, maybe both) "waste" this incredible opportunity to make a name for herself (again) and go big time in their beloved sport (there's a lot of meta potential when it comes to Eden and Anne Marie's relationship), she's struggling (they're all struggling) to pay bills and keep food on the table and manage to have this life, she's young and, with her two bffs, raising this teenage girl -- there's just a ton of greatness to her. She's trying so hard, and you can see her just willing Anne Marie to do the right thing (or at least what Eden thinks is the right thing). Eden forever.

I just love her face SO MUCH, you guys. So much.

The tag set is available for the fandoms nominated for Yuletide 2013 (located here), and I am starting to get really excited. For one thing, Fast and the Furious was allowed back in. I love writing treats in that fandom in particular. JOY!

I was going to start a list of my initial interests for requesting, offering, and treating, but my dog has just come to fetch me and tell me it's time for bed, so I'm going to do that instead. Soon though. Soon.

Yuletide 2013 nominations are open.

I thought I would struggle with mine more than I did, but when I sat down, I realized I really want to read and/or write in three of this fandoms. The other is an old stand-by (and I'm not sure it will qualify as a small fandom this year anyway).

My nominations:

Dance Academy (Abigail Armstrong, Ollie Lloyd, Sammy Lieberman, Kat Karamakov)
Fast and the Furious Series (Letty Ortiz, Mia Toretto, Dominic Toretto, Han Lue)
Protector of the Small - Tamora Pierce (Keladry of Mindelan, Raoul of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak, Domitan of Masbolle, Shinkokami of Conte)
Provost's Dog - Tamora Pierce (Sabine of Macayhill, Aniki Forfrysning, Kora Ingensra, Nomalla of Halleburn)

There is no overarching theme (except I always want stories about women), but with the last two, I really, really want girl slash between women with swords. Unf. None of mine have been reviewed yet.

What have (or will) you nominate?

Finally checking my email, and I want to thank whoever nominated Wolf Woman Wild for the SunnyD Awards. Wolf Woman Wild has been nominated for Best Crossover (Movie) (it is a crossover with The Fast and the Furious) and Best Crossover (Movie) Pairing for Faith/Letty/Oz.

Voting runs November 19 through December 19, if you'd like to vote for Wolf Woman Wild or any of the other awesome stories nominated.

tiny spoiler for Glee )

I don't have the brain to meta tonight like intended. (Or to fic. Work was long and hard and I really need to be doing it now, even, but I think I am going to bed and getting up in the wee hours instead.)

Another Fast & Furious 5 poster which apparently now has "Rio Heist" as the tag? Or maybe just this poster, which is international? Doesn't matter, because fucking hell, biceps. And BICEPS. And then there's Paul Walker, which, whatever, let's cut him out. BUT THE BICEPS. And the guns. And the car. And the shaved heads. And the tattoos. And did I mentioned the BICEPS? FUCK.

Stop! Self-awareness time!

I was reading this fantastic post in which [personal profile] toft talks about Mercedes Lackey's books and I realized why I have so little patience for -- well, I'll put it in [personal profile] toft's words:

7) I love that all of the books that I've read so far punch my talented-outcast-child-is-rescued-from-family-and-excels-at-school narrative kink right in the kidneys and throw it down the stairs. In a good way.

Now I read this post after watching the first three Harry Potter movies with Mom (one last night, two today) and even though I've seen them before and read the books and wrote fanfic, damn it, it struck me really hard how much of an idiot Harry is a lot of the time and how things just fall in his lap. Sometimes literally.

And don't get me wrong, I love the first four Harry Potter books a lot. (The movies not as much and the last three not nearly as much, but the first four, particularly three and four, SO MUCH LOVE.) And I also love the Mercedes Lackey books I've read, which isn't very many, I'll admit, but I read the Arrows trilogy and then BY THE SWORD which has KEROWYN I'LL KICK YOUR GODDAMN ASS AND YOU'LL LIKE IT who is my hero, so obviously I'm a fan of that one, too.

But frequently these talented-outcast-child-rescued-from-family-and-excels-at-[fill in the blank] narratives really bug me. While reading [personal profile] toft's post I finally figured out why, even though it is really obvious if you know me at all: Basically every awesome thing I have ever done is because I am trying to live up to the awesomeness of my family. No, really, they've set the bar high and it just keeps getting pushed higher. Even though I don't directly follow in anyone's footsteps, what I do is done so I can be as awesome as my family. So of course I don't grok that narrative the way some others might.

Not very awesome that it took me that long to figure it out, but whatever.

(By the way, as we're watching Harry Potter, Mom turns to me and says she doesn't understand why people threw such a fit over Harry Potter being satanic or whatever, nothing they did magically seemed all that bad and I said I thought it was just the idea of ~magic in the first place that was so horrible. She scoffed and said that was ridiculous, kids should grow up with magical stories and reading stories about magic doesn't make them bad Christians. Oh, Mom, you are the best conservative, Christian mother ever! [Though obviously conservative doesn't apply to Christian in that sentence.] Oh, speaking of conservatives, I am not adjusting well to being back in a small town in a red state. Today some guy came around talking about politicians because we're running up on the November election and ads and calls and door to door is going wild. Anyway, dude told me politician is a Democrat and liberal in [these ways], but still conservative, too, in [these ways] and is pro life. I don't think he expected me to say, well, those liberal things are really good, but the pro life thing is generally a deal breaker for me. Too liberal for the liberals here, what?)

~*~

Sons of Anarchy comes back this week! I think I will liveblog it, because OMG FINALLY. J and I were talking the other night and he said the adverts make it look like it's going to be very soap opera-y and the season finale was very much a soap opera. I laughed and said even if it is, if I kept watching after [that thing with Gemma last season], I'll give them a season of being a soap opera before I quit them.

The Vampire Diaries comes back, too, but I rarely talk about that here. Maybe that will change this season. Because [THINGS! THINGS WHICH ARE SPOILERS!]

~*~

I am tired, but I am waiting on a thing and I pulled up my [livejournal.com profile] werewolfbigbang, which I keep thinking I won't finish, but the first draft isn't due until later this month, so maybe I will finish. I'm writing a sequel to "wolf woman wild," but I keep wanting to write some ridiculous crossover (er, even more ridiculous than "wolf woman wild" which has BtVS, Angel, Fast and the Furious series, and Ginger Snaps) about a wolf pack that contains characters from BtVS, Fast and the Furious series, Sons of Anarchy, Harry Potter, etc. I do not need to set aside the sequel and write 10k of a ridiculous crossover. I don't.

(Dude, Sons of Anarchy basically is a werewolf pack without being werewolves. And how awesome would it be to have Oz and Faith, Letty and Dom and Mia, Jax and Opie and Donna and Tara, Remus and Sirius, Clay and Gemma all in a wolf pack together? Hell, let's really make it ridiculous and throw in Sam and Dean and John and Mary Winchester and, GOD, Ellen and Jo Harvelle, because obviously after Race Wars, Jesse runs off and becomes Ash. Hell, Chad Lindberg himself brings together Fast and the Furious, Supernatural, and Sons of Anarchy. If I really wanted to go wild, I know I could work in Velma and Daphne.

Good grief, I'm actually considering this.)

~*~

THING is done, so I can go to bed! Except now I'm thinking about the damn ridiculous crossover.

Hahaha, I have POWER. I am this months Fast and the Furious reccer on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and I can't wait to bring the non-boy slash recs. Does anyone want to do some fic cheerleading for me? I'm writing a Sons of Anarchy/Fast and the Furious series crossover from Mia Toretto's point of view. If you leave me your email in a comment, I will send you the 500 or so words I have and you can cheerlead for me. Or tell me it's horrible and I should start over. Whichever works.

I need to update my icons.

Also, I'm now a tag wrangler for AO3. It looks like it will be complicated, but fun.

So far, this is what I've signed up to do.

Characters: Mia Toretto and Letty Ortiz (Fast and the Furious series)
What: Fic recs and meta, maybe picspam

I may even make icons if I feel particularly creative.

No, I'm not crossing them over. (Yet. I have to admit, now I'm thinking about it and I'm tempted. Could be a continuation of "Wolf Woman Wild" I suppose.) But I'm watching Being Human via On Demand and so in between episodes, I get to see On Demand's obsession with Fast and the Furious franchise today. I love catching snippets of Vin Diesel's voice.
