I only managed five stories across three fandoms for Yuletide this year, half as many as last year, but I'm mostly very pleased with what I did write. We'll see how next Yuletide goes, as always. Perhaps I will scale my goal back to 5 stories a year for the next few years.

Summary: The summer before she leaves for Berkeley, DJ says good-bye.

I was so excited to get this assignment, and then I struggled, and struggled, and struggled some more. Part of it was that I always struggle to write fiction without monsters, and I just finished another such project before I started this, and part of it was the election fallout. I wrote probably 20k total on this in fits and starts, with deleted scenes and three different openings (one of which became a treat) and multiple drafts and multiple betas and lots and lots of rewriting. I'm fairly pleased with how it came out.

Summary: DJ loves Steve, still, and she'll always be grateful for prom, but that doesn't mean they're getting back together.

This is, of course, the opening that I cut from the main gift but which stood enough on its own to be read as a treat. It is more bittersweet than I normally write for Yuletide, but I really love DJ in it.

Summary: There’s silver bullets in Demi’s belt, a silver core to the metal band around her throat. Michelle wonders if she knows, if she can smell the similarities between them.

When I finally had the second draft of my assignment done and off to the beta, I went looking through the prompts again, wanting to write treats. I had avoided the other Confident prompts, because I try not to write in fandoms I request, but I decided to skim through them to see the different things people wanted (I love seeing the different ways people are inspired by the same source material), and when I saw the werewolf prompt, I immediately opened a file. The first words were: WEREWOLF CONFIDENT PROMPT OMG YES THIS IS MINE.

So, yeah. That happened. Of everything I wrote this year, this story is the one that has a neon sign with my name on it, and I would not be surprised at all if everyone who knows me and read it immediately guessed it was mine.

Once again, I got to write Michelle Rodriguez as a werewolf, which is one of my favorite things.

As soon as I saw

havocthecat's Lost Boys request, I knew I wanted to try to write a gift fic for her, and then I bugged her to post her letter, which means I would not at all be surprised if she knew this was me. I love how she loves the Lost Boys, and Star in particular, and I have become so deeply sold on Star/Michael/David. This was, as always, a joy to write; Lost Boys was my second online fandom, and I've been writing in it for nearly 20 years now. I love it so.

Summary: Star saw a knight in the cards, but there was no boy in shining armor on a white horse. There wasn't even a boy in a car, offering her safety and family and home. There wasn't a boy at all, though boys come to Santa Carla by the dozens, and die just as fast.

There was, though, a girl.

This was the first story I started for Yuletide 2016, and the last I finished. I saw the prompt before I even read my assignment and immediately fell in love with it, particularly the way skazka loves Santa Carla and the feel of the movie, and his lesbian biker gang prompt was the greatest thing ever. I love this story, and this world, and if I write more lesbian Lost Boys gender swap, do not be surprised.

Y'all. Y'ALL. When I saw the title for the new movie, I laughed until I cried at the ridiculous levels of drama in it, and now the trailer is out, and I am completely besotted with this ridiculous franchise even more than I already was. It is going to be even more over-the-top and emotionally dramatic than the last couple of movies, and I can't wait. I CAN'T WAIT.

I can't even begin to tell you how much joy this franchise has brought me over the years. I can't wait to see the explanation for what's going on, and all the gorgeous cars and explosions, and the hot people hitting each other. I LOVE THIS DAMN FRANCHISE.

Mostly, I am trying to decide how to nominate the characters. Despite MULTIPLE documents and news reports being included, I have not managed to make out either Demi or Michelle's character name, nor have I found it in any of the articles I've read about the video. It feels weird to nominate by their public names verses character names, but if that is what I have to do, it is what I will do.

Suggestions?

It is that time of year again! I've been thinking about potential Yuletide requests for a few weeks now, and was worried I wouldn't be able to come up with anything because I have been so hardcore into Leverage and The Librarians, neither of which are eligible (based on my super quick check of numbers at ff.net and AO3). (I've only seen season one of The Librarians, but there is a set of alternate universes toward the end of the season that has me wanting ALL THE FIC.)

But then I read through my Yuletide tag for awhile to inspire myself, and it worked!

Fandoms I am considering for Yuletide 2016:

+ Demi Lovato "Confident" music video

OH MY GOD THIS CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE HOTTEST THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN. It is Michelle Rodriguez and Demi Lovato as ass-kicking badasses who have been used by the system in some way, first fight each other and then bond, and take off on motorcycles at the end. Are they somehow enhanced by science experiments? Are they werewolves? Are they just that badass? What happens after, what wrongs do they go right next? I WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING.

Some of you expressed interest when I found it last year, so consider this your reminder: I really want to make this happen, y'all. Let's write hot music video fic this year!

+ Long Live the Queen, Turn of the Story, and/or Life is Strange

The three fandoms I requested last year, and I got an amazing Life is Strange story from it that I've reread numerous times and love. I might request on or more of these again, though; reading over last year's letter (which is linked above) reignited my excitement over all three.

+ Girl Meets World

I love Maya and Riley SO MUCH, and from a previous Yuletide brainstorming session, was reminded that I really want some sort of ghost story for them, Scooby Doo style, maybe. There are a ton of potential stories I would love to read.

However, I took a sharp break from it partway through season two (I think it was season two) because of some of the character choices they made for Farkle, and I haven't yet gone back. I should give it another try.

+ A couple years ago, I said I wished I'd discovered The Next Step before nominations closed, and I loved season one, then proceeded to never actually nominate it last year or watch any of the other seasons that may exist. I should look into that. I love ridiculous dance shows!

+ Also a couple years ago, I said I wanted Yuletide fic for Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, and yet I have never nominated it. This year may be the year.

What do you guys want to request and write for Yuletide?

WHY DIDN'T I LEARN ABOUT THIS BEFORE YULETIDE NOMS ENDED?! I need all of the stories about this video immediately.

Michelle Rodriguez is one of the two main characters, kicks all sorts of ass, and looks amazing. If this was a feature film, I think it would be my new favorite role of hers, because even in this short little video, she is a joy and a delight. I need all the stories. All of them. Immediately.

4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

I guess? I have favorite characters in media, and I have characters I write about frequently because I have stories to tell about them. Sometimes, those characters are the same, but not always. I tend to write about characters that hook my attention somehow, and often those characters have similar qualities, so I guess that part is like the "speaking" to me part of the question. (Examples: Tough, angry girls and women. characters who listen more than they speak. Characters with monsters inside. Anyone played by Michelle Rodriguez.)

I write about these characters, because these are the characters that interest me, whose stories I want to expand, examine, change, because these qualities intrigue me and inspire me and ring truth inside me. They make me want to tell stories, and so I do.

Wow, that went much faster. No explanations, for the most part, just names, that was the way to go. Takeaway: if Michelle Rodriguez is in the movie, her character is my favorite, and WEREWOLVES ALWAYS WEREWOLVES.

December Talking Meme Master List

Oh, man, Michelle Rodriguez. I love Michelle Rodriguez so, so much. Mostly I love her because she keeps playing characters I love, characters who can be tough and vulnerable and physically and mentally strong and so very protective of those she loves. My two favorite characters are Letty Ortiz from the Fast and the Furious series and Eden from Blue Crush. I stopped watching Lost ( spoilers for season two ). She is the only reason I regret that I decided not to watch Avatar because of its white savior crap. I don't really keep up with actors' lives (though I remember when the DUIs happened during Lost filming and I did see that she came out as bisexual), so I'm going to talk about characters.

Michelle Rodriguez playing Letty Ortiz is basically my one true character. She's tough and smart and a kick ass mechanic and a damn good driver. She's loyal (probably to a fault), and protective and snarky. She fits so well into other fandoms. I particularly love Letty the Vampire Slayer, which I've written a few different ways. Letty the werewolf is another favorite. I love the idea of this tough woman learning to control the additional physical strength and power that would come from being a vampire slayer and/or werewolf. (I really love writing her as a vampire slayer who is also a werewolf, because obviously if one thing is good when it comes to Letty, more is better.) Letty was the first Michelle Rodriguez character I saw, and I imprinted on her hard, clearly.

That being said, I identify hard with Eden from Blue Crush. She's struggling to keep her chosen family together, watching her girl (maybe her best friend, maybe her girlfriend, maybe both) "waste" this incredible opportunity to make a name for herself (again) and go big time in their beloved sport (there's a lot of meta potential when it comes to Eden and Anne Marie's relationship), she's struggling (they're all struggling) to pay bills and keep food on the table and manage to have this life, she's young and, with her two bffs, raising this teenage girl -- there's just a ton of greatness to her. She's trying so hard, and you can see her just willing Anne Marie to do the right thing (or at least what Eden thinks is the right thing). Eden forever.

I just love her face SO MUCH, you guys. So much.

Friday Night Lights

Episodes keep disappearing off my dvr, so I decided to watch the ones I had and deal with catching up later, which is possibly a hugely confusing way to do it, but whatever. I teared up at the theme song, it made me so happy to have new episodes to watch.

I have the window open next to me, and I'm hearing things I don't remember hearing in my neighborhood. Awesome things. Things I love.

+ Engines revving like there is motorcycle drag racing down the street.

+ Vin Diesel's voice.

Well, okay, that last one is because they are obsessively showing the trailer for Babylon A.D. on television, but I am perfectly fine with that. I don't remember his previous movies getting this kind of television coverage. I am pleased.

In more Vin Diesel awesomeness, Here is the first trailer for the new Fast and the Furious movie. Between Vin and Michelle Rodriguez, I haven't left my happy place. YUM. And also pretty cars and explosions. Double plus good.
