Sometimes I'm around to see something and want to talk about it. Today is that day.

[community profile] questionoftheday: What is your aesthetic?

Apparently, it is red. Awhile back, I moved into a new office and started putting out various things. A couple weeks in, one of my coworkers came in with some questions and made an off-hand comment about how much I must love the color red.

Me: I ... actually don't like the color red.

But I was wearing a red shirt, and there are red decorations on one of my shelves (little carved owls from a project I did last year with a designer), and the box with my business cards is floral and bright red (pretty enough that I leave it out instead of in a drawer), and a bunch of the reference books I have are red (they were all gifts) and ...

I don't like red. I don't hate it, but I've never much liked it. It's an angry color, and I'm angry enough on my own. My favorite color is blue, particularly teals and midnight blues, and when I wear them, I am more settled and in control.

I am angry all the time, and apparently, over the past five years, have been filling my wardrobe with red to reflect that. I am angry, and I am smart, and I am sharp, and at work, I do not need to be softer or gentler or kinder or settled. I can rage and still be in control.

My mom's favorite color was red. She was gentle (and sometimes painfully meek, though she'd brought herself out of that for the most part by the time I was growing up) and kind and good. I think, though, that a part of her was also always angry. The part she used to teach me that I could do anything and be anything, that I could be big and loud and angry and smart, that I could intimidate people just by existing and that was okay. Mom struggled a lot with how to deal with a bunch of queer kids, and non-Christian kids, and liberal kids, but she loved us and pushed us and supported us.

Mom's birthday would have been this Saturday and the anniversary of her death next Friday. I'll wear red.

Aesthetic in summary: jeans, casual dresses (eshakti all the way), reds and oranges for work, blues and blacks at home, leggings and knock-off Chucks under dresses and cotton and jean skirts, wrestling t-shirts and old, torn up jeans for studio time (at home or at the pottery studio), bright red lips and usually no other make-up, wildly curly hair.

Not necessarily together.

Wiscon: I'll be attending again this year! It's been a few years, but some friends and I first met in person at Wiscon 30, and it seemed fitting for all of us to go back for Wiscon 40. Will any of you guys be there? Let me know if you want to meet up, and I'll give you my contact info.

AMAs: I've seen a bunch of lists today, and I'm super excited to start reading everyone's answers, so I'm opening up for it, too. I won't stick to a specific month, because, well, clearly that doesn't work for me, but I'll answer a handful at a time until they're done. Once I have some questions, I'll make a master list.

New job has me swamped, and I'm doing a ton of creative work during my off hours, but I am trying to find a balance. I miss you guys! How are you?

Day 2: talk about music this year

I haven't really listened to much new music this year, mostly because I haven't been listening to the radio. (In part because I generally only listen to the radio in the car, and since I haven't been commuting for work, I haven't been driving as much; in part because when I do drive, I listen to podcasts.) Instead, I will give you some of the songs off my Top 25 Most Played song list (of songs on my music player).

1. "Monster" Imagine Dragons: Hahahahahaha, oh, man, such a prime example of how WWE has influenced my musical tastes. I fell in love with this song when it was used for Wrestlemania 30 promo package for Daniel Bryan, and keep playing because it fits so nicely with a story BFF and I wrote.

Expandembedded video )

2. "One More Time" 7Lions: ... yet another WWE inspired music discovery, used in the all the tribute stuff for the Ultimate Warrior. I listen to it A LOT when I can't sleep.

Expandembedded video )

3. "Should've Known" The Heroes Lie: OKAY THIS IS RIDICULOUS I SWEAR I LISTEN TO MUSIC THAT WASN'T FEATURED BY WWE. This was used in a promo for Paul Heyman's dvd, and Paul Heyman is the Greatest Talker Ever, but I mostly love this song outside of the promo. The rhythm is infectious, and it makes me want to hit things, which is something I love in my music.

Expandembedded video )

4. "Lights Go Out" Fozzy: *headdesk*

(Fozzy's lead singer is Chris Jericho, a WWE wrestler. I give up. Another song that makes me want to hit things. I used to pound on the roof of the car while listening to it as I drove.)

Expandembedded video )

5. "Stand in the Storm" Meat Loaf: OH THANK FUCK A SONG NOT INSPIRED BY WWE. I freaking love Meat Loaf, and though I still love his older stuff more, I adore this song. Great writing inspiration, and also something I listen to when I need to be inspired to just keep pushing through life.

Expandembedded video )

I don't even watch that much wrestling anymore! COME ON, MUSIC PLAYER, WHY YOU GOTTA BE THAT WAY?

Other songs from the Top 25:
"Radioactive" cover by Pentatonix and Lindsey Stirling
"Bad Moon Rising" cover by Voices in Your Head
"Bad Moon Rising" cover by Rosa Chance Well
"Bad Moon Rising" cover by Juliana Hatfield (I really like "Bad Moon Rising" covers, obviously. Also "Carol of the Bells" covers.)
"Ride to California" Paper Tongues (Discovered this from an Iron Man fanvid.)
"Gorgeous Nightmare" Escape the Fate
"Shut Up and Drive" Rihanna
"Monster" Skillet (It was only a year or so ago that I learned this is a Christian hard rock band.)
"Come With Me Now" KONGOS (OKAY YES MORE WWE MUSIC WHAT THE HELL.)

I have not yet quite finished December 2014's topics, though it is still a work in progress, but if you want to leave topics for December 2015, I will write about them as much as possible this December, and continue them well into 2016, obviously.

You can also (or instead) leave fandom and prompts for December drabbles. I am making excellent progress on Yuletide (finished the first draft of my assignment and one treat, and the other stories are shaping up nicely), but everything is so long that sometimes I want breaks to write little one-off pieces.

I've added a bunch of people from a friending meme, so I thought I'd do a quick hello.

This is what I said in the meme comment:

Expandcomment )

That is a pretty good summary, actually. Werewolves and dinosaurs, my favorite things.

I'm now drawing a blank on how to summarize anything, so if you have any questions, hit me up! That goes for all of you, old or new. Have a question, about me or fandoms or fic or anything? Let me know. I'll answer. It might be a ridiculous over-the-top story kind of answer, but that's part of the fun.
escritoireazul: (Default)
In addition to the December topic meme going around (mine is here, still taking prompts), [personal profile] theladyscribe is running a multi-fandom friending meme. I think this is a fantastic idea, especially with the topic meme coming up, plus Yuletide making December full of posting, and I have been adding people to my reading list left and right.
escritoireazul: (Default)
I missed this last year, but I've heard from my reading list that it was great and led to a lot of excellent posts. I think it sounds like fun. My understanding is, you nominate a topic (and, if you want, a date) and I'll write about that topic (either on your proposed date or on a date I choose, if you don't nominate a date). So, what do you want to read from me?

ExpandTopics and Dates as they are Nominated )

I'm traveling right now for work, and though it's beautiful here, it's also -- well, a lot of things, but mentally draining is one of them, so I've retreated to my hotel for the night. I see that the AO3 stats meme is going around again, and I think that might be nice and relaxing. Plus I'm really enjoying saving everyone else's to my To Read lists.

I have posted 231 stories to AO3, for a total of more than 680k words.

ExpandTop Ten By Hits )

I suppose it is no surprise that, since I spend most of my time in small fandoms, Glee dominates that list, despite the short amount of time I spent writing Glee stories. (Though I do still plan to finish the marching band au, at the very least. I hope.) Other than that, I see I've had no breakaway story, but the top ten are all pretty close in hit count. All but the first one were written for someone specifically, usually for Yuletide (or for Lexie for the majority of the Glee stories and the Scooby Doo fic). The first one was my tribute to a decade of posting stories in online fandom, and it remains one of the things I had the most fun writing.

Mostly, this just reminds me I want to write more fic soon. I miss it a lot. And you guys. Thank you for all your kind comments on my last post. You are THE BEST.
escritoireazul: (Glee Puck grinds again)
Not dead! Not having a great time of things, but not dead. Have a meme. First lines from my twenty-one most recent fics. None of which are from 2013 because I am not having a fannishly productive year so far, unfortunately.

Expand21 First Lines )

That sort of makes me want to write a story made up of lines from the fic I've written over the years. Maybe for my 15th online fandom anniversary, which will be coming up next year. (Wow, when did that happen.) In other news, I finally bought a tv (first time I've ever purchased one), and it is big and gorgeous and shiny, and it is really nice to have something on it while I'm working.

I'm really struggling with my mental health lately, so I don't know how much I'll be around, but I try to read as much as I can, and I miss you guys and fandom. What's going on with you, darlings?
escritoireazul: (Default)
I'm really enjoying everyone's What I'm Reading Wednesday posts, so I thought I'd start trying to do it too (at least sporadically, I'm not great at regular weekly posting).

What I Just Finished Reading

I finished this a couple days ago, Nobody by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I really love Barnes' Raised by Wolves and The Squad series(es), and enjoyed her last standalone. This one felt really slow to me, and the back and forth point of views kept throwing me out of the story at first, but eventually I got sucked in, and the world building was really, really interesting.

What I'm Reading

I just started (again, I read at least the first chapter awhile ago) Soulless by Gail Carriger. [livejournal.com profile] das_hydra has recced it to me more than once, and I'm more or less enjoying it, though I'm not much of a fan of stories set in Victorian London. (Except I loved studying Victorian lit back when I did my undergrad, so -- I don't know, I'm complicated?) But I'm really enjoying the werewolf and vampire politics and world building.

What I'm Reading Next

I ... have no idea. When We Wake by Karen Healey comes out in North America (it's already out in NZ/AUS, as far as I know), and I'm super excited to read the published version. However, I'll need something new to read before that, and I have no idea what will be next. I have boxes and boxes of books to unpack still, and I know I have unread books in there, but I want something in particular, I'm just not sure what. (Well, awesome werewolf stories, always. And fantastic teen supernatural adventures.)

holiday love meme 2012
my thread here

2012 was a hell of a year, and I could use some good thoughts.

Also, I'm going to try to track down people's threads now, but if you have a link handy, that would rock.

In other news, insomnia has clearly struck again (though at least this time it came with the pleasant surprise of internet access). I am considering going to the store, because I need to grocery shop and buy cards to mail, since I am not going to be able to make them this year. It will be nice and mostly empty this time of morning, I'm sure. Now if only I knew what I wanted to eat next week. I should grab one of the cookbooks I inherited from Mom, choose a couple meals to prepare over the weekend, and make a list.

Friending Meme

[personal profile] kouredios is having a friending meme here on Dreamwidth and here on livejournal, and it is awesome. I am finding so many people to add to my reading list. Hi, new people!

Here is what I said:

1. name: escritoireazul (DW, LJ, AO3, Tumblr, Twitter)
2. age(ish): early 30s
3. primary fandoms: I've posted fic in more than 50 fandoms, mostly Yuletide eligible. I am multifannish beyond belief, but mostly I love werewolves and crossovers and awesome women and families of choice. I'm keeping up with OUaT, Grimm, Castle, Bones, and Criminal Minds, will catch up on Sons of Anarchy over Christmas, and just finished a rewatch of season two of Fringe and am on to a rewatch of season three. (Partial rewatch, I had to stop watching partway through because of life issues.)
4. other stuff you're into, but maybe don't blog about (unless you find more people who'd want to hear about it): My motorcycle, my dad and my amazing siblings (my mom died recently, so I don't know how much I'll be talking about her any time soon), long-distance bffs (all my bffs are long distance now, alas, some longer than others), queer books, ya books, my mental illnesses (bipolar and ocd), and adoption. I rarely talk about my jobs, because I have a non-fannish journal for that. (Which I will tell you about if you ask, but I try not to link them too publicly.)
5. non-fannish interests?: See above.
6. my journal reads like...: Joy and babbling and anger. And werewolves.

This reminds me I should do a new about me post soon.

Written for me for Femslash 2012, and I love Jane and Darcy, and the way they use their words, and the delightful give and take between them.

TV on DVD

We've had a lot of family stuff going on since I moved, and so I've been out of town more often than not (and mostly at work when I am in town). Therefore, I haven't had the chance to get my internet set up yet, and have had a lot of time to watch things while unpacking and/or having insomnia, so much insomnia.

I started with a rewatch of Gilmore Girls (which, let me tell you, BEST IDEA right after Mom died) (and wow, yeah, those last couple seasons, what even was that?), then a rewatch of Teen Wolf season one while writing my Femslash 2012 story, mixed in with Veronica Mars season one. I've now moved on to Fringe after a quick break for a Creature Feature (Jurassic Park 1-3, Tremors 1-4, and Rogue), and just finished a rewatch of season two. I've seen at least the first half of season three, but I stopped watching at some point during season three because of life stuff. (Season three was my final year of grad school, I think, and there was a lot going on.) I have seasons one through four thanks to Amazon's big recent sale. I'm not sure what I'll move on to after that; maybe Community, which I also grabbed in the sale. Maybe it's time for another Buffy/Angel rewatch.

TV on DVD. It is the BEST. (No sarcasm this time.)

[livejournal.com profile] flamingnik requested the Glee poly family series, a/k/a Tied Up In Strings, and left choosing the specific section up to me, so here is some commentary on the first story in the series, Gimme Some Signs (October 2012).

So that was a thing.

Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

I can't guarantee I'll have actually useful things to say, but if I don't, I will try to lie in an entertaining manner. The majority of my fic is available at AO3, especially the past couple years worth. (I think it's still missing some of the 1999 fic, but not much of that.)

I've been feeling disconnected lately; not just fannishly, but definitely fannishly too. Everywhere else, it's fine, but I am sad that I don't feel fannishly connected right now. Fandom is such a fun place sometimes, but lately all I can see are the homophobic, racist, sexist, ableist, fat hating parts, and that gets tiresome. Plus I really miss writing fic, but I have no impetus to write anything. (Part of this is exhaustion. After work and professional writing, by the time I get to fic writing, there's just nothing left.)

Yuletide is coming, and before that, October and Halloween, and I love December Drabbles. Come on, fannishness, don't desert me now.
