Dear Yuletide Author,

It’s my favorite fannish time of year: Yuletide.

Do Not Wants and general likes, followed by fandom-specific details, below. If there’s a discrepancy between the DNWs/general likes and the fandom-specific details, go with the fandom-specific. Mixing and matching fandoms and prompts more than welcome.

My absolute favorite things: werewolves, crossovers and alternate universes (the stranger and more unusual the better), and monsters and magic.

I’m [archiveofourown.org profile] escritoireazul at AO3. Treat option is enabled.

It's been a rough few years, and again this year, my letter is not nearly as detailed as it used to be. Some sections may be longer than others simply because I pulled from previous requests. I want all of them equally. You can find old letters under the Yuletide tag if you want to see what I've written before.

Across the board, AUs I love: Werewolf packs. Teaming up to survive horror movie scenarios and save the girls (summer camp killers, haunted houses, cursed objects). Adventures in Space. Jaeger pilots. Elite athletes. Scientists fighting underground monsters. Weird west. Surviving inhospitable locations.

The other day I realized this will be my 17th Yuletide, and that reminded me that I haven't done a retrospective through 2020. In that time I've received at least 30 gift fics. (I think my count is missing some from the pre-AO3 days.)

I am nominating this for Yuletide, and I need help with one of the character names. The redhead is Megan, but the French brunette is whoever signed this letter (I think I've got the link where it should open right on the letter). There is an S at the beginning and maybe a z in there. Can anyone else actually read it?

Also: I love this fucking ad so damn much.

ETA: Many thanks to [personal profile] raine for finding the names! And to [personal profile] raine and [personal profile] paperscribe for pointing out the redhead is Gemma. Which I knew, and is what I meant to say, and I have no idea where Megan came from. I wasn't even listening to anything with the name Megan in it!

Anyway, Gemma and Sieza are headed to Yuletide!

I'm alive, and it is time for my fall fic exchange extravaganza, which is, of course, the time of year when I participate in fic exchanges. Trick or Treat and Yuletide definitely, they've been my tradition for several years now, and I had so much fun with Shipoween that I'm considering it this year, too, though I did find it a little stressful to have two exchanges on the same timeline.

What are you doing the rest of this year, y'all? Fic exchanges, but, you know, whatever else, too! I'm curious.

Trick or Treat

Nominations are done, sign-ups haven't started yet over at [community profile] trickortreatex. I'm thinking about requesting the following:

Dog Soldiers: Werewolves. I'd like some Megan backstory and possibly canon divergence or full on AUs.

Wild Country: ...also werewolves. I want more Kelly Ann in the future and possibly a look at the world building.

Tremors: RHONDA FOREVER. I want her to have more adventures with monsters, and I'm down for an OT3 for them. Maybe also Mindy and how she grows up knowing that monsters are real. (See, also, Lex Murphy from Jurassic Park.)

Silver Bullet: WEREWOLVES. Possibly something bloody and horrific, maybe Jane growing up to fight more monsters.

The Howling: Yes more werewolves.

Down in the Library Basement - Rona Vaselaar: Weird pseud-spider monsters, I KNOW, but I love this warm-hearted story, and I love Cassie, and I've had such good luck with fic for it before.

Shipoween

Basically same schedule here, nominations closed, sign-ups not open over at [community profile] shipoween. I'm considering:

Bones: A couple different OT3s I've wanted for a long time (Booth/Brennan/Hannah and Wendell/Jack/Angela)

Criminal Minds: I can never have enough Garcia/Alvez, especially now that the show has ended.

Crossovers: Ellie Myers from Cursed with pretty much all the other werewolves.

Cursed: Werewolf pack found family.

Jurassic Park Original Trilogy: LEX/KELLY FOREVER, maybe also Sarah/Malcolm/Nick

The Meg: Jaxx! Suyin! Meiying! I have all sorts of different combinations I'm debating.

Trick 'r Treat: MOAR WAREWOLVES

I may, you know, have some themes in the Halloween-era exchanges.

Yuletide

(Here's my Yuletide story retrospective through last year: 2005 - 2019.)

Nominations start later this month and the schedule is available over at [community profile] yuletide_admin. I have no real idea what I'm going to nominate yet, but I'm considering:

This Renault 30 Years in the Making ad with queer girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrNCVAqbCD0

This Porsche Heist ad: https://youtu.be/92sXWVxRr0g

Willow: SORSHA FOREVER

Tremors: again, more OT3 monster hunting

Mortel: OT3 monster hunting of a different sort!

The Ghost and the Darkness: maneaters!

The Half of It: a different sort of OT3, really.

I'm sure there are other potential nominations floating out there in my notes, but this is off the top of my head. What about y'all?

Two things.

One: I'm tempted to request this for Yuletide. Heists for everyone!

Two: I watched the first trailer for the new Fast and the Furious movie the day it dropped and promptly texted a bunch of people to shout. Under the cut is a recap of my reaction because it was A LOT. I cannot wait for this goddamn movie. I have loved this franchise since I saw Fast and the Furious in the theater back in 2001, and I cannot believe how far we've come.

Using the same format I did for the last retrospective, which included stories through 2017. As of 2019, I think I'm at 73 stories in Yuletide written for 53 people across 36 fandoms. I know sometimes there's talk of a treating clique, but of those 53, I think I knew 5 before I wrote for them the first time. Some of them have become friends since, but the majority of the people I treat are strangers with really interesting prompts.

Yuletide fandom summary (note that some stories were crossovers so fill multiple fandoms)

I did not write nearly as much as I wanted to for Yuletide this year, but I do like the stories I wrote quite a bit. I wrote four stories for three people in three fandoms, one of which was new for me.

Assignment: Draw Me Like You Do, BSC, Ashley/Claudia

Summary: Claudia Kishi does not expect to run into Ashley Wyeth at a yuppie artist retreat deep in the heart of the Ozarks, but Ashley's always known how to surprise her.

Treat: Five Secrets from an Art Portfolio, BSC, Ashley/Claudia

Summary: Claudia Kishi knew one thing for certain (well, many things, but this was an important one): there was a psychology to portfolios. If you knew how to look, you could uncover an artist’s secrets tucked into every page.

Treat: The Care and Handling of Maneaters, The Ghost and the Darkness, John Patterson/Helena Patterson

Summary: “I do not often repair bridges,” John said.

“True, but even old bridges under repair can become a hunting ground.”

“And what, pray tell, hunts the bridge at Langone?” he asked.

Helena waited until he looked up on her, eager not to miss a single breath of his response. “None other than the great Beast of Gévaudan.”

Treat: Burn, Lost Boys, Michael/Star

Summary: Max is dead and gone, body burnt and ashes spread into the sunlight, but still Star's thirst burns.

Yuletide is upon us! Both the main collection and the madness collection are open, and I can't wait to dive into them.

But first! I received three wonderful gifts in three different fandoms, and I am delighted by how good Yuletide was for me this year. On the recipient side, at least, I did not write as much as I wanted to write, mostly because this entire year has been filled with so much family and work stress that I'm drained here at the end.

My gifts, though, are amazing!

Batwoman

Fandom: DC's Arrowverse
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Characters: Kate Kane, Mary Hamilton (DCU)
Additional Tags: alternate universe - wild west

KATE KANE IN A WILD WEST AU! I love Kate and Mary here, and how Kate is so her even in this alternate setting, smart and sarcastic and flirty and blunt and strong and all the things I love about her.

Willow

you are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to howl (1815 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Willow (1988)

Many thanks to tigerbright for the beta. Title from Florence + the Machine.

Please look at those tags and marvel. MARVEL. Sorsha the werewolf of a sort and fierce and strong and a little broken and vulnerable, and Madmartigan loving her in all the things she is, and ugh, I love them both so much, and this story is everything I could have wanted from my request.

The Mummy

Woodlands (122 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Mummy Series
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Evy Carnahan O'Connell/Rick O'Connell

That summary, the opening line, the opening exchange between Rick and Jonathan had me laughing before I could even read the rest of it. It's such a cute story, perfectly true to the characters and the movie, and I love it.

Edited November 14, 2019: I always feel intimidated participating in something like the Wrapping Paper challenge for art treats because I don't have the right words to talk about art clearly, but I decided to give it a go this year. My comment is here.

Edited November 3, 2019, to add a Batwoman request now that I've started watching the show and fallen in love.

Dear Yuletide Author,

Yuletide is my favorite fannish time of the year, and I can’t wait to see what you create. It brings me great joy to write stories for people for Yuletide, and I hope that you have a lot of fun and a wonderful experience this Yuletide.

Below, I’ve provided some general likes and Do Not Wants, as well as a few thoughts about why I like specific fandoms and characters. If there is a discrepancy between the general likes and DNWs and the fandom-specific information, go with the fandom-specific information.

My absolute favorite things: werewolves, crossovers and alternate universes, and monsters and magic.

You can find me on DW, LJ, and AO3 as escritoireazul.

ETA: Between 2005 and 2018, I've written 69 stories for Yuletide. Oh yeah.

Yuletide's revving up for 2019 ([community profile] yuletide_admin), and I'm eager to hear if you'll be participating and, if so, what fandoms you're considering. I'm thinking:

Touchstone series by Andrea K. Höst: Portal sci-fi first person diary about an Australian teen who ends up walking through a portal onto a different planet which has been abandoned by its people due to monsters. When she's finally rescued from that planet, she ends up on a second planet crowded with people who fled the first planet and surrounded by fantastic technology and an ongoing war against the monsters. It's iddy and tropey and absolutely wonderful. Main trilogy, Gratuitous Epilogue all about romances and children (no, really, that's the title of the book), and a fourth novel from a different character's POV.

United States of Asgard series by Tessa Gratton: Norse gods are real and living among humanity. World building is interesting, though I have complaints about how indigenous peoples are treated, but the characters are my favorite part. Excellent human characters, and Fenris Wolf also appears as a teen girl named Glory. She is truly glorious.

Kisses & Curses: Mobile game about witches and romances and trying to save the world. Wonderful bisexual main character, great romance options, and one of the more satisfying stories I've experienced in a mobile game.

Confident - Demi Lovato: The music video, not the song itself, because I will never, ever, ever get enough of those women fighting each other and banding together and all the ways that world building can go.

Pushing Daisies: Adorable and charming murder mystery tv show ended far too soon with a protagonist who can bring things back to life and a cast of characters I adore. I'm really craving warm, sweet, chosen family case fic shenanigans, but if that's the only thing I want, period, I won't request it because that's not fair to a potential author. I want to give multiple prompts, any one of which I would be delighted to receive.

Agent Pendergast series by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child: Specifically focuses on Corrie Swanson (a teen in one of my favorite books who grows up to become an FBI agent) and Nora Kelly (a smart, brash anthropologist). Conveniently, a book about those two specifically just came out, which delighted me and made me want more stories about them.

Hobbs & Shaw: This would need an evidence post to separate it from the main Fast and the Furious series, which is ineligible, and I'm not sure such an argument would be all that successful since Luke and Deckard both appear in multiple Fast and Furious movies, but I am dying for Hattie Shaw and Samantha Hobbs fic, among a ton of other ideas.
escritoireazul: (Default)
I managed five Yuletide stories this year, my assignment and four treats. Not my most prolific year, but pretty damn good, and I'm proud of the stories I wrote.

Assignment: Out of Bounds and Off the Trail, Baby-Sitters Club by Ann M. Martin, Abby/Kristy (and ensemble)
Summary: Abby heads up to Shadow Lake for a long weekend of skiing, snowball fights, and hot chocolate. Add in an unrequited crush, two sets of best friends, and a blizzard, and the only thing Abby can think is this: At least we're not being stalked by a failed killer this time.

Treat: (Not a) Survival Group, Jurassic Park series/Jurassic World series, Lex/Kelly (and ensemble)
Summary: It's not a dinosaur survival group. Not really. It's just that, well, they all survived dinosaurs once. Or twice. Kelly hopes there will never be a third time for any of them.

Treat: No More Crossroads, No More Waiting, Thunderheart, Ray/Walter, soulmate AU
Summary: The movies got the soulmate thing all wrong.

(I 100% expected [livejournal.com profile] carlyinrome to guess this was me, but she swears she did not.)

Treat: Advance and Retreat, Avengers Grimm, Sleeping Beauty and Red Riding Hood
Summary: Beauty's magic fails her sometimes. Snow thinks it's high time she learned to fight. Red's the one given the job. No one is happy about this.

(New fandom! I've wanted to write for this for a few years now, and I was thrilled to find another fan.)

Treat: Say Hello to Your Friends (Again and Again and Again), Baby-Sitters Club by Ann M. Martin, Mallory/Jessi (and ensemble)
Summary: When Mary Anne gets married (again), Mallory and Jessi reunite with some old friends. It's not nearly as awkward as Mallory fears.
