I don't have a lot of time or energy to go into full detail about why I am linking to these stories, but I will say this: Everything I rec from Yuletide is a story that I enjoyed for some reason, frequently because they filled me with glee, and I want to share them with you, too.

Aladdin

The Hunt for Man-Yu-El (3003 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Aladdin (1992)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Aladdin/Jasmine
Characters: Rajah, Genie (Aladdin)
Summary:

At sunset on the third day since the second water purifier had stopped, the city of Agrabah limped along in a state of controlled chaos.

The royal fountains and pools were empty; the use of water for bathing and watering of plants was strictly limited, which put the nobles out of temper, greatly gratified the smallest children at bedtime, and added a whole new level of pungency to the bazaar. The bakers in the streets sold a drastically reduced selection at astronomical prices; at the back gates of the palace, a line of hungry beggars stretched and snaked out into the city, and the Queen's cooks fed them on baked vegetable balls and salads, anything but bread; and kebab stalls had sprung into being like goosebumps after a cold wind, hawking roasted lamb so fast that the shepherds were fast becoming the happiest demographic in the city, and the sheep the most worried.

The sheep, and the Queen.

Yuletide fic recs )
escritoireazul: (Yuletide)
First, I have five stories in the regular Yuletide collection. Three are over 2000 words, two over 1000 words. Three are new fandoms, two are old fandoms. As usual, if you guess which stories are mine, I will give you a prize. Generally this is more fic, but I may switch that up some this year. Comments are screened for that reason.

Second, I received three stories for Yuletide, because apparently Yuletide rewards naughty girls who have basically disappeared for months at a time. Three incredible, wonderful stories that fill me with glee. Because I'm in the middle of holiday and family stuff this year, I can't leave the detailed feedback I normally leave, though I will later, and I'm not sure how quickly I'll be able to read other stories in the archive, but I wanted to rec these three stories immediately, because they are MUST READS.

Let It Out and Let It Breathe
Fandom: Cursed
Summary: In the aftermath of a different choice, they make a life out of the wreckage.

This is the Cursed story I have always, always wanted. The Ellie narration is fantastic, an amazing balance between strong and sure and slightly vulnerable. I love the little details about living together as a pack and what it takes to be domesticated werewolves, and the background werewolf threesome was an amazing bonus. Read this story if you love created families and fantastic women narrators and werewolves.

My Chick Bad
Fandom: Fast and the Furious series
Summary: Just another night at work becomes the start of something more for Mari.

Mari's point of view is amazing and cuts into this world like a knife. She's not a street racer, and the perspective she provides on the posturing men is a fantastic turn of the (flawed) car gods they are in the movies. And the sex between Mari and Letty is hot as hell.

Consequence
Fandom: Blue Crush
Summary: This is what happens after Anne-Marie acts like an idiot.

Eden is gorgeous here and heartbreaking at the same time. The sex between Eden and Kala is super hot, but it carries a bittersweet flavor because neither of them are getting what they actually want. I love the way their friendship shines through everything between them and between Eden and Anne Marie. One of my favorite parts is the subtle bit about Anne Marie treating Eden like a queer experiment and how very much that sucks for Eden.

Fandom: FAST AND THE FURIOUS SERIES
Pairing: Mia/Letty
Length: 4400 words
Author on LJ: [profile] brandil (but no longer active)
Author Website: LJ Fic Tag
Why this must be read:

(Note: Another Yuletide story for me.)

It's such a simple premise -- Letty moves in with Mia after prison -- but it's so delightfully layered as Letty and Mia struggle to find the ways their lives fit together with all the guys gone. It's down to just them and they are very different people than they were in The Fast and the Furious, but they are also very much the same.

I really enjoy the romance, which is more about two people trying to learn to be friends and Mia trying not to resent all the pieces she's had to pick up for Dom and Letty trying to deal with being free again. I found it lovely and sharp and believable.

Fandom: FAST AND THE FURIOUS SERIES
Pairing: Dom/Brian UST
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [personal profile] carodee
Author Website: Carodee's Insatiable Site
Why this must be read:

(Note: I betaed this fic. Yes, despite my lack of interest in Dom/Brian and my dislike of Brian. I do so love Dominic, helping people, and Carodee's writing.)

"What He Can Have" is an excellent Dominic piece with a fantastic, strong character voice, and a masturbation scene that will heat the coldest room. It's difficult to take an action movie with a tough guy main character and keep him in character while balancing his tough guy exterior, his more emotional side (here particularly the family loyalty at the core of the movie and the character of Dominic), and some really hot lust.

The language is particularly effective, catching little details which build into an intense short story.

Title: Her Attention by [personal profile] nikitangel
Pairing: Sort of Mia/Letty, Faith/Letty. Faith's a big flirt.
Author on LJ: [personal profile] nikitangel
Author Website: Fic Tag on LJ
Why this must be read:

(Note, this was another story written for me. Because have I mentioned I really push Faith/Letty on people? A lot? Yeah, I do.)

"Her Attention" nicely captures all three women and their various attitudes. Set after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended but before The Fast and the Furious, it revels in the way powerful women can size each other up and check each other out, and the way there's an edge to their flirting. Faith's awareness of her own sexuality is wonderful, as is her knowledge that she turns on other people just by strutting into a room.

There's some subtle bite to the exchanges between Letty and Mia, too, the way Letty demands so much from the people around her and how Mia is awkward in her love.

And, as always, there's Dom in the background, not even the point of the story, but always, always there.

Fandom: FAST AND THE FURIOUS SERIES
Pairing: Gen, but with Letty/Dominic and some Mia/Brian
Length: short one-shot
Author on LJ: [personal profile] obsessivemuch
Author Website: LJ fic tag
Why this must be read:

First, a disclaimer: "Loyalty" was written for me for the 2009 [community profile] apocalyptothon (which is an incredible ficathon that brings the apocalypse to a wide range of fandoms). I never actually expected to get Fast and the Furious apocalypse fic from it, and I was thrilled when I received this story. (One of my fandom goals is to encourage more people to write Fast and the Furious fic which includes an apocalypse, Letty/Dominic and/or Letty/Mia, so this worked well for me.)

You should read this story because it does a wonderful job of presenting the idea of family and who does and doesn't belong against a backdrop of horror and the end of the world. It has all the things I love most about the series: the family ties that bind even when you don't believe in them, the way Letty loves and is protective of both Mia and Dominic, Dom trying so hard to protect both his girls, Mia being stubborn and strong, the incredible teamwork between Letty and Dominic, and everyone struggling so hard to protect the people they love, set against a delightfully creepy apocalypse.

Basically, Mia, Letty, and Dominic are on the run, trying to survive the end of the world, when Brian shows up again and Mia's ideas of family and love run up against Letty's hatred of anyone who has ever hurt her people. They band together, but an apocalypse story really has no happy ending.

My favorite Letty and Dominic bit, which also nicely shows off how Mia feels about Brian:

I'm reccing Fast and the Furious series fic at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van this month, and I thought I'd crosspost them here, too, though most of these I think I've already recced in my journal. It's been awhile, though.

---

Hi all. I'm driving the crack_van for the Fast and the Furious series this month. I was waiting to rec anything until I finished an updated fandom overview (this overview is really useful, but there's been a fourth movie since it was written), but it is taking longer than I expected. Instead, I will start reccing stories, and I'll put up the fandom overview when I get a chance.

In short, I love the Fast and the Furious series because it deals with created families, loyalty, love, friendship, and an evolving sense of self all wrapped up in shiny, fast cars and super hot characters. Good times. Mostly, I love the different ways families are created, the way they hurt each other and help each other, the way they're filled with love and hate.

A huge part of the fandom is mostly interested in boy slash, but my interests lean toward girl slash, gen, and het, so my recommendations will echo that interest. (I'm also a big fan of crossovers, so look for those on the appropriate day.)

For my first rec, a story that so very well encompasses family it fills me with emotion every time I read it.

Why this must be read:

"Gravity" encompasses so much of what I love about The Fast and the Furious in general and Letty and Mia in particular. It's a lovely story about families, born and created, and the way your family can hurt you even while trying to take care of you, and how loss can rock a family to the core without actually destroying it.

More reasons you should read this fic. )

Yay, fandom, for giving me so many Fast and the Furious things to enjoy.

Fic

[profile] crimson_keys wrote an awesome comment!fic for me about Letty and Dom, the hunt and the chase. (LJ link)

[personal profile] senmut wrote "Unexpected Angels", a Fast & Furious/Transformers crossover which made me smile. (DW link)

[personal profile] thedeadparrot wrote "Triangulation", set during Fast & Furious, about Letty and Brian working together. It's a sharp fic, and Letty's attitude comes through so well. I am not a Brian fan - I find him too eager and annoying - but I love this story, and I'm even fairly fond of him in it. (LJ link)

[personal profile] azephirin wrote "Hand in the Pocket, Finger on the Steel", a Fast & Furious/Buffy crossover which filled me with glee. It's Faith and Dom working together and it is so much fun. (LJ link)

Vid

[personal profile] talitha78 vidded "MMM Papi". As I said earlier, I'm not a fan of Brian and therefore not a fan of Dom/Brian, but this vid is a lot of fun. I particularly like how big parts of it can be seen as a lovesong to the hotness of Dominic Toretto and cars. (LJ link)

Fast and the Furious

[personal profile] ilyena_sylph has a number of lovely drabbles in this post, but this Letty coming home to Mia one in particular is lovely and hurtful and wonderful. (DW link.)

[profile] crimson_keys wrote "Cried Out" for me, based, I think, on some of the prompts I requested for the [community profile] apocalyptothon exchange this year. (I posted my prompts in my journal to encourage people to join the ficathon - and, yes, to maybe get people thinking about the joy of such things and it worked!) It's Letty, Mia, and Dom at the end of the world and there are these sharp little insights from Letty which I love.

The Lost Boys and The Labyrinth

[personal profile] senmut wrote "World of Gray" based on a prompt from me, a crossover where I requested Star and Sarah, after their magic has ended, coming together. It's an amazing story, absolutely wonderful and haunting, and it leaves me wishing for more of their stories coming together. (DW link.)

They say like calls to like. They say all children must grow up.Sometimes, they say too much, and the heartbreak sets in when the magicfades away, leaving nothing but a world immersed in grays.

---

I am approximately 1500 words into another Fast and the Furious/Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover (yeah, I know) and I'm watching Leverage. It took me awhile to get into the first episode but then it clicked for me and I started to love it. I'm not actually sure which episode I'm on now; it's the second one I'm watching, but I'm catching them sporadically with my dvr (after a glitch that dumped a whole marathon of them a month or so ago - ouch, dvr, ouch!) and I don't think they're being aired in order anyway? But basically I'm too lazy to go figure out the order myself, since I'm writing and reading fanfic. Maybe later. I want to buy it on dvd when it comes out, though, so that's good.

---

I got free comics today. I love free comic book day, and I went to a store I'd never visited before to get them, and it's about two minutes down the street from me, and now I intend to go back frequently. I don't run a pull list because I don't want to store comics, I prefer graphic novels, but they had an excellent selection of games and graphic novels and it felt nice to be in a store full of things I love. I spend to omuch of my time around people who don't understand such things and who don't want to be geeks. I need to embrace awesome geekery.

So I've been up for the past couple hours reading "How We Are" by [livejournal.com profile] catalinay. It's a WIP, which I don't normally read because being unable to finish what I start drives me absolutely crazy, but it was such fun it sucked me right in anyway, from the moment I read a brief excerpt from it. So far it is eighty chapters, but some of them are quite short, and it is a quick read.

It's the story of Letty and Dom, told in alternating points of view, and it is absolutely lovely. I don't often read fic for the movie because a lot of the time Letty is written as a useless one-note character, but here she's vibrant and just comes to life.
escritoireazul: (resident evil girlfriends)
I haven't had much time to look at the Yuletide archive, to my sadness, but I do have one story you all need to read. It was the story written for me, in the The Fast and the Furious fandom, and it is all about Mia picking up the pieces and Letty after prison. Their characterizations are wonderful, and it's a lovely, plausible story.

"Flowers Can Grown Between the Cracks in the Sidewalk"

Go, read, and leave my author feedback, because ze deserves it very much.
escritoireazul: (blue crush giddy)
My birthday was 30 January and [livejournal.com profile] nikitangel wrote me a story for it. An amazing, wonderful story which fills me with glee every single time I read it. She took three of my favorite characters (Letty, Mia, and Faith), and tossed them together in a short, sharp scene which is packed full of all three women being true to their characters. Their voices, their actions, the entire tone of the story, it's all just perfect, just exactly right for the show, the movie, and my preferences.

In short, Rebecca took everything I love about those characters and the source material and put it in a perfect little story for me.

So you should all go read!

"Her Attention", set before the movie and after the television series.

Really, it's three excellent women who are even better all together.

Thank you again, Rebecca!

We'll call this the small fandom rec list (more or less).

The Mighty Ducks:

If you've never read The Mighty Queertet, please, hop on over to Queertet dot net and read the stories. Once you're through, come read the new version, Queertet Revisited, which takes the original slashy pairings and splits them all up into chaos. The Mighty Queertet is the main slash series of the fandom (and [livejournal.com profile] thestalkycop was one of the first people to post MD slash, if not the first), and Queertet Revisited has the same fun and angst wrapped up in even better writing and character development.

The Baby-Sitters Club:

+ Otherwise Very Romantic by [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle. This is a very sweet and sad and touching Mary Anne/Mallory story set at Christmas time. It's odd (but not out of place) to see which characters react the best and the worst to the fact Mary Anne and Mallory are a couple and I think it rings true on many levels. Christmas is a family time, but not necessarily a good time.

+ To Change by [livejournal.com profile] celeria, a delicious hot Claudie/Stacey adult fic. I love the characterization and how she's built on the actual canon and turned thirteen-year-old girls into strong and scared and caring almost adults. And the sex was fabulous.

+ Understatement by [livejournal.com profile] mizzmarvel, a sweet (almost candy sweet) Jessi/Mallory story about first kisses and coming back from boarding school and being best friends.

The Fast and the Furious:

+ What He Can Have by [livejournal.com profile] carodee. This is a great Dominic piece, with a strong character voice, and an incredibly hot solo sex scene. I mean, damn, people, damn. It's hard to take a tough guy movie, with a tough guy main character, and keep a balance between tough guy and the family loyalty at the core of the movie and the character. Caro Dee does a brilliant job.

1. Total number of fandoms you like:

I'm not even sure anymore. I used to define fandom as one I watched/read the source material as well as writing and/or reading (mostly writing) as well. Now, however, my fandom definition is so vast I could probably include everything I've ever experienced. Ever.

But to name a few of my favorites: The Lost Boys, The Fast and the Furious Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddick, The Baby-Sitters Club, The Mighty Ducks, X-Men (mostly movieverse, Ultimate, and Uncanny), Tamora Pierce, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel, Firefly/Serenity, House, Lost, Harry Potter, and I'm going to stop now, because there are so many.

2. My first fandom ever:

I can't remember my first actual fandom, because I always made up stories for various books and movies (especially books). My first active online fandom was Buffy the Vampire Slayer way back in the beginning of the series. It's also the first fandom in which I ever wrote fanfic.

3. My most recent fandom:

Serenity technically, because I just saw it last Thursday.

The most recent one I've been writing in (new one, I mean) is The Fast and the Furious. I think.

4. Five fandoms that mean a lot to me:

+ The Lost Boys I enter and leave other fandoms at random, but I have a feeling I will always be at least a small part of this fandom. It brought me so much, from writing practice to friends to family to my decidedly healthy (especially as compared to the unhealthy one for Vin Diesel) love for the many talents of Billy Wirth
+ Buffy the Vampire Slayer Even though I rarely write it anymore and even more rarely read it, the first is always special, you know. Again with the friends and support and writing practice.
+ Lost [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's recaps bring humor, I love Locked, Hurley makes my day, and it's a love I share with one of my sisters. I can appreciate that shared fandom.
+ Firefly/Serenity I share this love with another of my sisters, adore the cowboys in space idea, love the theme music, can't get enough of the characters, and absolutely cannot wait for the rest of you to see the movie because I want to talk about it more than I can say.
+ Tamora Pierce Her books never grow old, not a one of them. I've read this books since I was young, maybe even earlier than preteen, and I always, always want more. I've not read a lot of fiction, but what I have is usually interesting and fun. I include this because I really want to write fanfic for it, but I've not found anything worth writing yet, because the original stories are just so damn good.

5. Tag five people: You. Yes. You.* Any of you interested. I'm bad at tagging people and I wasn't tagged, anyway.

I've had this journal almost a year and I've written only 103 entries, counting this one. I'm very quiet here, as compared to my main journal anyway.

I need to talk about Serenity soon, but ... I can't decide if I want to do it just yet.

House's snark is hard to write. I'm just not funny, not even snarky funny. Damn it.

* Oh lord, I just quoted a teenage chick lit book.
