If I had an active fannish Twitter or Tumblr, I would have added to my profile: 100% Absolutely Positively Not a Hugo Award Winner. But I don't, so I shan't.

The Fanlore write-up of the controversy.

This is really putting me off the Hugos and Worldcon. Feels like another cultural clash in SFF, and I am really fucking tired of them. They're necessary and good changes can come out of them, but so tired.

I'd be interesting in hearing people's thoughts on why they do or don't attend Worldcon and ways to enjoy it if you do or things to watch out for, etc. There's some potential things brewing over the next couple years, and I always love hearing about people's experiences.

I'll be at Wiscon. Let me know if you'll be there and if you want to hang out. I'm there Thursday evening through Tuesday morning, and I'm staying at the host hotel. I'm driving and picking up a friend along the way; it's about 8 hours each way for me, and I'm excited to listen to some podcasts and audiobooks and, of course, drive with the windows down and the music up.

2014 Master List

[personal profile] melsheartsthings: Talk to me about your convention experiences and what worked and what didn't.

Conventions aren't a big part of my fannish life. I went to Wiscon for a few years (30, 31, and 32), and to the WriterCon that took place in 2009. (I actually had to go back to [livejournal.com profile] nikitangel's archive to even get the convention name right.) I also worked a few smaller local conventions back in the early 2000s, when I was a part of a start up gaming company.

I like the idea of conventions a lot; I like shared experiences and the joy of discussing things I love with people who love them, too. I had a wonderful time at Wiscon and WriterCon. But I'm not much of a people person. I dislike crowds, I am bad at networking, and I know I come across as cold and standoffish with new people a lot of the time.

The three years I went to Wiscon, I stayed off site with friends ([livejournal.com profile] cabell the first year and [livejournal.com profile] nikitangel the other two years). When I go back, I'll be staying in the host hotel. I think that will help a lot; staying off site meant I didn't easily have a quiet place to go when I needed a break. (No, the quiet room doesn't work for me. It still has people.) My plan is to go back next year, for Wiscon 40, and have a reunion with my writing group, but if the job situation doesn't work out soon, that will have to come off the table.

I like being on panels a lot, and I mostly attend panels, very few paper readings or book readings. I like the parties to the extent that I like to hang out with my friends, but as I said, I'm not great at working a room, and I often feel like I'm penalized for that, even at Wiscon. I love things like the karaoke party and the new people dinner. I like being able to take a break to explore the city, or simply lounge around the pool or hang out in someone's room while we decompress a bit. I love talking to people about their projects, and meeting small press representatives, and all the media available. I love taking the physical schedule and highlighting all the places I want to be, and second choices, and figuring out when and where to meet people. I love random games in the con suite, and fun conversations in the hallways, and the energy that fills the place. There are shitty parts to conventions just like everywhere else (I've personally run into fat hate, racism, and homophobia), but there's also that feeling of being surrounded by my people, and I miss that. I hope I get to go back soon.

In short: best convention would be packed full of activities and people, and involve a private room where I can go be alone at the point where everything is too much and I'm about to snap. Then back to chaos.

I bought my ticket for [community profile] writercon.

I have a Dreamwidth account: escritoireazul. Please feel free to add me there if you have one too. I'll be crossposting once I figure out an easy way to do it; I'm not really sure what I think about it yet.

I signed up for [community profile] apocalyptothon: Sign up here.

Man, I'm really working that inclusion of the Fast and the Furious franchise, aren't I? Hee.

I'm so tired and frustrated at Castle even though I haven't watched the episode yet (did you really have to go there? REALLY?) and I think I'm going to bed.

I tried to buy my Writercon 2009 ticket to add to my list of things I accomplished today (so far, it's a short list), but the payment won't go through and I'm too foggy-headed to troubleshoot it. Anyone know if their paypal system is messed up right now? I'll try again tomorrow (or will at least be able to ask for help tomorrow, I hope). (Also, I can't decide what to put on my badge. I'd like it to read like this:

Carla
escritoireazul

but I don't know if that's possible. Maybe I'll make my own LJ sticker with my default icon, a la what they do at Wiscon.)

I'll be driving from Kansas City; it looks like it's less than seven hours, which actually makes it the shortest road trip of the summer. Most of August is open right now, and I don't know what I'll be doing during it, but the idea of my car and my music and the open road is intoxicating.

I'm rooming with [livejournal.com profile] nikitangel. It's a little weird to be attending a convention that isn't Wiscon, and to attend one without [livejournal.com profile] kphoebe, [livejournal.com profile] revena, [livejournal.com profile] chr0me_kitten, [livejournal.com profile] cabell, etc. I already know how to be comfortable in person with them, and that's not something I am good at being.

Still, I keep pushing myself to try new things, and this is something I've really been looking forward to doing. [livejournal.com profile] nikitangel started talking it up in 2006, and though I couldn't attend that year, since I didn't learn about it until May, I'm glad to go this year.

Who else is going? We should hang out.

(My computer wants to restart. I'm going to bed.)

Y'all! Writercon 2009 is ON! Click here for more information. Not to mention, it is in Minneapolis, which isn't too far from where I'll be working this summer. (Flying or driving will be an option.) AND, it is the weekend after I finish work. Literally, the weekend after. So not only will I have the time to go, but I will have just finished working at a firm for the summer.

I may not get to go to Wiscon this year (because of work, mostly), but at least I have one convention to which I can look forward. What a way to end my summer employment!

So! Are you going to Writercon 2009?
escritoireazul: (vin running out of time)
So this is a long, long weekend for me. Yesterday I worked the main job 8 to 5, and there was a tornado nearby and I spent the whole afternoon dealing with emergency calls and then I worked at CogCon 14 at the XGN table hosted by Pixelated from 5 to 11. Today I'm at the main job from 8 to 12 and then back at the LAN table until 11, and tomorrow I'm there 8 to 6.

So, if you're in central Missouri and are attending CogCon (you can get in free just to watch and see what it's like), come visit me. Today I'm wearing a green shirt with dice on the front and the saying "Choose your weapon", a long-sleeve orange shirt under it, and I'll probably be reading my X-Men trades behind the XGN/Pixelated table.

Yesterday when I took a break from the computer gaming (which I don't do most of the time, and so I played two different games for the first time yesterday, in public, and made a fool of myself as I flailed and was killed often--still fun, though), I bought some things. X-Men trades and two sets of dice, even though I'm not currently gaming. But one set was this pearly blue which I've been trying to find for two years now, ever since my original set disappeared. It was meant to be.

I also bought Ultimate X-Men/Ultimate Fantastic Four, House of M, and Decimation: X-Men The 198. I read House of M yesterday, and oh, what an ending. I guess The 198 picks up right after? I hope.

Unfortunately, no one had any Ultimate X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, or Fables I didn't already own. I hope to see an update selection today, which is the main day of the convention.

It looks like 2006 is my year for conventions. I had never been to one before WisCon 30, and here I am at CogCon 14. That's not very many, but for my first year doing it, I'm pleased. (Would have liked to hit WriterCon and DragonCon, but there are other years.)

I need a nap. Instead I am going to drink my hot, sweet, milky tea (Tetley, provided for me by [livejournal.com profile] thestalkycop straight from England) and read my flist. I've hit a lull in the day, though there were plenty of calls first thing this morning. I need a nap.

To sum up where I've been:

+ WisCon, which was marvelous, and involved meeting a number of wonderful people, most for the first time (and including [livejournal.com profile] nikitangel who was absolutely brilliant and actually had Michelle Rodriguez vids and clips on her iPod which we watched at a party, which is just one of many signs of how wonderful she is), being introduced to Alias (the comic) by [livejournal.com profile] kphoebe's paper presentation, lots of interesting panels, seeing the fantastic [livejournal.com profile] cabell again (I stayed with her, actually), meeting [livejournal.com profile] revena (and loving her car), and on and on and on. I left it feeling positive for the first time in awhile, because I met so many women who are out there, in the world, making a difference.

+ Nevada and Utah, which was a fun, relaxing vacation with J.

+ attending wedding events for a local friend

+ working. a lot. more than a lot.

+ riding my motorcycle

Did I mention that before I disappeared (for six plus weeks)? I bought a '78 Honda 400 Hawk, which is a small bike, but just the right size for me. It's a neat little bike, and I'm having fun riding back and forth to work and around in the sun. (Yes, I'm careful and wear my helmet and heavy jeans and solid boots. I don't want to break my brain.)

I probably have skip three million to read, and there is no way I can catch up on over six weeks of posts, so please point me to things of interest.
escritoireazul: (ana-lucia rockstar)
I should have posted this awhile ago, but I'm going to be pretty absent around livejournal for the next two weeks. I've been getting ready for Wiscon, plus working a ton, Wiscon is next weekend, and then I'm on holiday with J. for a week in Nevada and Utah.

Thank you to everyone who provided information on my question about young adult fantasy writing. You really, really helped, and I appreciate it so much.

There are so many things up in the air right now, personally and professionally, and I can't really talk about any of them. Frustrating, but it could all work out in fantastic ways. I hope.

I miss you guys, but I'll be back.

(Also, anyone going to Wiscon who wants to meet up? [And not hook up, which is not precisely what I meant to say.] Hit me via email [escritoireazul@gmail.com] and I'll get you contact information, as well as the two panels I will be on.)
escritoireazul: (faith wistful)
What are some of your most and least favorite of the juvenile and young adult fantasy novels published in the last year or so? Harry Potter is on the list, of course, but this is all beyond Harry Potter.

To start the ball rolling, here are some off the top of my head.

Tamora Pierce The Will of the Empress, a book which follows two quartets, Circle of Magic and The Circle Opens.

Jenny Nimmo Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors, book four of the series The Children of the Red King. The first book very much reminded me of Harry Potter, but as the series progresses, it has grown and changed. I actually like parts of it much more than Harry Potter.

Christopher Paolini Eldest, sequel to Eragon. I have to admit, I haven't read either of them, because I started Eragon and was so disgusted by the writing style I couldn't make it more than a couple chapters in. Weak, weak writing and very derivative.

Eoin Colfer The Opal Deception, book four of the Artemis Fowl series. I loved the first two books to this, but haven't read the later ones. I really should, before Wiscon.

Eoin Colfer Half-Moon Investigations, about which I know absolutely nothing. Has anyone read this?

Jonathan Stroud Ptolemy's Gate, book three of The Bartimaeus Trilogy. I haven't read any of these, and I probably should.

Angie Sage Septimus Heap, Book Two: Flyte. I haven't even heard of this author. Anyone?

Okay, let's get the discussion going. Any thoughts? Favorites? Most hated? Why?
escritoireazul: (bones research)
Well.

Ficathon assignment emailed at the last second possible (well, that's not true, I had a whole thirty minutes left) late because I forgot about the eastern timezone part of the deadline. Foiled! I started and restarted this assignment so many times because each option was wonderful and I wish I could have written more stories (and I may still, unofficially, later). I like the one I completed, but I like the partial stories, too.

This after K. and I spent a couple of hours buying material for my Wiscon fancy-dress outfit (and a few groceries to tide me over until I leave next week). Plus I had a long phone call from J., which is unusual and is not. I hate the phone, but I've learned to talk to J. pretty well over it--not all that often, but I can do it.

I'm getting through my Do Before Wiscon list at a slow pace, but I'm getting there.
escritoireazul: (vin running out of time)
Okay, say there was going to be a fancy dress party in a few weeks, at a convention maybe, and the theme was the Carnivale di Venezia, the Carnival of Venice, what kind of costume ideas would you have for me, taking two things into consideration, a) that I don't know how to do my own regular make-up and b) this has to not only travel to the convention in a car but then be able to fit into a suitcase to make the flight to Salt Lake City after?

It's been a long time since I came up with a costume for a fancy dress anything. Suggestions?

Also, internet is back on at home, so I hope to do a bunch of posting this weekend of writing things I have finished but could not post.
escritoireazul: (supernatural living on the run)
My flist is filled with joy about this already, but I had to add mine, too. On September 5, just two days after J.'s birthday, Supernatural will be available on dvd, with some fun extra. I cannot wait! Giddy, giddy, giddy.

Of course, tonight is the finale and then what will I do with my Thursdays? Woe! But excited.

I'm trying to make a decision about [livejournal.com profile] winchestercon. I would really like to go, and some of my favorite people are going, and I would finally get to meet [livejournal.com profile] buhfly after having her on the flist of my other journal for ages, but I am supposed to be saving up for my trip to England to see [livejournal.com profile] thestalkycop after this month's Wiscon and Salt Lake holiday. I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] impatienke would be interested in the con; I shall have to ask her.

I had to go buy soda today, to restock the shop supplies, and I saw her for the first time in weeks. Really, it is very sad I have to go to my sister's place of employment in order to see her, but it is so much my fault and not hers, I've had so much editing and overtime at work and sheer exhaustion.

LESS THAN AN HOUR NOW!

Yay V-Day shopping more or less done. (Okay, more less than more, but whatever.) Present for the girl, ordered and sent and she loves it (because I told her it would be late and went ahead and showed her what it was), present for the boy picked out and will order this weekend, but he knows it will be late and loves it (okay, I'm bad with the secret part of gifts, all right? When they will be late, I want to tell people!). Now I just need to buy cards and little things for my friends, which is no pressure. (Not that the big gifts were pressured, they are just the most important ones.)

Plus as my gift to myself I registered for WisCon. Woo. Fun and exciting times.

The boy sent me my V-Day gifts with my birthday gifts, gourmet organic foods which are awesome and delicious.

I also need to write stories for V-Day. I have a Mighty Ducks story I'm writing for the girl and maybe something else I don't know yet. Plus other fanfic things not related to the pink day. (I hate pink, and the pink day, mostly.) Plus all that original writing.

Yay shopping mostly done. Now to post about serious V-Day things.
