I did not participate in Chocolate Box even to write treats, though that was originally my plan after Yuletide, but the collection is open, and I am so excited to read the stories!

[community profile] apocalyptothon 2009 fics are being posted this weekend and though I've been away from blogging for awhile now, I'm going to do some recs. I love apocalypse fics. Here's the Masterlist of Fic.

[profile] ryhana wrote "Cold Snap", Harry Potter.
Summary: Something came back with the children when school broke for the summer, something evil.

It is delicious and shivery and frightening. I had goose bumps and chills after reading it.

[personal profile] beckyh2112 wrote "After the Fall", Harry Potter.
Summary: Hermione Granger is a Gryffindor, and she isn't going to stop being brave or taking care of people just because everything has come crashing down.

This is another delightfully creepy story with a Hermione I really believed.

[personal profile] katemonkey wrote "The Rational World", Supernatural.
Summary: The rational world is the hardest of all.

Delicious, twisty Castiel and Ruby story which actually had me not disliking Castiel. The language is perfect.

[personal profile] afrocurl wrote "Whimper", Veronica Mars.
Summary: Wallace is the only one! Or how to potentially survive the Apocalypse.

This is sharp and slow at the same time, a slow build throughout the story which made my toes curl and my spine bow. I love Wallace here, and the burn down to the end of the world with a whimper.

[personal profile] entangled_now wrote "We Go In Waves", Pushing Daises.
Summary: In which Ned may have caused the apocalypse.

Olive's voice is done so well here, and the plagues creepy and terrifying. The end has just enough hope in the middle of the apocalypse that I was left smiling.

[personal profile] akire_yta wrote "Hard Light", Dresden Files (bookverse).
Summary: The morning after the world ends changes every morning after that.

It ends very abruptly, which both fits into the end of the world, but is also kind of frustrating because the whole of the story seems to be building to a fight that just doesn't happen. It's a wonderful story on the way, though, with some fantastic characterization.

[personal profile] eisoj5 wrote "Ghost Riders in the Sky", Harry Potter.
Summary: Ten years after Deathly Hallows, a new challenge looms.

Fantastic and creepy and slightly heartbreaking. The characterization is sharp and I am left with chills and the need for more.

[personal profile] missmara wrote "Aim for the Head", Bones.
Summary: Angela Montenegro had always been of the 'make love not war' type, but that didn't mean she wasn't ready and willing to make a couple head shots to protect her people.

Angela is fantastic, kick ass and smart and still so full of love. I love the energy of the apocalypse and the way she keeps fighting no matter what happens.

[personal profile] missmara wrote "The Good Fight", Bones/Angel.
Summary: Dr. Temperance Brennan had always thought she would be the last person to lose her mind completely...

The explanation for the Angel and Booth thing is kind of crazy, but pretty fitting for Angel, at least. I love the characterization, fighting vampires at the end of the world, and the team working together.

[personal profile] maharetr wrote "Out Beyond the Breakers", X-Men Movieverse.
Summary: The first time Rogue kisses her, it’s the end of the world.

It's Kitty/Rogue and zombies and fighting at the end and it gave me chills and made me want to cry and made me want to go fight things. Kitty's amazing here, both what she does and who she is, and the whole world crashing down around them they still fight. I love it.

[personal profile] originalpuck wrote "Howling at the Moon: The Party at the End of the World", Harry Potter.
Summary: The Marauders always swore that their friendships would mean more to them than their individual lives. Now that a disaster has struck, and creatures are nibbling on the few survivors, their bonds are tested and bent into something new and altogether less forgiving.

Sirius's voice is sharp and in character. The end of the world is amazing, twisted and wonderful, and the way the characters interact, the sacrifices they make, so perfectly spot on.

[personal profile] cjmarlowe wrote "I'll Never Forget the Way You Look Tonight", Supernatural.
Request: The apocalypse has nothing to do with angels, demons, or Winchesters. They just get to enjoy it.

Fun and funny and Dean being awesome and Bobby being bad ass and Sam fretting and aliens. I'm not really sure what more you could ask for from a story like this. It was fantastic.

"Goodbyes (Strange, What Is Still Here Remix)"

Summary: Harry doesn't even know how to start.

This is kind of heartbreaking, Harry trying to tell Teddy about his parents. It's painful and lovely all at once.

"A Second Breath (The Jacob's Ladder Remix)"

Summary: Her skin is smooth once more, pale, unmarked, but bones don’t forget, and neither does Luna.

This is heartwrenching, and beautiful, and I mourned the end because I didn't want to stop reading this lovely, lovely world. Luna's voice here is perfection, and the characters so very true to themselves.

"Goldfish Bowl (Glass Houses Remix)"

Summary: It's hard being normal in the goldfish bowl.

Bobby's characterization is amazing here, and there are perfect little bits of his obsession with Rogue's skin which reminds me so much of the eroticism of Fingersmith it took away my breath.

I'm reading instead of studying, of course. Dinner soon, though, some time outside in the nice weather and the full moon, and then back to the books.

---

"Every Farthing of the Cost (Dingoes At My Baby Remix)"

Summary: Oz can't help but be reminded of Giles whenever Remus is around, so he takes the withdrawn Remus under his wing.

Oz, Remus, werewolves, magic, and background Remus/Sirius. I love every single thing about this story, especially Oz's voice, and the way he and Remus interact.

"Where the River Meets the Dawn (The Strobe Lights and the Disco Remix)"

Summary: The Slayers are relaxing at the beach, and the Serenity crew are in trouble - or it might be the other way around.

I love Caridad's voice here, and the way the story is different from the original but still captures the excitement and joy of it.

"Eleven Hours at the End of the World (The Memento Mori Remix)"

Summary: A Slayer fights her way through a post-apocalyptic wasteland full of zombies, picking up a traveling companion along the way.

Post-apocalyptic wasteland full of zombies. Need I say more?

"Hold On Loosely (The Southern Rock Remix)"

Summary: "I'll be the best big brother ever, and you'll be the best little brother ever."

This story is so very, very much Dean Winchester I am amazed.

"By Any Other Name (The Fool's Paradise Remix)"

Summary: If ye should lead her in a fool's paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behaviour.

This is a fantastic exploration of what would grow from Mystique once she was no longer Mystique any more.

"Lucky Number Seven (By the Numbers Remix)"

Summary: The seven people Sirius Black has kissed, and the reason he hasn't had sex until the last one.

Remus and Sirius again, and the stories behind Sirius's kisses, and just a wonderful point of view.

I hope to have more recs later this week, but first I wanted to talk about the amazing, wonderful story someone wrote for me. "Twinkie Run (The Stars & Gartes Remix)" is a fantastic remix of my "on the road with disposable comestibles". The author's Hank and Bobby friendship is perfect, just absolutely what I wanted to see in the movieverse, but that's not the only good thing here. Kitty is a great character, her personality shines out of the story, and Emma is absolutely, without a doubt, awesome beyond the telling of it.

Thank you, anonymous remixer. Thank you so much!

Everyone else, you should read the story. The Hank voice is excellent, and the whole thing just fills me with a wonderful glee.

Why isn't it September yet? Not that September will bring any answers, but at least I can start with my plans.

/cryptic

When I received my XMM ficathon assignment, I squeed at work. I'm still thrilled about it, and have been outlining what might become a rather long, multi-part story. Excellent. I'll start writing it soon, maybe tomorrow.

Now for some links:

"Four Kisses, One (Almost) Truce" by [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl is a lovely little Starbuck/Sharon story. (Battlestar Galactica)

The Snowflake Method for writing a novel, only some of which works for me, but which is interesting and made me think about my own writing.

"Boys" by [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce is a nice Jean/Scott story set during the first movie, and has Jean's thoughts on Scott and Logan. (X-Men movieverse)
escritoireazul: (Default)
"Holy Night" by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool is a terrible, wonderful, painful story about Zoe, almost broken, and Mal, never knowing just the right thing to say. It's short, but so much is packed into each word it is absolutely unbelievable.

"The Likes of Which You Ain't Ever Seen" by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool is a cute, funny story in which Jayne gets arrested and Kaylee and River must ride to the rescue.

"Looking For Normal" by [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight is a sad, beautiful story about Scott Summers and his friendship with Reed Richards (of Fantastic Four fame) in the aftermath of X2.

"Stolen Waters" by [livejournal.com profile] fabu is a painful, wonderful short story about Elizabeth and Will after PotC:Dead Man's Chest, which incorporates that worry about what's to come very well.

"Her Daddy Was" by [livejournal.com profile] moony is a slow story filled with hurting set a long time after Brokeback Mountain and narrated by Alma Del Mar Junior. It's lovely.

Dude, I don't know how I missed this earlier in the month, but [livejournal.com profile] werewindle wrote a backup fic for my XMM ficathon request which hadn't been answered yet. She wrote Resolve for me, a pre-slash Peter-->Logan crush fic and it's adorable. You should go read, and be inspired to write more Piotr(Peter)/Logan, especially in the movie fandom or Ultimate X-Men, which is practically canon, come on.

Which reminds me, I need to keep a schedule going of things due.

My xmmficathon backup: A.S.A.P.
Yuletide: 21 December 2005
Keya's Marko/Sprite fic: 25 December 2005 (or sooner)
Sarah's Christmas fic: 25 December 2005 (or sooner)
Threesome ficathon backup: 01 January 2006

Plus all the non-deadline writing, and I think I've signed up for at least one more Christmas exchange which hasn't sent out assignments yet. Maybe the f/f one? Hmmm.

I'm gathering holiday music and will be making icons and maybe a mood theme here in the near future. I need to get back to cleaning tonight, get up early tomorrow morning to write, and then go tear apart an engine mid-morning/early afternoon.

I've added the next two she's posted. I still love the series and it keeps building in beautiful, beautiful layers.

[livejournal.com profile] kphoebe took a throw-away, sleepy desire for gratuitous sexy redhaired men and turned it into a believable, wonderful, breathtaking series dealing with Gambit/Bill, of course, but others as well. Many others. She's still writing on the series and I am awed and overwhelmed by the wonder of the fact she's writing them for me.

So really, please go read the stories and let her know what you think of them.

They are vaguely X-Men movieverse (around X3) and post-war Harry Potter, with some timeline tweaking to make things fit.

+ Sexy Redhead Convention, Bill Weasley/Gambit
+ Good Guys, Hermione Granger/Logan
+ Pack Mule, Bobby Drake
+ Little Sisters, Ron Weasley, Piotr
+ The More They Stay the Same, Draco Malfoy/Mystique

Encourage her, please. These are fabulous stories.

Also, if anyone else knows of any such crossovers, please point them out to me (or feel free to write some for me. What can I say, I'm greedy for stories.) because I think I want to write my own.

All right, I confess, I have two journals. (This is not the first time I've confessed, however.) One is fandom (this journal, obviously) and one is mostly real life with just a smidge of fandom thrown in. The other night I watched an episode of the X-Men cartoon (the older one) and noted how Gambit's red ponytail reminded me of Bill Weasley. I decided I liked the comparison and wanted someone to write me Gambit/Bill Weasley because of the sheer hotness of it all.

To my complete surprise, someone did! (Actually, I think at least two someones are writing it for me, but only one has posted any of them so I can link.)

Closer I'm Bound (the long distance remix): Four things that didn't happen to Scott Summers. Or so he pretends.

It's strange, to see the world through red. It's strange, to see the world after living it in the dark. And this, this story, these four things -- unbelievable. The final section is my favorite and just broke my heart.

Unspoken (Living in Rewind Remix): They were too late. The camp is abandoned; the mutants within it are dead. All that's left is burial duty.

Character death and romance and rotten luck. Beautiful word choice and a haunting, but truthful, scenario.

Two Measures in Three Quarter Time (Waltz, Cadenza Remix): There are things you never forget.

Oh my god. The descriptions throughout this story overwhelm and the characters (and their emotions) are so true, from the good reaction sto the bad. It's beautiful and painful and wonderful, all at once.

Tea Time in Genosha (The Negasonic Teenage Warhead Remix): Emma, Genosha, and relativity at quarter of three.

Really, not a lot to say beyond the author's summary. Emma's characterization sparks, the relativity is incorporated well, and the whole story ties together nicely.
