ETA: Between 2005 and 2018, I've written 69 stories for Yuletide. Oh yeah.

Yuletide's revving up for 2019 ([community profile] yuletide_admin), and I'm eager to hear if you'll be participating and, if so, what fandoms you're considering. I'm thinking:

Touchstone series by Andrea K. Höst: Portal sci-fi first person diary about an Australian teen who ends up walking through a portal onto a different planet which has been abandoned by its people due to monsters. When she's finally rescued from that planet, she ends up on a second planet crowded with people who fled the first planet and surrounded by fantastic technology and an ongoing war against the monsters. It's iddy and tropey and absolutely wonderful. Main trilogy, Gratuitous Epilogue all about romances and children (no, really, that's the title of the book), and a fourth novel from a different character's POV.

United States of Asgard series by Tessa Gratton: Norse gods are real and living among humanity. World building is interesting, though I have complaints about how indigenous peoples are treated, but the characters are my favorite part. Excellent human characters, and Fenris Wolf also appears as a teen girl named Glory. She is truly glorious.

Kisses & Curses: Mobile game about witches and romances and trying to save the world. Wonderful bisexual main character, great romance options, and one of the more satisfying stories I've experienced in a mobile game.

Confident - Demi Lovato: The music video, not the song itself, because I will never, ever, ever get enough of those women fighting each other and banding together and all the ways that world building can go.

Pushing Daisies: Adorable and charming murder mystery tv show ended far too soon with a protagonist who can bring things back to life and a cast of characters I adore. I'm really craving warm, sweet, chosen family case fic shenanigans, but if that's the only thing I want, period, I won't request it because that's not fair to a potential author. I want to give multiple prompts, any one of which I would be delighted to receive.

Agent Pendergast series by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child: Specifically focuses on Corrie Swanson (a teen in one of my favorite books who grows up to become an FBI agent) and Nora Kelly (a smart, brash anthropologist). Conveniently, a book about those two specifically just came out, which delighted me and made me want more stories about them.

Hobbs & Shaw: This would need an evidence post to separate it from the main Fast and the Furious series, which is ineligible, and I'm not sure such an argument would be all that successful since Luke and Deckard both appear in multiple Fast and Furious movies, but I am dying for Hattie Shaw and Samantha Hobbs fic, among a ton of other ideas.

Y'all, I have seen actual legal arguments about trademark violations from actual attorneys (though not IP attorneys) that weren't written and cited as well as [personal profile] synecdochic's post, goddamn.

they really should have known the one thing we know is how to bring receipts aka Trademark Law Lies and the Dudes Who Perpetuate Them.

If I had an active fannish Twitter or Tumblr, I would have added to my profile: 100% Absolutely Positively Not a Hugo Award Winner. But I don't, so I shan't.

The Fanlore write-up of the controversy.

This is really putting me off the Hugos and Worldcon. Feels like another cultural clash in SFF, and I am really fucking tired of them. They're necessary and good changes can come out of them, but so tired.

Dear Shipoween Creator,

It’s my favorite time of year: horror and Halloween and fall weather and this year I’m excited to add Shipoween.

Below, I provide Do Not Wants and general likes, then go into why I like specific fandoms and characters and provide some prompts. If there is a discrepancy between the DNWs and general likes and the fandom-specific information, go with the fandom-specific information. Mixing and matching fandoms and prompts more than welcome.

My absolute favorite things: werewolves, crossovers and alternate universes, and monsters and magic.

I requested fic and spooky, seasonal, and no theme. I know this is a Trick or Treat thing and not a Shipoween thing, but I find it useful and want to include a similar note here: You may ignore my art/fic preferences for extra gifts.

My AO3 name is also escritoireazul.

Huh, apparently I haven't posted about it at all this year, but 2019 marks the 20th year since I first started posting fic online. I can't believe it's been so long, but at the same time, it feels like I should have written so much more. I thought I'd do some sort of celebration when I hit 20 years, but this year has been such an explosion of family and work issues that I haven't even thought about it until just now. Ah well.

Finding online fandom in the late 90s was one of the best things I ever did, and I will remain grateful for it until my dying day.

Dear Trick or Treat Creator,

It’s my favorite time of year: horror and Halloween and fall weather and Trick or Treat.

Below, I provide Do Not Wants and general likes, then go into why I like specific fandoms and characters and provide some prompts. If there is a discrepancy between the DNWs and general likes and the fandom-specific information, go with the fandom-specific information. Mixing and matching fandoms and prompts more than welcome, as is making any prompt a trick or a treat.

My absolute favorite things: werewolves, crossovers and alternate universes, and monsters and magic.

I requested fic and tricks and treats. For the freeform tags: I am interested in extra gifts for the community challenge that don’t fit my requests. You may ignore my art/fic preferences for extra gifts.

I'm not doing very well; September is a rough money in my family, and I've been struggling with the bipolar all year anyway. However, Trick or Treat sign-ups start soon, and I can't wait. I'm working out what I want to request and what prompts I want to leave for them, which made me think I'd love to hear from y'all about things you like in stories.

In particular, I'd love to know your favorite alternate universes, fusions, and tropes.

Some of mine, to start us off: werewolf AUs, monster hunting AUs, enemies to friends (to lovers), friends to lovers, IN SPACE AUs, Everyone is a Slayer Now BTVS fusions.

What are yours?

[community profile] trickortreatex is back this year, and I think you should join me in the fun. Info here. It's a fic exchange, has a low minimum word count, does not require horror or Halloween themed anything but I've gotten some amazing fic for horror canons, has a treat-heavy culture, and does fic and art. It's great fun!

I have no idea what I'm nominating yet. Nominations open Sep 1, so I should probably figure that out sometime soon.

As always, still taking questions, too: Ask Me Anything.

[personal profile] marginaliana asked: What's your favorite physical, non-living object? So, no pets or people, but it could be anything else out there in the world.

Damn, pulling no punches here. I'm struggling with this one. Saying, for example, books feels like cheating not only because that is clearly more than one physical object but also because, in their own way, they're kind of alive. They're full of characters and worlds and one of the big reasons I read is to fall into that for awhile. Physical copies of movies, video games, tv shows -- the same. Similarly, it feels like cheating to say the ocean, mostly because it really feels like a living thing. Not just the lifeforms within it (GIANT OCTOPUS, COME BE MY FRIEND), but the ocean itself, the movement and the danger and the beauty.

Other things fall the same way: My studio? Not just one thing but the combination of everything it in, including the art I've created, which lives in its own way, and the instruments and recording devices are all tied to the nontangible things I make with them, that's what makes them important. My octopus collection or my Stitch collection or my carefully curated collection of Funko Pops? I can't choose just one. Sex toys come and sex toys go. Same with clothes.

But then I realized duh, my favorite physical, non-living object is always the vehicle I'm currently driving. Everything else is wonderful, I love the majority of things I own, but my vehicle is the thing I would miss most if I had to give it up.

I love to drive. I love it. I grew up on the road with my dad each summer when he was a long-haul truck driver. We lived out on a farm up until I was around 10, and so we drove any time we needed to go to a bookstore or a church or the optometrist or to visit family, etc. I got my license the second I could, I'd rather road trip than travel any other way. The thing I do to calm down from heartbreak or rage or fear, the thing I do to work out plot points and come up with new stories and figure out wording, the thing I do to layout a strong argument for work projects, the thing I do to explore and talk to people and spend time with myself and hang out with the dog and and and and: I drive hard, windows down and music up.

I love to drive into sunrise and into sunset even as the light burns my eyes. I love crosscountry in the darkness, just me and truckers on the highway, the stars bright overhead between towns. I love driving down state highways with cornfields green and golden and terrifying on either side. I love driving down narrow gravel roads made even tighter by the tree branches stretched out overhead, the bushes scraping the sides of the car.

I love to ride my motorcycle on the curviest roads, leaning into it. I love hot days when riding through tree shadows is noticeably cooler for that glorious moment. I love wind against my cheeks and drying my lips, the heat of the pipes nearly too much against my legs, the weight of the bike beneath me. I love riding in a pack, all those engines loud. I love riding alone, making my own way through the world.

It is freedom and emotional regulation and hope and more.

So that's it: My favorite physical, non-living object is whatever vehicle I drive. Currently, that's a Dodge Charger. (My beloved bike needs serious work, so it's not on the road this summer.) I've loved every vehicle I've ever owned even though some were better than others, and enjoyed pretty much every borrowed or rental car I've ever used, but I love the Charger most of all.

[tumblr.com profile] natasharomanoffburnbook, one of my ride or dies, is raising funds to help a beloved family member get out of a terrible marriage. She explains more of the details here.

The Faith Freedom Fund: Helping a good woman and her children get away from a bad situation. This Tumblr link has fundraising offers from people, e.g., icons, drabbles, art, etc. for donations.

Here is the GoFundMe link for direct donations.

Here is my addition: If you make a donation and send a copy of the receipt (personal details redacted) to escritoireazul@gmail.com along with some details about what you want, I will write you something of at least 500 words. Fic? Snarky recap? Lyrical poem? Reviews of your favorite horror movies? I'm game. (There are some things I may not be able to do, but I will work with you on that.)

You can find my fic on Archive of Our Own. Snarky recaps at Devil's Elbow (Point Horror and other 80s and 90s teen genre fiction) and Sweet Valley Online (Sweet Valley, starting with Twins). Depending on how you combine a couple, I've written in 76 fandoms (you can find the list on my profile), and I have frequently picked up fandoms specifically to write someone a story.

Pieces will be done within the next 12 months, and I hope sooner, but that depends on how many requests come in. Comments are screened on this post in case people want to say something privately, so let me know if you comment and it can be made public. Default will be not to make anything public.

Fandom and fandom people have helped me in so many ways over the years. I hope to give a little of it back here.

Ask Me Anything post here.

[personal profile] slashmarks asked: How do you find and choose the books you read?

So many ways. Earlier this year, I finally started a spreadsheet that tracks what book was recommended, where it was recommended, who recommended it, and what they said about it. Outside of that, I have GoodReads books marked want to read, multiple wishlists on bookstore sites, scraps of paper shoved into planners, notebooks with lists, note files on my phone, private posts on Livejournal and Dreamwidth with lists, and so many other ways. The spreadsheet is helping me keep them in one place, sort of.

(I do this with other media, too.)

These books mostly come from:

+ friends telling me directly to read something
+ people on my reading lists posting about what they're reading and me being interested
+ books appearing on Smart Bitches, Trashy Books sales lists
+ seeing a book on social media somewhere (including anon memes)
+ themed reading lists
+ books people read in school that I never read
+ YouTube
+ wandering a bookstore or library (including online)
+ freebies

I also have certain books that come from other places: authors I love, my friends' books, books for projects (e.g., 80s and 90s nostalgic fiction), books given to me for review, things like that.

How do I choose what to read next? I wish I had a process! There's always so much to read and so little time.

(Things What I Read While Traveling Last Week: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, The Game You Played by Anni Taylor, Winter Study by Nevada Barr, Rolling in the Deep and Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, Dark Alchemy by Laura Bickle, and The Lost Sun by Tessa Gratton.)

Yes, I am still answering these, just very slowly. (Still taking questions, too! Ask Me Anything)

[personal profile] st_aurafina asked: I have often wondered where your username is from? Is there an escritoire involved?

More or less, actually! Lo these many years ago, my main desk with a glass and metal piece that I adored. (I don't have a desk now except at work. Instead, I have a giant table for art and I write on a tv stand.) The only problem with it was the lack of storage, so I kept finding old pieces with tiny little drawers and shelves and things and building them around the desk until it was a corner of modern glass and metal and old-fashioned everything else. It was great.

The glass had a bit of a blue tint and blue is my favorite color, but escritoireblue didn't sound right.

I miss writing at a blue desk. Someday, perhaps I will go back.

Anyway, I had slowly been splitting my fannish work off into its own space at the time and decided it needed a consistent username of its own. Since all the work I did for it was created at my desk and I am shit at naming things, including (especially) myself, this is what I ended up with. I wouldn't change it for the world at this point.

I'm not really around at the moment, but I wanted to take a moment to appreciate sports fandom, which I don't talk about here a ton.

MY BLUES ARE GOING TO THE GODDAMN STANLEY CUP FINAL I AM SCREAMING.

We haven't been in the Stanley Cup final since 1970. SINCE 1970. FORTY-NINE FUCKING YEARS. I WASN'T EVEN ALIVE THEN. MY WHOLE LIFE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT.

Play "Gloria" indeed.

I love a good underdog story, and it's even better when it's my goddamn team.

For long-suffering Blues fans and players, it's different this time

I'm traveling for the next bit, but I will damn sure find a sports bar for the three games that'll happen while I'm gone. At the very least, an online broadcast, even if I have to pay exorbitant money for wifi access.

Saw it, not sure I'll have a post for it until I get to see it again, and I haven't settled on whether I should watch it again in the theater now or wait until I finish my very slow marathon and watch it in its appropriate place at the end.

Friend of mine did the full series marathon in the cinema leading up to Endgame. His posting about it made my week and brought a whole bunch of us together who haven't talked much since grad school, so that was fun, everyone bonding over this shared experience that we were actually living vicariously in the first place!

J's brother, J2, would have loved the hell out of this movie. He died in 2013, shortly after Thor: The Dark World, and there have been a ton of movies he would have loved that have made me sad to think about (Winter Soldier! Ragnarok! Black Panther! Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp! Probably Ultron, too, because of the different things he liked that I didn't), but he would have adored Endgame, and I have an ache in my heart over the fact that I never got to share this with him. I rarely talk to J about it because he hasn't really processed J2's death (or my mom's death the year before), but when we talked briefly after I got home, before I went to do some work until midnight and he went to sleep, the first thing I told him was how much J2 would have loved it.

He would have, and I'm sad that he missed all the ways this universe expanded.

I really enjoyed Endgame, am satisfied with how this phase ended, and look forward to the future.

Awhile back I said J's family and my family take turns being the most stressful. 2018 was definitely the year for his family, but my family took the torch back for 2019. We've had some massive illnesses, death in the extended family, pets having to be put down (not my beloved Cuddle Monster), and lots and lots of other losses. We're all exhausted, and it's only April. (Also: how the hell is it April, it feels like it should still be January?!) But Sister has a big trip in May, and I have a big trip shortly after with Dad and J, and life continues.

Previously in this long time marathon: I apparently did not write about rewatching Captain America, Agent Carter, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2.

I am sick right now, sore throat and exhaustion and all, so what better time than to rewatch Thor? I had zero interest in the movie until I saw a gif set on Tumblr that included Sif and then I was 100% into giving it a try.

And then I fell in love with it.

Thor )

The Thor trilogy is one of my favorite parts of the MCU, mostly because Thor is one of my favorite characters and I love the science fiction meets fantasy weight of them. Overall, not as good as the Iron Man trilogy, but Thor as a whole has a stronger character arc across the MCU. This is by far one of the most beautiful movies of the MCU, too.
escritoireazul: (pitch black strength)
I just realized I should have held off on watching Iron Man until this released, but oh well! I saw it last night and I want to see it again sometime soon, so I doubt there will be any in-depth comments below, but non-spoilery response: There are plenty of things to criticize, but I loved it.
