Fandom: Thor

Previously in this long time marathon: I apparently did not write about rewatching Captain America, Agent Carter, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2.
I am sick right now, sore throat and exhaustion and all, so what better time than to rewatch Thor? I had zero interest in the movie until I saw a gif set on Tumblr that included Sif and then I was 100% into giving it a try.
And then I fell in love with it.
Jane + Science = TRUE LOVE FOREVER
God, Asgard is just so fucking beautiful in this movie.
Odin, the most unreliable of unreliable narrators or what? I do love this introduction to the stories he tells about the universe and Asgard saving humanity, Asgard the golden world, Asgard the heroes. Especially in light of Ragnarok, it's a gorgeous example of the way colonizers try to control how history is told.
No, really, Asgard, breathtakingly beautiful. I get chills every single time with the stars and space and the beauty of it all.
It was Asgard and its warriors that brought peace to the universe.
Gorgeous and horrifying. As is "A wise king seeks out war but he must always be ready for it." GODDAMN ODIN.
Speaking of things being breathtaking, goddamn, Thor is just so pretty.
AND SIF. SIF I LOVE YOU SO. YOU HAVE MY HEART.
Watching this after Ragnarok and looking at how Odin watches Thor in all his confidence and cockiness come down to the throne, I wonder how much of Hela he sees in Thor's attitude. And, of course, Loki is there in green and black and filled with need to prove himself, even more like Hela in so many ways. Calling Thor his firstborn and the break on that; I have my doubts about how much Hela was in their head at all on creating this movie, but no matter, there's some gorgeous detail to it on this rewatch.
"I proclaim you ... frost giants."
Yeah, pretty sure Thor isn't the son you're proclaiming a frost giant.
UGH the Destroyer is so fucking creepy.
Oh my god, the shape of Odin's cloak across his shoulders his fucking hilarious, as is comparing Odin, Thor, and Loki's cloak span. I laughed.
Thor's temper tantrum with the feast table is way too relatable. Shit.
And Loki easing his way to Thor's side, whispering stories and encouragement in his own twisting way. God of lies, indeed.
I am not a Loki fan, in part because I watched this already knowing what he was doing in Avengers, but if I separate from that, I can be far more sympathetic to him here.
"I did." SIF I LOVE YOU.
GOD THIS MOVIE IS SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. The space side of the MCU makes my heart clench every time, it is so glorious.
HEIMDAL I LOVE YOU. His control and his confidence and his anger over how the frost giants slipped his watch and how he allows this thing to happen that probably shouldn't in part because of his need to know and in part, maybe, because of what he sees but cannot, will not say.
NO REALLY HOW SO BEAUTIFUL, MOVIE?
T: I have no plans to die today. Cocky as shit.
H: None do. Flat and plain and perfect. And interesting to look at thinking forward to what we learn in Ragnarok. Heimdal would have seen so many warriors fall, Asgardian and not, so many innocents trampled in Asgards horrifying reign.
Your father is a murderer and a thief.
I mean, you could tell them what all Odin stole, but sure, why not.
Loki, always whispering whispering whispering into Thor's ear. Twisted and heavy and layered.
God, that moment where Loki sees his skin change and then kills the frost giant touching him. I hate secret adoption stories, but this one is actually kind of interesting.
Thor, so cocky that he would let his friends fall because he cannot fathom losing. He cannot fathom the world not working in exactly the way he wants. Thor, son of Odin, heir to Asgard, the golden god of a golden world. A world filled with secrets (even here), a world built on destroying and controlling other worlds.
I do love the way the Thor trilogy ties science fiction and epic fantasy together. Science is magic, aliens are gods and monsters. It's beautifully done.
Every time I see Sleipnir I can't help but laugh over the idea of a Loki horse baby in the MCU. (I know, I know, but it still makes me laugh.)
Odin talking about a warrior's patience and Thor being vain and greedy cracks me the fuck up. One could argue that Odin learned from what he did before, especially in banishing Thor when he betrayed Odin's orders. Banishing his children for not listening to him, for wanting too much of war and power and too little of whatever it is Odin decides he wants, is an Odin parenthood trait.
I still think this movie would have been better if someone else was able to be worthy of the hammer. Like, say, Jane.
Anyway, I do now wonder if Odin banished Thor like this, to learn and regain his power, because he didn't banish Hela soon enough, didn't try to rein her in until far too late.
Jane being obsessed with science and waving off Thor's potential injuries and then wanting to stay with the science no matter what, Darcy tasing him, it's great. I love them. And Darcy's smugness over tasering him is the best. Any time I say some variation on "yes I did," in my head at least I am as smug and adorable as that.
Cowboys trying to tug Mjolnir out of the ground is entertaining as fuck always.
Jane's going to look all over New Mexico for Thor and then hits him AGAIN. I love her.
Holy hell, Thor is a pretty, pretty man.
What am I?
You're my son.
What more than that?
That is a beautifully paced exchange.
Loki thinking himself a monster now that he knows the truth, Loki lashing out even as Odin falls before him, so in need of the Odin sleep -- I probably should be more sympathetic toward Loki, considering he ticks that whole monster within thing I normally love, but no, he still doesn't.
Darcy, asking the important questions about Thor's hunger.
Jane thanking Thor for kissing her hand is awkward and adorable and hilarious, as is Selvig bowing and Darcy curtsying. You are all ridiculous and I would watch a billion more stories about awkward sciencing.
Fucking Coulson, god, I do not understand why people love you so. God, the government coming in and taking stuff just because they can and claiming to be the good guys, what the fuck. This is such shit.
Selvig knew Banner, of course he did. So worried about them disappearing Jane too. UGH MY HEART. Science trying to push on in the face of government control, women in science, so much of this side of the story is painful and hard and wonderful.
Loki on the throne, golden crown from his helmet, looking so much like Hela. Of those who remember her, how must this look to them.
So, question, if in Thor Odin has needed the Odin sleep for so long, then why is he dying in Ragnarok? Why doesn't he take the sleep in Dark World when Loki pulls off the great switch? Did he take it in Dark World and it's been so long since I saw it that I've forgotten.
Thor knowing it's going to storm and giving Jane his coat is adorable.
I watched this the first time with J's brother, J2, and he was so delighted with my response to this section, especially when Hawkeye grabs the bow instead of the gun. Especially because I flat out cheered for Hawkeye and J2 was so pleased when I recognized him.
Also, this is another beautifully done scene, Thor tearing through people even without his normal power, the rain and the mud, and that moment of pure defeat when he can't lift Mjolnir.
(Hawkeye swinging as he gets to the high point makes me want a Jurassic Park crossover.)
I love Hawkeye's snark when it comes to Thor tearing his way through everyone, too. And yes, Thor in the rain and mud deserves to be recognized again, because goddamn, pretty.
Jesus, those arms as he tries to lift the hammer. I am DEAD.
And of course Heimdal is watching, always.
God, Thor in that white (ish) room, broken and silent, actually wounded but torn down inside more than anything else, this scene is beautiful, too. (This whole movie.)
AND THEN LOKI. In a horror movie jump scare scene, which nicely reflects (heh) how monstrous he has become, not because he was a monster inside but because of the choices he's making and the lies he's telling.
And god, Thor's face when he asks, so broken, if he can come home. UGH MY HEART MY HEART MY HEART. Then his apology and thanking Loki for telling him I CANNOT EVEN WITH THESE EMOTIONS. Okay, knowing what Loki's doing and has done set against Thor's broken emotions there and Loki's anger over not being able to lift Mjolnir versus Thor's horrified sadness, no wonder I have little sympathy for Loki.
Thor grabbing Jane's book because it is one little thing he can bring back to her after he promised her everything -- GOD MY HEART.
Thor's character arc is one of my favorites across all of the MCU. Even more than Tony's, no matter how much I love Tony's in his own trilogy, because so many of the later movies shit all over some of the things I adore about Tony's arc. Thor, from here all the way to Infinity War, has a strong through-line of becoming better, setting aside pride and cockiness to become something more.
Heimdal is also glorious throughout the movies and I love that we get to see more and more of him. God, they'd better bring him back with more of the Asgardians.
I love Jane's awkwardness over never having guests and then Jane showing him her spot on the roof where she goes when she needs time and space to think and science and survive. And their bonding here, sweet and warm, and the things he tells her, ugh, my heart, I have so many feelings over them and Jane's love of science and all the possibilities he holds for her, the knowledge he has that she can use and build on and create such wonderful things. UGH HEART.
Heimdal might be watching.
Heimdal demands your presence.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Okay, I love this exchange, Heimdal setting forth all the things they are doing wrong and then turning his back to them so the bridge will open for them, ugh heart MY HEART. Yes, I know I have mostly wordless feelings over this movie. I am flailing over it no matter how many times I see it.
Thor and Jane cooking together OH MY GOD LOOK AT HIM SERVING OTHERS AND HELPING AND BEING HUMBLE AND GIVING AND UGH MY HEAAAAAAAAAAAART.
SIF AND THE WARRIORS THREE. And their joy over finding Thor! And Selvig, Jane, and Darcy's shock over them just appearing. MY HEART. I am so filled with delight over them.
And then the hard shock as they realize Loki lied to him, and he realizes just how far Loki has gone with this.
AND LOKI FREEZING HEIMDAL WHAT THE FUCK. Though I do love how this sets up Heimdal breaking it later.
I love how the first thing SHIELD asks is if the Destroyer is one of Stark's, because of course that's their first thought and of course Stark tells them nothing, because he will always play that close to the chest.
Thor, Jane, Selvig, and Darcy rushing to empty the town while Sif and the Warriors Three take on the Destroyer is another of my favorite parts of this movie, especially that glorious moment where Sif comes leaping off the roof to spear it through its throat. That little smirk is perfect, and even moreso when it falls away when the Destroyer starts to twist.
I will die a warrior's death. Stories will be told of this day.
Live and tell them yourself.
UGH MY HEART
And Thor reassuring his friends that he has a plan, which he does, but it is a terrible wonderful plan of sacrifice. He walks, so calm, in front of the Destroyer, at peace in who he is and what he must do. UGH THOR APOLOGIZING TO LOKI AND FILLED WITH LOVE AND PROTECTION AND WANTING JUST PEACE FOR THE INNOCENT MY HEART MY HEART MY HEART.
And then that casual backhand that so easily would kill Thor in this way.
I still think Mjolnir should have come for Jane in this moment, in all the things she's taught him and shown him how to find, in her love for science and that great expanse of wonder in her. (Also an I Am No Man moment with that if he should be worthy bullshit, ODIN.)
But that is not the story we were given, and I like this one, too, though not as much. I do get chills over the lightning and Thor's triumphant rise.
Thor kissing Jane's hand again! Jane kissing him, because she knows what she wants and she goes for it. Jane, Darcy, and Selvig watching the bifrost in awe.
Loki's whole your death came by the son of Odin is a great moment that has wonderful echoes all the way to Infinity War.
Loki, perhaps you should think about why you hate Odin for lying to you and not Frigga. (Who is fierce as fuck, and I wish we got more of Frigga the Warrior Queen. Though, the fact that women are not warriors in this version of Asgard must, in-universe, have ties to Hela's rise and war and banishment and the fall of the Valkyries.)
Loki and his whole I never wanted the throne, I only wanted to be your equal should really go hang out with Nebula awhile.
Thor destroying the bridge to save the frost giants would be waaaaaaay more powerful if I didn't know (even the first time I saw this) that he'd show up in Avengers real damn soon.
God, in that moment where Loki so much wants Odin's approval and when he doesn't get it letting go and falling away, turning to face into the unknown he falls into, that's gorgeous.
Jane in the sunset looking up at where the bifrost has disappeared, ugh my heart my heart my heart. It's not just Thor, it's all that science, all that knowledge lost.
Goddamn, I know I've said it a bunch, but this movie is gorgeous.
UGH THOR MOURNS FOR HIS BROTHER AND MISSES JANE.
Oh, Thor, Odin is neither a wise king nor a good father, but the fact that you believe it of him is such a moment for your character growth. And that moment where he says he just wants Odin to be proud and Odin is proud, UGH MY HEART.
Heimdal at the edge of the bridge, watching, always. MY HEART MY HEART MY HEART.
AND JANE AND HER SCIENCE AND DARCY STILL AROUND AND JANE AND SCIENCE DID I MENTION THAT UGH I HAVE CHILLS.
SO SO SO BEAUTIFUL. SO BEAUTIFUL. One of the rare times I watched the credits for the beauty behind them, because god, so. fucking. beautiful.
(Even if a little first person swoopy. Not enough to trigger my vertigo, thank god.)
And that stinger! Nice little setup for Avengers.
The Thor trilogy is one of my favorite parts of the MCU, mostly because Thor is one of my favorite characters and I love the science fiction meets fantasy weight of them. Overall, not as good as the Iron Man trilogy, but Thor as a whole has a stronger character arc across the MCU. This is by far one of the most beautiful movies of the MCU, too.
I am sick right now, sore throat and exhaustion and all, so what better time than to rewatch Thor? I had zero interest in the movie until I saw a gif set on Tumblr that included Sif and then I was 100% into giving it a try.

However, one can take Coulson on a journey that parallels Odin's on a mortal scale...

I do love that moment. So tiny yet so significant.
I do love the way the Thor trilogy ties science fiction and epic fantasy together. Science is magic, aliens are gods and monsters.
YES. I love how it looks like magic, but Jane is quickly putting together how it's just really advanced science.
