escritoireazul: (lost boys star is lost)

I'm working my way chronologically through the MCU (some things are a rewatch, some for the first time), and today I finished the last two episodes of Agent Carter, the Agent Carter short at the end of Iron Man 3, and Iron Man. I have some thoughts. Spoilers for both things, and for Avengers: Civil War.

Agent Carter: Oh my god, I'd seen pieces of both seasons, and I had forgotten how well season two builds to that terrible end. WTF how dare they cancel it at that point. How very dare.

I really love how Carter, Sousa, and Thompson end up working through their antagonism and find ways to work together, even while they still keep secrets and don't trust each other and all their histories still clash. And I hardcore ship them. HARDCORE.

I've been debating signing up for Chocolate Box, and Carter/Sousa/Thompson are one of the pairing options. I'm even more tempted, now, though I generally don't write fic except for ToT and Yuletide. I love the sharpness of their banter and their fighting, and I am desperate to see more of the three of them together.

Even more than that, though, I'm desperate to see the three of them solve things that were left hanging: the key. Who shot Thompson. How they get all the way to S.H.I.E.L.D. What other ridiculous adventures they get up to with Stark. More with Dottie Underwood and the Red Room and all those trained girls who became dangerous women. The short was really kind of terrible after the fun of the two seasons and seeing how Peggy worked, though Peggy kicked so much ass in both the show and the short that I was thrilled.

I also really love Jarvis/Ana/Carter, and Carter and Jarvis working together and the complicated friendship they built, and how much Ana and Jarvis love each other, and how Ana takes Carter into her heart and her home so easily.

It was a terribly white show and it could have done a lot better, but oh, pieces of it gave me so many feelings.

Iron Man: SPEAKING OF FEELINGS.

It's been a long time since I watched Iron Man, and I'd forgotten how much I adore Tony Stark. His character growth in this movie and across the entire trilogy makes my heart warm. I love how much emotion he carries, and how he is fighting so hard to separate himself from the legacy of his father and the company while still trying to make it better. To make everything better. The company. The world. Himself.

And that ENDING. IT CONTINUES TO BE EVERYTHING. His announcement. The way it cuts off after that and into the perfect credit music. How Christine sits smug and knowing, because she has Stark's number now, she knows just how to get under his skin and get him to give her information. She's a damn good investigator, sometimes.

Tony and Pepper! I love them so, so much. They're the only person the other one has! He asks her to literally reach into his body, and she fucking does! Tony Stark has a heart and Pepper has proof. Pepper is amazing. She keeps going headlong into danger to help him, and not because she's hot-headed and throwing herself into things like Tony is; she knows exactly what she's doing and how dangerous it is, and she does it anyway, because it is the right thing to do. Because Tony believes it is the right thing to do.

RHODEY. I'm sad they recast Rhodey, even though I like both versions, because there are such great little moments here that really play up the chemistry between them. Their snark back and forth. Him clutching at Tony when Tony is found again. The way he comes running the moment Pepper suggests Tony is in danger. UGH HEART.

And NEXT TIME. JAMES FUCKING RHODES IN THE SUIT YES PLEASE IMMEDIATELY.

Rewatching this also made me reconsider my doubts over Tony in Civil War. I still stand by my belief that the Stark we see across this trilogy and in the first Avengers movie (and even somewhat in Age of Ultron) would not trust government oversight for a hot second, especially when it included General Ross. (That whole not handing over his tech, for one thing among many.) HOWEVER, Tony makes a point in this that a huge problem with SI is that it's operating without oversight. And in light of his PTSD following Avengers and then the fallout from Ultron, I can see his obsession with oversight -- including oversight on him -- leading him into pushing for something to keep the Avengers -- and him -- in check.

Like I said, though, I don't believe for a second that he'd go about it the way he did in Civil War, but I have come around some on his desire for oversight, for someone to make sure the right things are being done.

Came out of this with my existing ships solidified hardcore: Tony/Pepper, Tony/Pepper/Rhodey, Tony+building things in a sleeveless shirt.

Tony's interaction with his robots. With Pepper. With Rhodey. With his suits and his technology and JARVIS and his own emotions haunting him.

I love this movie, and I can see why it helped launch the whole damn universe.

AND THAT STINGER. FURY I LOVE YOU FURY. And your talk about superheroes and the big wide world. And this on top of what we've seen of Captain Marvel, ugh, everything keeps coming around and it is wonderful.

I've been pretty negative about a lot of the MCU, particularly in phase 2, but this rewatch is reminding me that I did love it, once, and there are huge parts that I still love.

HOW FUCKING DARE! Jack is shot?!? Altho OF COURSE they immediately find him and he is fine. JUST FINE. And they have their happy threesome, with Jack bitching about being stuck in bed or on crutches or whatever and Daniel humouring him.

Also, Peggy/Ana/Jarvis YESS. I loved Peggy/Jarvis so much in S1 I didn't want Mrs Jarvis, but then Ana was so fucking awesome. (I might also ship Howard/Peggy/Jarvis. Maybe. And Howard/Peggy/Steve....)

OMG DO IT.

Tony Stark as he stood in the MCU got sacrificed on the altar of "we need Civil War to happen at least sort of like it did in the comics," which is just. So frustrating. Then don't call it Civil War! Or come up with a better pretext for a split between Captain America and Iron Man!

Hear hear, here here. (TBH, when I watched CA:TWS I thought that would free us from Civil War. Nope, no such luck.)

I would have liked them to have worked harder if they had to do That, to frame their arguments. Because Tony is so being Played(tm), from someone getting The Fallen's Mom 'backstage' at MIT, to the whole existence of that videofile.

For there to be a split, there has to be Drift Simpatico which MCU never Showed.
