Okay, here we go. I know a lot of people are really feeling happy about this episode and do not want to be brought down. You should probably not read this, then. There's some positive, but quite a bit of negative, too.

Spoilers )

I am actually ridiculously glad for a hiatus. UGH.

One thing about Pretty Little Liars, though! That this made me think about, because I watched PLL last night.

(1) Exhaustion!brain so much that right before I woke up for work, I dreamed I hooked up with Sam at a party. Yeah, of all the Glee hook-up dreams I could have, Sam is my first? Really, brain? REALLY?

Pretty good kisser, though. And actually, after watching the episode, I'd hit that.

I have already paused the show because I am grimacing SO FREAKING HARD. I am one minute and twenty-two seconds into it. BAD SIGN.

Spoilers for Sexy )

OKAY WELL, I feel vaguely dizzy after that episode. Not because I am drunk, but because I whiplashed back and forth between emotions so much. There was a lot (NO, A LOT) (NO, A LOT) that I hated, but there were a couple scenes that just absolutely blew me away with the awesome.

So, uh, if you saw trailers for Splice and thought, as I did, that it looks like a sci-fi/horror movie -- cheesy, maybe slightly scary at moments, lots of mayhem and genetically engineered monsters, basically a fun movie night movie -- you may want to read this detailed, potentially triggery, and spoilery review/critique. (Link from [livejournal.com profile] apocalypsos here.)

I have never been so happy to be spoiled for something in my life, because if I'd watched Splice based on the trailers and ended up with what that review says, my rage explosion would have been massive.

I may actually still watch it, now that I've been warned, but I'm not sure I want to deal with some of the scenes.

[profile] rawles posted this: Along this same vein, deciding that you can defeat the misogyny of the source material/relationships in the source material by removing the women and replacing them with/focusing entirely dudes similarly reeks of bullshit. Because obviously the feminist way to deal with a misogynistic narrative is not to balance out relationships or illuminate and explore the female characters, but to ignore them! Riiiight.

The erasure of female characters from a narrative is never feminist. Period. The end.

I'm surprised it took me this long to figure out why I am so uninterested in Castiel, but it is this: there is no good reason for him to be a white man and I am tired of stories about white men and their pain and drama or whatever. This is the stupidest realization ever, too, because duh.

Yes, it's that time again. I am trying to watch Supernatural. I am doing a bunch of other stuff, too, writing and cooking and cleaning (maybe this is why I'm such a crap cook, I don't focus enough on it), so maybe I can find a balance between loving the potential of the show and hating the execution.

Maybe.

It's a Terrible Life )

On the whole, an enjoyable episode.

I think I've probably heard too much about this episode to come at it clean.

The Monster at the End of this Book )

Much, much less enjoyable.

Jump the Shark )

Mostly enjoyable, if frustrating at moments.

I think that might be all the Supernatural I can handle in a row.

On the other hand, my classic rock music station is doing a Blue Oyster Cult marathon and just started playing "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" which is a song I ADORE. Long before Supernatural used it, too.

Except for some of the songs (and I do mean only some of them), I'm straining to find anything likeable about this show. The ableism is really, really bad (from grabbing the wheelchair to not including the wheelchair in the dances in any real way to all the ableist language). None of the characters of color, especially the girls, get much time at all. Just about everyone is an asshole. Evil cheerleaders.

I know people love this show. They love it. I'm trying to find the good stuff, I am, but the stuff that angers me overshadows everything else, I guess.

And Mercedes. Oh, Mercedes.

spoilers for Acafellows )

I finally figured out a way to finish watching the last season of Supernatural, which was to multitask like crazy during the Castiel scenes. I want to get to this season. Maybe my anger at season three has finally faded enough to enjoy it again. (That's really a huge part of why I don't like season four, I think, because season three made me so mad with the misogyny and the racism. Plus I find Castiel boring. So maybe I can get to season five. Maybe.)

I'm going to figure out dinner now, though I've moved on to "Preggers".

Oh, wait, one more thing.

Preggers )

ETA: No, wait, I'm back.

More Preggers Rage )

ETA: Finally, something I actually really loved.

It's October! October is my favorite month of the year! Though it's not really got off to a fabulous start, I am doing what I normally do to celebrate it and that is to devour all the cheesy horror movies/books/shows and Halloween episodes of my favorite tv programs that I can.

Tonight's offering is Dying Breed about four hikers' quest for a rare tiger in the forests of Tasmania. So far it has all sorts of thing I love: hikers experiencing horror, tigers which may be more than they seem, friends and strangers headed into the wilderness together, and gorgeous accents.

(Because I like to multitask, while watching and making reaction notes, I'm also reading The Blooding by Patricia Windsor, a werewolf novel for teens.)

Spoilers. )

Basically I enjoyed this a lot better than Wolf Creek but only because it was much less torture porn. The first half of the movie is a lot of fun, because quite a bit of it is the characters interacting against a gorgeous background, but the ending sucked. Rogue was better.

Is Trick or Treat a werewolf movie? I didn't think it was, but the advertisement for it on DVD made it look like one.

Background: I didn't watch Sons of Anarchy last season until it was already over. When I first heard about it, I was intrigued by the bikes, but thought it would be just another negative portrayal of motorcycles with a ton of misogyny on the side. When I was home for winter break last year, J. made me watch it. We ended up marathoning the entire first season in just a few days. I probably would have done it all in one day, but J. made me drag it out so we could enjoy it longer. (J. also made me watch October Road. He's generally pretty awesome at introducing me to new things.) I've since watched season one many times and have been more excited about season two starting than anything else I plan to watch this year.

My original favorite character is Jax's dead dad, speaking to Jax (and the audience) through his book. My second favorite characters are Opie and Donna. If you've watched the show, you can see why the end of season one left me shaken and needing more. I'm a biker myself and ride with a local group back home.

I definitely wish there were more female characters and more women riding bikes on their own. I love the women we have, but it's still not very balanced. I wish that race was handled better. Charming is an extraordinarily white town and basically any character of color is an antagonist. (I would say bad guy, but in some ways, technically everyone is a bad guy, while antagonist works better as the opposing force to the protagonist.)

So with all that said, I am now going to watch, and blog about, Sons of Anarchy 2.01 "Albification".

Spoilers )

So basically, Sutter can go to hell for writing this episode and I've got to decide if I want to dump another show for women-hating BULLSHIT.
