[livejournal.com profile] marenfic is hosting the Battlestar Galactica Frakkin' Ficlet Battle over in her journal. As I received my season two point five DVDs yesterday, I plan to watch them (at some point...I don't know when) and participate in this challenge. Yes, I know I swore I wouldn't write BSG fic, but the girl slash! Starbuck! Starbuck having the girl slash! The president! Older Adama! Cylons!

Okay, obviously I have been sucked deep into another fandom.

Tornado warning. Tornadoes touching down. Equinox. Mom's birthday. Working all weekend (main job today 8-5, CogCon 5-11, main job 8-12 tomorrow, CogCon 12-11, CogCon 8-6 on Sunday). Want to watch my new DVDs. (BSG and Supernatural!)

While working on my A-Z Challenge stories for [livejournal.com profile] femslash100, I kind of went over the drabble limit, by about 900 words. So while I do plan to narrow this scene down to fit the community, you guys get the extended version of this story. (Which probably means you'll get more extended versions in this storyline, too.)

Okay, there is some important information missing from the summary of D.E.B.S.. Without your recommendations, I doubt I would have ever rented it (though I did look at it a couple times in the video store, before I switched to Netflix), but I am so glad I did.

The summary from the Netflix sleeve: Encrypted within the S.A.T. is a secret test that measures a girl's potential for espionage. Amy (Sara Foster), Janet (Jill Ritchie), Dominique (Devon Aoki) and Max (Meagan Good) score so high that they're recruited to join the elite paramilitary group known as D.E.B.S. But when their mission to capture arch villainess Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster) gets complicated, even their spy skills might not be able to save them....

Which, okay, had I known earlier Jordana Brewster was in it, I would have been sold. I've been a fan of hers since The Fast and the Furious, though obviously not as much as Michelle Rodriguez. However, that one big, important piece of information missing?

ExpandIs technically a spoiler. )

Obviously I have somehow managed to put together a flist with the best taste in the world. How, I still do not know, but all of you are awesome. First BSG and now D.E.B.S. People, what would you like me to watch next? I will listen to whatever you say!

[livejournal.com profile] thestalkycop, you MUST see this movie. I will bring it with me when I come visit if you don't get it before then. It's no Lost & Delirious but still great. We'll watch them together for balance.

Also, expect fic. I mean, come on, Jordana Brewster. Humina. Also, I feel so much better about the Letty/Mia OTP I have going on.

I think I want to write Letty/Mia to "Woman Like a Man" by Damien Rice. It's always been a Faith song to me, but I can see it fitting Letty, too.

Finally broke into the last two dvds. I had planned to do it this weekend, but stayed far too busy for far too long, between meetings and getting rid of books and gaming all night Saturday night. I continue to love it.

ExpandBattlestar Galactica season one continued )

I'm interested in the religious theories about how it is treated in the show; any good essays/thoughts?

I am definitely going to have to buy this show so I can rewatch to my heart's content.

In other news, I did, finally, manage to make it to the gym this morning, and I'm ready to up my weight on a number of moves. I have this problem where I nickle and dime it to death, and I know this, I did it even back when I first started lifting in high school, and I have to stop. I can handle more weight and fewer reps, and work my way back up. It's part of being a perfectionist, I don't like to switch to the higher weight until I am absolutely sure I can do all my sets with full reps, but that's not quite how it works best for my body.

I went to buy black handwraps after work, because I had so much free time. Unfortunately, every place is still out of the black, and I refuse to buy the white, so instead I picked up new trainers, sunglasses, and workout clothes. According to the workout bottoms I just bought, I have dropped three sizes. I still don't see it, but I know I'm down over thirty pounds, so maybe it's true. I don't know. The new clothes are so comfortable, though, and just in time for kickboxing tomorrow night. Plus it was nice to wear the sunglasses out in the late afternoon sun; I really need them this morning after the gym, as I drove into the sunrise to go home to shower. Painful.

I think I need a new PS2. I've had this one (or should I say J. has had this one) since they first came out, and it's starting to mess up on tonight's BSG dvd. Of course, it could just be because it's a Netflix dvd, but it messed up on the last disc of BtVS season seven the other day, too. It's starting to get frustrating. In no small part because I'm saving money for Wiscon, the Salt Lake holiday, and the new place this summer, so I don't want to have to buy a new PS2. I just went and checked the disc, and it is pretty scratched, so maybe that's it.

It's almost bedtime anyway. I want to go back to the gym in the morning, to get lower body lifting done, because after kickboxing I'm too exhausted to do anything else. In a good way, but still. Time to up the weight on the leg work, too, and tomorrow I want to add in some deadlifts, which I've never done before. This morning the gym was just as crowded at 5:30 a.m. as it is at 5:30 p.m., except in the morning the crowds were on the cardio machines and in the afternoon there are a bunch of guys hogging the weights. (The wrestlers from the high school, mostly, I think.) It was easy to get the bench this morning, and tomorrow I shouldn't have any trouble getting the squat wrack. Good times.

I read the BSC Friends Forever Super Special today, Everything Changes or something like that, and I was hit with the need to write Kristy/Abby.

[livejournal.com profile] aphrodite_mine is looking for interest in a femslash fic exchange based on music (and possibly multi-fandom).

I've already finished disc one of BSG season one. Woe! I love it so much, but I will be done with the two discs I have too soon and then the third isn't coming until Monday. I really need to slow down on this. Plus I think we're going to game tonight, so I need to drag myself away--except. BSG. And Dog Soldiers is on Sci Fi tonight. I love that movie. And, um, well, the girl and the boy are both online right now, so I'm not inclined to want to leave the general vicinity of my computer. Soon though, I will.

Also, did you know the femslash06 is due Monday, not Tuesday, despite the fact they said Tuesday in the past couple of emails. Interesting mistake, that. Eh, Monday, Tuesday, whatever, but I can understand why other authors are maybe a little upset about it.

I continue to love Starbuck.

You know, I'm loving some shows right now, and fandoms and such, and okay mostly my flist, but still, there is love. Except. Except where are all the gay women? Where are all the bisexual women? Even the new buddy cop show (which, I admit, I enjoy) has gay male subtext, but where is the gay women subtext? Or, better yet, text? Why do I fear ever getting the novel published because it has gay female main characters in a supernatural setting? (And also, not first person, because I hate that shit. Almost no one can do it well, and I have yet to read an author who does it well most of the time. Except almost everything else is in first person.)

You know, it's possible I a) did not spend enough time with the weights today working off frustration and b) am ready to bitch about anything. I'm about a day away from my period, I think, which is just something else to hate and bitch.

However, Roseanne is something to watch and enjoy. I need a diet Dr. Pepper and then I'm going to curl up in bed and watch it for awhile.

Supernatural was fun, though.

Anyone have any good Buffy/Tara recs?

(I am still shocked I don't hate Buffy as much this time around. Dare I say, once in awhile in rewatching all these seasons, I've actually liked her, and even rooted for her.)

There is a very interesting discussion on fluid sexuality in fandom going on in [livejournal.com profile] missambs' journal. The part I found most interesting is about how though straight characters are often put into slash pairings, canon gay characters aren't often put into het pairings, which is very interesting, and though I've had that thought before (mostly while comparing the Oz/Tara/Giles and Dawn/Willow stories while writing them), I hadn't seen it discussed before. (Not that it hasn't, I think [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin even mentions in the comments there she sees that discussion a lot, I'm just very out of the loop usually.)

[livejournal.com profile] velvetandlace has interesting thoughts and questions about literary trends in young adult fiction and how they are blurring the lines between young adult and adult. I find this topic endlessly interesting.

I also have thoughts on fluid sexuality in young adult fiction, which I will try to put together soon.

Now I have to go lay down. My neck aches and the lack of sleep is making me ill, I can feel it. I don't even have a relaxing weekend to catch up on my rest (though I'm looking forward to it).

All I want to do is continue to talk about femslash and feminism and writing and fandom, and I can't. I have to do some professional writing and then go practice my bass and get ready for work tomorrow and I'm exhausted and want to go to bed. Not as much as I want to be posting right now. I started typing up thoughts earlier at work, and I think I'll make it a goal to get it finished by this weekend and posted, to distract myself from the fact I should have been flying to Manchester on Thursday, and obviously I am now not. (Plus today I found tickets for $400, including taxes. Leaving next Tuesday and coming back on Valentine's Day. I am actually debating this, because the passport has been found again, and I don't believe it needs to be renewed. [Not that the missing passport is why I am not going on Thursday as planned, to see [livejournal.com profile] thestalkycop and, oh yeah, The Mighty Boosh live (goddamnit), that blame sits firmly on my car literally falling apart in December.] Why do I always find the best tickets when I am not planning to actually go? I am so, so, so tempted, but I know I should wait until later this year.)

Anyway, I want to keep going with all these interesting conversations and thoughts, but I must go do other writing. Harumph. (Kidding. I love my other writing.)
escritoireazul: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] femslash06 is taking sign-ups for this year's ficathon and I'm really impressed with some of the wild card fandoms people have requested and say they can write. Lovely fandoms I really enjoy, most of them.

There's been talk about how House and Sports Night are making a really good showing in the wild card requests, when both of the fandoms have a major bent toward male slash (which even I know, at least in regard to House--I don't watch either show, nor have much experience with the fandoms), and it reminded me of my own pet fandom which is dominantly male slash oriented but where I want to see femslash. This is The Fast and the Furious, and I have requested it in my sign-up for [livejournal.com profile] femslash06, but if any of you would like to write me some, maybe for my upcoming birthday, I would adore you for all time.

I'm not very involved in FatF fandom (or in any fandom, at this point, I just kind of hover along the edges of many fandoms), but from what I've seen, the majority of the fic (and icons and vids, but I'm a ficcer, so I talk about fic) is male slash, and most of it is either Dominic/Brian from the first movie or Brian/Rome from the second (or variations of those three characters, usually Brian using Rome as a substitute for Dominic). I can see why, both movies are male slash friendly, and there are so many more guys than girls anyway.

(From here on out, I'm going to mostly ignore the second movie, because I've only seen it once, and don't own it, so I can't refer to the source material.)

However, the first movie does have two interesting female characters, Letty and Mia, and they are often ignored and/or abused. Even in the few het stories I've seen, both women are often cast aside in favor of an original female character (usually a Mary Sue).

I just don't understand it, especially with all the stories pairing Dom/Brian. I understand why they're put together (on different levels, from the "oooh, hot guys making out" [even though I don't actually find Brian hot] to the way they interact, which is very slash friendly, etc. etc.). What I don't understand is why there aren't more stories about Letty and Mia, either with other women or together.

Especially together.

Letty is a dominant, angry woman who, in my opinion, wants to be the center of Dominic's universe (or the center of anyone's universe, and Dom is the one she has) but she knows she will never be that to him, because he is the head of the family, he brings everyone together. As Mia says, he's like gravity, and he is the center of all their worlds, so no one person can be the center of his. Letty can drive away outside competition (see the catty comments and the verbal attacks on any woman who dares to speak to him when they are all in public, away from the garage and the house), but she can't do that with the family, and doesn't often try. The most she can do is distract him for awhile (see Letty immediately whisk Dom away from the after-race party to have time alone with him, despite their guests), but he always returns to his duties to everyone else.

This is only exacerbated by Brian's presence. He's the new guy, the bone of contention in the balance of the old group dynamics, the upgraded part which doesn't quite fit into the rest of the car. Brian takes Dom away from Letty; this does not have to be in a male slashy way, either, canonically he's taking up Dom's time in the garage and preparing for Race Wars, and there isn't a thing Letty can do about it.

Within the source material there are suggestions that Brian ties Mia and Dom together in his mind, not sexually, but that he's afraid to go after Dom as the criminal because Mia is related to him, and Brian cares for Mia. It's not difficult to extrapolate that perhaps Mia is a replacement for Dom in Brian's head, the Toretto he can lust after without dealing with the fallout of a homosexual desire. (Many male slash stories do extrapolate just that, in fact.)

I can see Letty doing the same thing to Mia; Dom is distracted by the others, Dom is busy, and Mia is there, always in the background. She is the safer of the Toretto siblings; while Dom is very dominant and argues his position (though he does often give in to Letty), Mia reveals her strong personality only in bursts. She is more subtle in the way she manages the others, and is the least entrenched in the racing mentality. She studies, and, it can be assumed, wants more than just the garage and the street racing life.

Mia also wants to be the center of someone's world, to come first before her brother, who brings everyone together.

So here are two women, both looking for validation and wanting to be wanted. One defies stereotypical female roles (Letty races, works in the garage, embraces her sexuality, is treated as "one of the guys" to the point she plays games and watches movies with them after dinner instead of doing dishes, which is Mia's job because she is female); one feels trapped within both female roles and familial roles (Mia wants to live somewhere where she doesn't have to cook and clean because she's the female, she wants to escape her brother's influence, she has greater dreams than street racing and theft). These two women watch their male sexual interests spend more time interacting with each other (sexual or not) than with them.

Why are they not paired? Mia wants out of her "place" as a woman and as a sister, which Letty has done; Letty wants to be important to someone, and Mia is looking for someone to love. Letty wants Dom, but if she can't have him constantly, why wouldn't she turn to Mia? Mia is an extension of Dominic, which she hates, but is used to people treating her as such.

Plus, if you're just looking for the hot, have you seen them? Yes. Yum.

I want to see stories where Dom's off with Brian (sexually or not), so Letty goes to Mia. Stories where Mia crushes on Letty for being so different from the female definition Mia is thrust into by her family (especially stories set before Dom notices Letty, and even stories where Mia is the experiment for Letty, thrust aside for Dom when he comes calling, and this makes Mia's need to be the important one, over and above Dom, even stronger). Stories where Mia and Letty are together after the movie, healing physically and mentally, which leads to sex. Stories where Letty overwhelms Mia, seduces her because she can. Stories where they sneak together at night, steal minutes wherever they can.

There is so much potential for them, why is it never touched?

So I hope someone writes me Mia/Letty. I'm working on at least one Mia/Letty story, and now I have more ideas. And if anyone has any links, I'd appreciate them.

I am trying to gather my thoughts on some very interesting discussions (and [livejournal.com profile] kphoebe, I think you'd have some things to say about these, too), but I'm so far into my writing I can't shake the plots from my head. Instead I'll collect the links here and try to come back to them later.

These are just in the order I found them, not necessarily the order they were written or any other order, for that matter.

[livejournal.com profile] twinkledru expands on her thoughts on femslash and whether women are underrepresented in western media (which was actually sparked off by her shorter post why is femslash the redheaded stepchild of fandom?). She makes a lot of good points, and then in response to both posts, there are dozens of thoughtful and thought-provoking comments.

Edited to Add: [livejournal.com profile] twinkledru has a follow-up post.

[livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight talks about her favorite female characters and if her favorites aren't the women who carry the physically strong label, does that mean she doesn't like strong women?

[livejournal.com profile] fox1013 asks what makes a female character interesting, and what people think some female characters are missing which makes them less likeable.

And there it is, the conversations which are starting to distract me from my writing, but the writing has to come first.

Why does the thoughtful mood fox look so upset? Thinking is good.

So I just went and bought Mean Girls so I can write femslash. I? Am so cool. This story idea? Also so cool. I'm half-afraid it's already been done, because I've only read one Mean Girls story and it was written specifically for me (I love you, Sarah), so I have no idea what is out there in the fandom.

However, I love Regina. Love her. She's so bitchy and wicked and evil. She reminds me of Shauna.

How can I not love this movie? Bitchy, caculating, evil Regina. High school students acting like animals. I've done more than one project about animal behavior in humans, and evolutionary psychology and oh. This movie just covered some of the more fun points of it. Amazing, absolutely fabulous.

I should get back to this story. I had another idea, but one of the lines in the movie gave me a scene which won't go away, so I'm going to write it instead, and leave the other one for another time. So much fanfic this weekend, I'm thrilled with my writing.

See the icon? Sarah made it to go with the story. It makes me smile. More people should write Mean Girls stories.
escritoireazul: (vin what have I become)
What have I been doing? Working a lot, preparing for my holiday with [livejournal.com profile] thestalkycop, and watching Victoria Pratt hit things. I purchased Cleopatra 2525 and have almost finished the series (Victoria Pratt and Gina Tores!) and keep catching Mutant X on television. Pratt's characters certainly do hit things a lot. A whole lot. She looks so good doing it I of course won't complain.

Cleopatra 2525 is cheesy, silly, at times poorly written, did not have a big enough special effects budget--but I adore it. The more I watch, the more I love, and I am both so sad I'm almost done and already looking forward to rewatching it. The dialogue is often poorly written, but the characters are amazing, and I think the overall plot had a lot of potential. I wish they could have taken it farther.

I must find fiction about this show. Cleo, Hal, and Sarge were certainly having threesomes, and I really think Hal was more than a little in love with Cleo (and Sarge with both of them). I've not seen much so far, but how can there not be slash about this show? Three powerful women spending all their time together, often comforting each other physically, and the main male characters are either bad guys or their robotic helper who has no sex drive.

Come on, where is the slash?!

I think I might have to write some, myself.

Mutant X is also cheesy, silly, often poorly written, and the poor man's X-Men, but unlike Cleopatra 2525, the overall plot isn't nearly as interesting, nor are the characters well developed. I'm rather fond of Shalimar, but much of the feeling is because she's Victoria Pratt's character, and I am a big fan of the energy she brings to her characters, the quirky smiles, the physical strength, and the sexuality.

Also, she is beautiful, which I enjoy.

What have I not been doing? Writing fanfiction. I should, I have so many story ideas and the Butterfly Effect ficathon is due next month, but I haven't been. I've been working on original writing, both fiction and non-fiction, but I miss fandom writing, too, especially the stories I'm writing with [livejournal.com profile] shisaiyan.

I did get part of the next chapter of "Queertet Revisited" written and sent to [livejournal.com profile] thestalkycop. We have quite a bit of the next ten chapters or so written, we just need to add in specific scenes we skipped, but it's slow going these days, we're both so busy. However, two weeks from yesterday we'll be on holiday together for two weeks and will maybe do some work. I'm taking my laptop, anyway.

When I bought Cleopatra 2525, I also picked up Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (very cute, better than Stitch The Movie but not as good as Lilo & Stitch) and The Pacifier, which is still silly and Disney, but Vin Diesel remains the most sensual man on earth. Shower scene, shower scene, oooh la la.
