Fandom: Sports Entertainment

Because every time is sports entertainment time.
I realized after filling out that friend meme that I didn't mention being fannish about sports, which I am! So here is a bit of information about the sports I love (potentially part one in a series about broad categories of my fannish things -- one would be werewolves, of course).
Sports! I love sports. I'm not super great at sports that require hand-eye coordination in throwing and catching (or variations on) (though I am really good at the hand-eye coordination of hitting things with my fists and target practice), but I love sports.
Specifically, I find the following sports immensely entertaining:
SPORTS BALL!
College (USA) football! I am a Michigan fan, despite them being pretty much terrible for much of the last decade. I will also watch Mizzou games, because that's the big Missouri team, even though that's not where I went to school in Missouri. (My undergrad's football team is terrible in a way that makes Michigan look good.) I'm really only a fan of football because I marched throughout high school and college, and so spent a lot of time at football games.
Pro (USA) football! Primarily because I'm in a fantasy league (well, two this year) with one of my grad school bffs and my nephew. Last year was my first year, and I kicked everyone's ass throughout the main season, and only barely lost the championship to grad school bff. (Nephew is still bitter.) I hardly ever watch games live, but I love fantasy football and trash talking friends and family. I'm a St. Louis Rams fan by dint of where I grew up, but an Indianapolis Colts fan because of watching so many games with grad school bff during grad school.
SPORTS PUCK!
Pro hockey! I've loved hockey most of my life, for some unknown reason because no one else in my family was ever a sports fan at all, much less a hockey fan. St. Louis Blues all the way, though I grew fond of the Detroit Red Wings while I lived in Michigan. (And I have a horrible fondness for the Anaheim Ducks because Mighty Ducks, how could I not?)
College hockey! Michigan hockey was delightful while I was there, but Sister K has recently started loving hockey too (her husband is a big Blues fan), and last year started going to college hockey games where she lives. SO MUCH FUN. ICE BEARS FOREVER. Teeny tiny rink, they get basically no money from the school, and they can be sloppy, but they have so much heart. It's sort of like the Mighty Ducks come to life up in here.
IT'SFAKE (WE PREFER!) PRE-DETERMINED!
Pro wrestling! Mostly I watch WWE (sometimes, though not lately, the PPVs, mostly the weekly tv tapings, when I can live events, and Total Divas), but I love the over-the-top violence and mayhem of CZW, and I've been a fan of Shimmer since before I even started watching pro wrestling, back when I was doing research for a Lauren Zizes fic.
I generally don't read or write pro wrestling fic, though I am intrigued by the gray area between fictional characters and RPF here. I think, more than anything, WWE fic is fictional character fic (because these are characters! I know that!) but it really feels more like RPF, and I'm not all that interested in RPF fic. (I love how people love it, though, when they are fannish about it.) But I find the blurred lines in pro wrestling super interesting, and not just in fic-writing fandom. They're actors playing roles, but it often doesn't seem like that when it comes to pro wrestling. Total submersion into character? Only good at playing characters that are basically themselves? What's "real" and what's "fake" and what's the difference?
All of that, and people are flipping and hitting and kicking and leaping over the top rope. I love pro wrestling, and I can't believe it took me so long to start watching. (I only started in the first place because BFF and her husband kept telling me about it until I gave in.)
LITTLE BIT BEAUTY, LITTLE BIT BEAST!
Gymnastics! While I lived in Michigan, I started attending college meets, and paying more attention to college gymnastics, but I've always loved watching the Olympics and the lead-up to it. Power! Beauty! Terrifying stunts!
Dance! I both love to dance and love to watch dance. It's only been in the past few years that I started being interested in ballet; I never wanted to take lessons, and never really cared much for watching it, but sometime in the past decade, that changed, and now I devour all sorts of ballet media (Dance Academy! Breaking Pointe! Pointe by Brandy Colbert!), and love to watch ballet dancers dance.
Horses! I grew up with horses, riding Western, but I am so intrigued by English style riding and all the hunter-jumper events. So much strength! So much beauty! So much jumping over things.
SHOT THROUGH MY HEART!
Guns and Arrows: I don't actually follow any sort of target shooting or archery, but I grew up with bows and arrows and guns, and I love, love, love a good session at the shooting or archery range.
HIT THE HIGHWAY LIKE A BATTERING RAM!
Cars! I also don't follow professional racing (though Nephew does sprint cars, so I hear about it often), but my god, I love drag racing and high speed. I finally bought my dream car a few years ago, a Dodge Charger, and the rumble of its engine is one of the best sounds in the world.
Motorcycles! Ride or die, baby. Ride or die. (My riding group would rather I didn't die, though.)

Date: 2015-09-08 10:03 pm (UTC)I also love shooting guns and bows, too.
Awesome! I grew up in a small town, and did my undergrad at a small state university, but grad school, I was at a much bigger state university (in a different state), and most of my grad school friends are from big cities and had never even seen a gun up close, much less held one. My brother gives classes on shooting, so slowly I have introduced them to him and had him teach them. (I am too impatient to teach.)

Date: 2015-09-08 10:05 pm (UTC)I joined the army in 2004 so even though I'm a big city kid, I know my way around a firearm. Although handguns are kind of a new thing to me, and I'm having to completely relearn how to shoot with them. My husband is teaching me.

Date: 2015-09-08 11:27 pm (UTC)alas, nothing. I was dropped off a rappelling wall, told I'll never run again, and kicked out. It also caused my schizoaffective disorder because I hit my head in it. So, overall, not a big success, but still probably one of the things I am proudest of in my life.

Date: 2015-09-08 07:36 pm (UTC)My fave wrestler has been Jeff Hardy since he debuted. I'm gutted he's at TNA because TNA just feels...Idk I like the big event drama of WWE and I prefer their comb team. I know his skillz leave a lot to be desired in the throwing a real looking punch area but I love everything else he does. Just...less talking dude.
I miss Edge like a limb.

Date: 2015-09-08 11:19 pm (UTC)It got stale for a while but now the title is finally off Cena for an extended time I'm into it.
I agree. I only started watching back in 2013, but even I got bored for awhile (and didn't have years of watching the same storylines repeating behind me to make me bored) and had to take a break earlier this year. I don't mind Cena much, but I am not a fan of his wrestling. (And I actively hate many of his promos, especially as they keep selling him as this superhero for kids. His words are not superhero, guys. Get it together.) And I love Seth Rollins as a whiny heel. Back before the Shield broke up, I never would have pegged how much I enjoy him solo, but by god, his character is ridiculous and delightful.
The divas. Uuuurgh there is so much talent. Give them more air time outside of NXT dammit.
So much agreement here. Bff, who got me into wrestling, keeps reminding me it's much better now than it used to be for the divas, but as I tell her, better does not mean good enough.
(Naomi and Tamina are my favorites.)
I have this horrible feeling that to spite CM Punk Nikki will pass AJ's reign and that just bugs me all over.
I like Nikki a lot, but I agree with this. Rumor has it she's been working injured for awhile just so they can get her across that finish line, and that's not fair to anyone. Plus, it seems weird to have had AJ so recently beat the record, only to pretty much immediately take it away. And petty as hell.
I miss Edge like a limb.
Edge is BFF's favorite wrestler of all time. I never got to see him wrestle (well, I mean, actively, I've watched old matches), but she talks him up all the time.
BFF convinced me to start watching because of the Usos. She kept telling me about twin Samoan who were bulky but high flyers until I watched a match, and then I was sold. Still so glad I became a wrestling fan. Even when it's boring or infuriating, it brings me great joy.
