So I was going to do a long Comica Obscura rec post before bed, but when I started flipping channels, I found out Pitch Black is about to come on Sci-Fi. I'm sorry, Vin Diesel and my cozy bed trumps sitting up with my back to the television.

So just a quick rec post instead, while the credits roll for whatever Indiana Jones movie was just on.

Both in the comicverse I love despite myself, Ultimate X-Men.

Cruising for a Bruising, featuring Ultimate Northstar. Holy cow. I know I've said that Colossus/Wolverine is my new OTP baby (and funny how OTP typoed becomes my new TOP -- yeah, I'd do anything for it), but Jean-Paul kills me in this story. His cute crushing and crazy plans to catch Piotr's attention, his slow transformation from wanting to have nothing to do with the X-Men into being interested in more than just the lovely metal man -- it all works, so well. His voice is strong and funny and sweet all at once.

Air, featuring Ultimate Northstar. I have to quote it, because I can't summarize it and do it justice.

He's never cared what anyone thinks of him.

His father could be kicked out of his job. His family could be threatened.

He could fly.

He... he doesn't know what to think. He doesn't want to have to. He just wants to be mindless, to not have to make himself remember to forget. He doesn't want this. He --

Is floating about a foot off the ground.

Holy shit.

The shock almost makes him lose his balance, and he flails in mid-air for a moment before regaining his equilibrium. He hovers uncertainly, and then cautiously directs his body to move forwards a little.

It obeys.

A grin spreads over his face. Okay, this is just cool.

Too often when a character flies for the first time, he or she takes to it too easily, and that awe, that amazement of doing something almost no one else can do, is lost in the speed of transformation. I love this and the believable fear coupled with pleasure that Jean-Paul feels.

All right, Riddick's talking, I'm going to go curl up in bed and listen. Humina. Really must unpack my DVDs this weekend.

Also, I handwrote four pages of metalangst today at work. [livejournal.com profile] kphoebe I blame you.
