This is the second story I wrote as a treat for summerstorm, in case the story I meant to fill the pinch hit didn't work. I actually wrote the first few paragraphs of this as a part of the pinch hit, but it didn't fit the tone I wanted to use in the Payson/Sasha story, so I broke it off and made it something else.

One of my big complaints about the series, and one of the big complaints from most people who watched it, is that after three seasons of following these girls on their quest to become Olympic gymnasts, the show doesn't actually take them to the Olympics. SO FRUSTRATING. So with this, I set out to finally give Payson her dream.

This was the first story I wrote as a treat when it looked like I wouldn't be able to make "Golden Touch" work. I love Emily Kmetko a lot, despite how the show ended up treating her character, and summerstorm and I have talked about her a lot in the past. I find Payson and Emily's dynamic really interesting; Payson has had the best coaches and gyms, despite the fact her family isn't rich, while Emily, whose family is flat poor, has been teaching herself and working out at the Y before she joins an elite (expensive) gym. Payson is all strength and precision and perfection, at least when the show begins, and Emily is anger and stubbornness and distrust. They are both very, very good gymnasts, and I like the way season one works around them both.

I grabbed summerstorm's pinch hit, because I already had this story started as a treat for her. I always enjoy talking about the fandom with her, and she loves many of the same things I love about it. To be honest, Payson/Sasha is not one of the things I love, because I nope out of pretty much every pairing where the guy is older and in a position of power over the girl, but I like how summerstorm loves them so much, and I've read with interest all the things she's said, so I wanted to give it a try. After I picked up the pinch hit, I actually wrote two additional stories for her, because this one didn't want to come together; it took me a long, long time to make it actually work. I'm glad I did; I like it a lot, and I even managed to handle the power dynamics in a way that worked for me, at least within the boundaries of the story.

Also, Payson Keeler is the absolute best. I love her as a character so much.

Authors have gone live for Yuletide, so I can post these stories here now, with a little commentary. I actually wrote all these stories in order this year. I knew as soon as I got my assignment that I wanted to write this one. [livejournal.com profile] turnonmyheels asked for something Emily-centric and Emily is, by far, my favorite character. I over-identify with the poor girl thrust into a world full of rich people and how much you can feel like you don't belong because you haven't had the same opportunities. Plus I love the way Payson and Emily relate to each other; though this is a gen story, I also see them in a slashy way, and I may try my hand at that at some point.
