This was the first year I was familiar enough to write more than one of the requests in my Yuletide assignment, and as soon as I saw that, I knew I wanted to try to write more than one story for my recipient.

This was a hard story to write, even though I was intrigued by the idea of a story about courtly love. Part of the problem was that I hadn't finished the season yet, and part of the problem was that I really, truly hate Tig. I hate Tig a lot. I find him a sick and disturbing man in a world that is built on killers and gun runners and sick and disturbing men. I hate him partly because of what he did in season one (being purposely vague here, but probably if you are reading this and are familiar with the show, you've already seen my rage) and partly because of some little aside comments that get made about him and the way he treats the women he fucks.

So it was very, very freaking difficult to write a story in which he is, more or less, the romantic lead. I hope this story works despite my dislike of the main character, and I tried to twist in a bit of a commentary on what the show basically holds up as a joke. I also tried to balance in the fact that I fully believe Tig is enamored with Gemma and always has been.

Though I tried so hard to not give myself away with the titles this year (not a single parenthesis! I was so proud of myself), I did give myself away by writing Eden/Kala. [livejournal.com profile] catalinay guessed that I wrote this, in part because I'm one of the small handful who writes Kala into the stories. Plus I've written a lot for her lately, so I'm sure that makes it easier to guess.

Quite some time ago [livejournal.com profile] bewize showed me this video because she thought it might inspire my writing. It worked. When she started talking about requesting it for Yuletide, I knew I wanted to give it a try. It ended up being one of my favorites of my stories this year, which was a pleasant surprise. It was also the first story I wrote this year that made me want to cry. Heartbreaking threesomes for the win. (The second new fandom of Yuletide; Make It or Break It was first.) I also got to do some really fun research on time appropriate language.

This was the last story I wrote and in some ways, almost as hard as the Sons of Anarchy story, because I was taking different source material (the short story series, but also an earlier song and various hitchhiking ghost stories) and trying to make it work without outright contradicting itself. Because what I like best about stories like Sparrow Hill Road (and early Supernatural) was the reimagining of ghost stories and urban legends.

The opening lines of this sat around in an otherwise empty file for weeks before I finally figured out the rest of the story.
