btvs 1.01-1.04

I've started another rewatch of BtVS, in order, starting with season one.
Aw, every time I start the series over, I remember again how cute it was in the beginning. Compared to the Buffy from seasons six and seven in particular, season one Buffy is sweet and adorable.
Xander is goofy and dorky, neither of which I normally find cute, but knowing what he grows into makes it just adorable.
"Hey, you forgot your ... stake."
Cordelia and Buffy sharing a textbook is kind of hot. However, Cordelia's out, not cool. Green trousers like that? And the ponytale? I forgot she wasn't always such a classic dresser. Buffy looks freshman-in-college-wanting-to-attract-guys but less dated.
Willow geeking on books is also hot.
I love it when Buffy says she doesn't care if there are vampires on campus and Giles asks, "Then why are you here?"
Even from the beginning, she tries not to care, she claims not to care, she sometimes fakes it very well but Buffy--mostly--cares.
Oh, I love Joyce, with her positive energy and trying to get the gallery on its feet and her reading of parenting books. She tries so hard in such a bad situation.
Wow, Angel with the young and kind of scrawny. And nice chiny coat there, hellmouth boy.
"Let's just say I'm a friend."
"Maybe I don't want a friend."
"I didn't say I was yours."
So, whose friend is he? Does that reference Whistler? Is it trying to be spooky and make us think he's really a friend of the Master?
Man, if Willow and Xander dated at five, they certainly started young. It makes me giggle.
Also, Buffy and Willow's building friendship is cute. I want more of that, and I really missed it in later seasons.
Xander confronting Buffy about her thinking she's the vampire Slayer is awesome.
Oooooooh, Darla's going to eat (and/or turn) Willow and Jesse. I don't remember now--in that season three episode, is Jesse still around when Willow and Xander are vampires? If not, why are Willow and Xander vampires? I mean, if Buffy hadn't come to Sunnydale, Willow and Jesse wouldn't have been saved, so they either both should have died or both should have been vampires. Unless Willow would have never "seized the day" without Buffy's influence. But then, if a guy had started flirting with her, would she have gone anyway, even with Buffy's talk? Plus it's obvious that she does become a vampire, so where's Jesse? (If he's in the episode and I've just forgotten, that fixes this train of thought.)
So, when seniors can leave campus for lunch in season three, is that a change with the principal change? I can't see either of them actually making that campus rule, and in season one episode two, it's pretty obvious no one leaves campus during school hours.
Badass vampire walk led by Darla. Nice. Also, the bouncer at the Bronze is kind of hot. Too bad that job has a high turnover rate.
I like how there's no badass power walk for Buffy and the Slayerettes, just frantic running because they're late.
When Buffy stakes the pool stick, why doesn't he turn to dust? We hear his body hit the floor, and the pool stick doesn't evaporate before it disappears. Sloppy editing.
So I put away laundry during 1.3. I really like the science teacher in this one, the first science teacher. He's right, Buffy can be smart, if she just applied herself (or wasn't the Slayer). I like too how he tells her not to listen to anyone's negative opinion of her. Good teachers can be hard to find. It's a shame he gets dead.
What this season needs is Oz and the band.
I like how Xander finds Angel all attractive. Buffy's little quips are actually pretty funny so far. A little silly, quite a bit childish, but still, I've giggled. Also, she has awesome boots.
Giles' little comment about the weather always being the same in Sunnydale makes me smile.
There has to be some sort of pheremone thing going on with the new science teacher, Ms. French, because I'm just not seeing the hot. Also, what kind of accent is that supposed to be, really?
I like the running bit about bodies shoved into tight spaces--the gym locker and the refridgerator so far.
"I'm an undead monster who can shave with my hand, how many things am I afraid of?"
I love when scary things get scared.
I was a sophomore in high school during this season. It's been a long time, baby. (Well, okay, not that long, but still.)

Date: 2006-09-17 05:58 am (UTC)Cordelia and Buffy sharing that book is totally hot! In fact, my RA is doing this whole, "You guys need to build hall community; print out your schedules and put them on your doors so you can see who you share classes with and study together!" Lame, I know, but I put a screencap of Buffy and Cordelia with the book on top of mine, so now mine is faintly homoerotic and makes me giggle.
I think the whole "a friend" thing was just Angel parrying Buffy's bravado. She's all "I'm too cool for you; I don't need you or your line," but at the end, he's got the last word and he leaves her stunned.

Date: 2006-09-21 05:52 pm (UTC)I think I might have to write about this, once I get to "The Wish" in my rewatching (which obviously won't be for awhile).

Date: 2006-09-18 01:04 pm (UTC)2. Jesse was not in "The Wish". I just assumed that instead of getting turned he was killed to free the Master, and that Willow and Xander were turned after the Master was freed from the Hellmouth. I think Jesse was only turned because he had ties to the Slayer and they used him to set a trap, not because he was anything really specal.
I watched the "Goodbye to the WB" last night and man the memories. It has been a long time since I have seen the first episode of BtVS. Watching me made me want to get the DVDs.

Date: 2006-09-21 05:54 pm (UTC)2. Would Willow have still been with Jesse at that point? Do you think Jesse was killed to free the Master and then Willow turned because he wanted more minions? Does it say in "The Wish" who sired her? (I realize I could probably answer all my own questions if I just watched the episode, but I'm going to do this in order, damn it!)
I meant to watch that, but I wasn't feeling up to it. Plus I have the DVDs of BtVS and season one of Angel, so I can have my own little goodbye to the WB if I want, I guess.

Date: 2006-09-21 07:40 pm (UTC)2. I think without Buffy's support she wouldn't have been that open to talking to someone and she would have just waited for Xander to get there. However, if Willow had ended up with Jesse, I think he would have been killed just to free the Master and Willow was most likely turned to be a minion or a toy. I'm pretty sure it was never said who sired Willow or Xander. There are of course the canon theories that Willow made Xander, that Xander made Willow, or the Master sired both of them.
