I've finally given in to the call of the tags feature, and I am obsessive and in love, which is pretty normal for me. Eventually I will have everything tagged, and I will have a list of tags in the sidebar, but oh, man, why did I hold out for so long? It makes my OCD happy, and I love making all the tags match.

Also, it's strange to see how often I talk about some things. For example, and the most surprising, I mention the weather a lot. Shock.

---

Actually, speaking of the weather, it rained today in the last hour of work, so I got wet riding home, but at least I didn't have any trouble. My first time with the motorcycle on wet roads, and everything went fine.

My burn continues to be disgusting and painful, but it is healing.

you can only use a tag 100 times and then it will stop cataloguing the entry under that tag. just an fyi

Yeah, but I have yet to run into an issue with that, even with my most popular tags. 100 entries is more than you think :)

it's also less then you think. LOL I filled up my work tag for instance in less than half a year. I still use the work tag more for me than for you know, finding stuff. heh

I'm finding sub-categories to be helpful in avoiding the 100 limit, but yeah, eventually I'll smack into it!

I'll have to take a look at your sub-categories, I think, to find a way to avoid the 100 limit. I'm not so worried about it here as on the other journal.

Damn. That's originally why I avoided them, but I heard a rumor lj had done away with that problem, and so I thought I'd give them a chance. Now I'm already addicted.

Luckily I use this along with the memories function, which is still my favorite, but it's very frustrating. I wonder why the limit is 100.

why it is set at 100 and not say 10000, I have no idea. According to the faq, it is still set at 100 though I just checked my work tag and it came up with 109 entries, *shrug* I happen to like tags and I think that a lot of people do, but yeah, it could be a better system.

I do like the tags, a lot, and I know many people use them over memories. Even if lj kept the number low in the beginning just as a beta, once it gained such popularity, I think it would be in their best interest to raise the limit (or remove limits) to keep up with that popularity. I'll keep using them, though, because they are fantastic.

You can, of course, make a tag like "work, part two" once you used up the 100 in "work". Just a suggestion for working within the system.

I happen to have tags like "angry daddy shit", "mom drama", and "societal evil", but that's just me...

I would go for subcategorizing by year or something, 'cause "work" versus "work part two" seems a fairly useless distinction whereas "work: 2005" and "work: 2006" are both useful tags.

Old entries will still have the tag on them, you'll just only be able to ?skip=20 back to 100, so once you've used a tag more than 100 times it starts to become a bit useless as a navigation tool.

I knew it! I knew you'd love tags once you got to know them! They are addicting little buggers. Can I make a suggestion, though? Instead of using double dashes, use a colon between subcategories. That way if you want your sidebar to be indented, it'll happen automatically. You can change tag names all at once in Manage Tags, so you wouldn't even have to go back to change each entry's individually.

You did know it, you smart girl, you. I should have listened to you sooner.

I'll have to think about the colon. It is a really good suggestion for the sidebar, but I absolutely love the double dashes. (I've been in a dash mood lately, for some reason.) I'm sure once I work on the sidebar, I'll be so overwhelmed I'll switch anyway just to make it easier.

Once S1 started supporting tags (though I still rage that S1 tag support is so lame, because I refuse to use S2) I caved. I have still only made a dent in the thousands of entries I have to tag, of course. As a supplement to Memories (I hate that people have started using it INSTEAD OF Memories) it makes my librarian heart glee.

My other journal is in S1, and I really like it better, though S2 is easier to make little changes to, so it works better for this journal, because I don't spend a lot of time on appearance here. (Not that I do there, either, my best friend wrote the code and did my layout.) I'm glad S1 supports the tags, though it doesn't seem to work as well as S2, which is annoying.

I will always prefer the memories, but I like the combination of the two, and will do just what you've said, use the tags to supplement the memories.

Yeah, I hate that LJ doesn't do basic stuff like embed the ?skip=20 link in the S1 tag layout.

I tweaked raw code from a friend for the S1 style I have and I feel like I grasped it pretty quickly, but the rare times I've attempted S2 recently I've started to pull my hair out with frustration trying to make it do much of anything.
