Fandom: remix redux 2012

Remix posted! And I'm sitting here thinking, how am I only #79 when it's 20 minutes until the deadline -- but I think the deadline is actually 12:00 a.m. eastern Sunday going into Monday, and I had it in my head that it was Saturday going into Sunday for some reason.

So I'm even a day early, for once!

As always, if you guess my story, I'll give you a prize. Comments screened for guesses.

So, so behind on everything else, though.

Glee fic: Arpeggio (The Broken Chord of Love Remix), Blaine/Kurt

Remix Redux authors have been revealed, I can post this here now. I actually wrote two stories for Remix, but the first went astray of the original. No, really astray. No, REALLY ASTRAY, such that I decided to save it for later. It was based off a tiny ficlet, so it was easy to go really astray, but still. So I wrote a second story, the one I actually posted. (The first will end up a part of the poly glee family series, so yeah.)

I wanted to write about a chromatic character, and in a way, I did, but in a way I didn't, too, because the show has never flat out acknowledged that Blaine is biracial, though there was that little hipster racism comment by Rachel in "Blame It On the Alcohol." Still, this story is informed by my belief that he is biracial.

No one guessed that this was mine, which is the first time I've done something like this and no one got it. (And despite there being a blink-and-you'll-miss-it glimpse of the badass foursome I so love.) I can't decide if that's because I've only posted one other Blaine-pov story, so my Blaine voice isn't fully established in the minds of readers, if I managed to not sound like myself (doubt it), or if the people who are the best at guessing just don't read Glee (this is my guess). We'll see what happens during Yuletide.

Anyway, here's the fic.

Fandom: Remix Redux Remix Madness

Remix Redux is doing Remix Madness this year. Yuletide Madness is one of my favorite fandom things, so I am particularly pleased by this. You don't have to have participated in Remix to participate in this. My thread is here.

I am so tired. Theoretically I am working on story three of the marching band au, but I am so exhausted I have written about a line in the last ten minutes. Ugh.

Fic Rec: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Glee

Why does writing never click until after nine and then I want to stay up to finish? Or maybe I should ask why must I work day jobs? Whatever, I have been writing over lunch and have pages and pages of Remix done, and tonight I finally started another theme-meme fill. I was beginning to think I had lost the urge to write Glee fic, but no, found a prompt that made me cackle, it was so awesome.

Fandom: Dear Remix Redux Author

Apparently I forgot to crosspost this last night.

My remix assignment is awesome. I wrote three pages over lunch, which is the earliest I've ever started a remix story. Go me.

---

Dear Remix Redux Author,

A couple notes on organization: Most of my recent fic is on DW, LJ, and AO3. You can also find fic posted to LJ or DW tagged with "fic" as well as "fic: fandom." I maintain a Complete Works of Escritoire Azul list (currently across three posts), which is probably the most comprehensive list of fic. (It may actually be completely up to date at this point; I know I just updated it with the most recent Glee fic tonight.) (It is LJ only.) (I've just realized it hasn't been updated with all of my December 2010 fic. I will try to do that this week. Done, I think. Just hadn't posted the crossovers under both fandoms.)

A-F | G-R | S-Z

I've participated in Remix Redux for a few years now. I think most of the fic in that masterlist is marked if it has been remixed, with a link to the remix, but to make it available in one place, here are the fics which have previously been remixed. (I think this is all of them, at least.)

"Second Chances" (Lost Boys) was remixed by Bat for Remix Redux 05: "Double Down (Be Kind, Please Rewind Remix)" (Lost Boys) (Though apparently the link is now broken.)

"the man i could be" (Harry Potter) was remixed by Ion Bond for Remix Redux 06: "The Man I Could Be: The Paved With Good Intentions Remix" (Harry Potter) (Though apparently the link is now broken.)

"on the road with disposable comestibles" (X-Men Movieverse) was remixed by [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce for Remix Redux 07: "Twinkie Run (The Stars & Garters Remix)" (X-Men Movieverse)

"sometimes it's better (BtVS) was remixed by [livejournal.com profile] resolute for Remix Redux 08: " Sometimes (I Can Make) It Better [Fangs and Fur Remix]" (BtVS/Ginger Snaps)

"Nothing's Fair at the End of the World" (Supernatural) was remixed by [livejournal.com profile] 42footprints for Remix Redux 09: "(Nothing's Fair At) The End Of The World (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Remix)" (Supernatural/Sandman)

"My Empire of Dirt" (BtVS) was remixed by Ruuger for Remix Redux 10: "I Would Keep Myself (Mirror Mirror Remix) (BtVS)

"Canaries in the Mines" (Firefly) was remixed by xaara for Remix Redux 10: "Until the Light Was Gone (The Frozen Earth Remix)" (Firefly)

I have loved all the stories remixing mine, and I think the important point here is that I can't wait to read your story. Feel free to tear into my story, to find a crack and shatter it into something new, to make a crossover where there wasn't one before. (I freaking love crossovers more than almost anything else, in case you aren't on my flist and haven't heard me talk about them on and on and on.) I can't wait to see what you do.

Twilight fic: Compass (The Harvest Moon Remix), Alice/Esme, Alice/Jasper

Remix authors have been announced, so I can post this here. [livejournal.com profile] soundingsea guessed correctly, so if you will give me a prompt in a fandom I write (see my user info for a list of all the fandoms in which I've written a story), I will make you something.

Title: Compass (The Harvest Moon Remix)
Author: escritoireazul
Author's Note: This is a transformative work of fiction for the Twilight series by Meyer.
Written for: Verity for Remix Redux 8: Magic Eight Ball.
Original story: Compass by Verity
Acknowledgments: Many, many thanks to my beta reader, [livejournal.com profile] carlyinrome, who absolutely made this story. She smoothed the jagged edges of the story, making things flow and actually have endings and make sense. She helped me turn disjointed scenes -- and sometimes very half-assed notes about scenes -- into a lyrical story that flows. Thank you so, so much, sweetie. I really appreciate all your help.
Rating: 16+ for sex

Summary: Alice sees, bits of the future glittering all like stars, and if she's very careful, she can pluck them from her mind and hold them between her palms, fragile and delicate; if she's very careful, she can make her favorite parts of the future become real.

Fic rec: Harry Potter, Star Trek, Supernatural

Time is running out to guess my Remix! If you have a guess, you can leave it here or on the other entry (I'm too lazy to link). The reveal is this weekend, I think tomorrow, but don't hold me to that. (And I don't know if I'll be around tomorrow anyway.)

---

Interesting discussion on poly in fanfic.

---

Maybe my last set of Remix recs before the reveal.

Harry Potter

Familiar and Strange is a beautiful, painful piece about Sirius trying to remember how to live after Azkaban.

No Way Back is a gorgeous, hurtful, real look at Percy during his estrangement from the family. It's a fantastic remix of the original, which looks at all the family thinking about Percy on his birthday.

How to Build a Home (Living in the Wilderness Remix) is a sweet, charming, slightly heartbreaking look at Sirius living on his own for the first time and trying to learn to create a home for himself.

Star Trek

There is Joy in Repetition (But Sometimes You Have to Break Routine Extended Remix) is an incredible look at Chapel and what it takes to be a hero and a leader and how self-doubt worms its way inside.

Care and Treatment of Psychologically Fucked Up Starship Captains (The Everybody's Fine Remix) is an excellent look at Kirk, McCoy, and Chapel and the intricacies of their personalities and their relationships.

Supernatural

Fear as an Aphrodisiac (The Horizontal Mambo Mix) is a super hot, super fun Dean/Ellen porny fic with an excellent, strong Ellen voice that made me fall in love with her all over again.

welcome to where time stands still (the no one leaves remix) is an incredible story about Risa and saving the world and the end of the world and god, it's a woman in this universe being amazing and having ties that extend so far beyond the Winchesters. This is what I want more of in the show, women being awesome, women fighting and being strong in their own ways and doing things other than being victims or villains.

Letters Home (The Echo 2/1 Remix) is a beautiful Mary/John story about John during the war and his letters home to her and it broke my heart and stole all my words.

Fic Rec: Harry Potter, Star Trek, Being Human

I was traveling when I got the news about this and it was really delightful to be surprised during the rare time I was getting to check my email.

"Broken," the Drusilla/Buffy piece I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies during Round 25 of [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis won "Best Overall Dark" and "Best Slash" in round three of the [livejournal.com profile] absence_oflight awards. I was actually kind of nervous writing "Broken" because I wasn't sure I could pull off a convincing Buffy/Drusilla, but I love the story and I'm glad other people did too. Also, Absence of Light awarded some incredible fics and I can't wait to read the ones I haven't.

---

More Remix Redux recs.

Harry Potter

20 Random Facts About Sirius Black, as Annotated and Explained by the Man Himself starts out as a sweet, hilarious, sometimes touching bit of back and forth between James and Sirius, who frequently addresses Harry with his annotations, but just as I was giggling and grinning, it took a sharp turn and left me heartbroken and wanting to cry. Excellent, high praise, that.

Star Trek

The Loudest Noise (affannato, affettuoso, agitato) is an incredibly well done story about language and communication, but it is so much deeper than that, so much more powerful, and Nyoto and Gaila are both amazing in it. Gaila in particular made my heart clench.

Free, Freefalling (The Home is Wherever I'm With You Remix) is a beautiful, painful story in which Chekov makes an official report, but is so very young and so very human and feeling so very guilty as he does so.

Four Times Kirk and McCoy Ended Up Together on Valentine's Day (The Hallmark Moments Remix) is funny and sweet and touching and charming, just a feel good fic about four years and two friends and broken hearts and lots and lots of love.

The Moment of Our Greatness Flickers (The Love is a Losing Hand Remix) is McCoy and Jocelyn falling in love and falling apart and is harsh and tense and painful because it is so exquisitely well done.

Pipe Dreams (The Marzipan in Your Pie Plate Megamix) is horrific and wonderful and shocking and just amazingly twisty. Why are Starfleet captains so fragile? And what happens after?

Never Put My Hope (the Second Generation Masters of Our Destiny Remix) definitely needs to be read after the original story, but the two go together so well it all feels real, like a story I grew up reading, like our history and our religion shaken down to its bones.

Being Human

Flowers in Your Footsteps (The Renewal Remix) is a lovely, layered story about Annie wanting new clothes, but also much deeper than that, about how we live without change and how we find our own ways to take up space and be real.

Fic Rec: PotC, BtVS, Harry Potter, X-Men, Figure Skating RPF, Firefly, FNL, Supernatural

So I thought about not reccing any fics for the fandom which includes my story, so no one could compare my recs to all the stories and then figure out which one was mine. And then I thought about commenting and reccing my own story if it came down to it, to throw people off. Then I decided maybe I was overthinking this guessing game, but it was a lot of fun. So really, I could have done either of those or both or neither.

---

Pirates of the Caribbean

Dwell in the House of the Lord (The Day You Always Remember Remix) is a chilling, haunting story of stories and the monsters hiding in the world, two men sharing the story of Captain Sparrow and the stories he told.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Un/Expected (Straight Girl Remix) is a fantastic Kennedy voice, mixing all the good and bad of her in the source material in a way that is starkly, honestly, hilariously real.

Harry Potter

The Chords We Play is an incredible remix. I tend to live it up to readers whether they read the original story with the remix, but I highly, highly recommend reading both of these stories together, because this twists the original inside out and even as Peter -- who is sharp and cruel and manipulative and still oddly sympathetic here -- manipulates the characters, the remix author manipulates the story so well.

The Wolf Covers Its Tracks (All Us Human Extras Remix) is an amazing look at Fenrir Greyback through the eyes of original characters as Harry Potter hunts him through Banff, Alberta. The children here are amazing, sharp and afraid and strong and weak and just wonderful, and in particular I love Stephanie Wu, whose point of view sections frame the story as a whole and who has a nice, lovely, quiet queer flirtation in the middle of all the blood and destruction.

Inter-House Relations (The Care of Magical Creatures Remix) has an amazing Charlie, sharp and intelligent and funny and besotted with his dragons, which is reason enough to read it. That it is also funny and fun and sweet are more. And though I do not like Draco Malfoy, I'm glad I have this one a chance, because the story is from his POV and still it is wonderful, enjoyable and entertaining and for the length of it, at least, Draco was really well done, caught in his family but fighting the bit.

X-Men Comicverse, X-Men 616, Figure Skating RPF

Fame Monsters (The Twitter Remix) is hilarious. Just absolutely, flat-out hilarious and perfectly in character and has an amazing Jubilee and Johnny Weir and Northstar and the power of the press and social media and it just feels like all the awesome bits of technology coming together, you know, fandom and tech and people and the amazing ways we can interconnect. And also, did I mention hilarious?

Firefly

River Lays an Egg (Upside Down Remix) has a fantastic River and some great River and Mal interaction. I love River's voice here in particular, slightly mad but slightly sane too and completely charming.

Something from Nothing (The Gratitude Sings in Me Chorale) is a lovely River piece, set just after Ariel, about paying debts and saying thank you and created family-in-crew. River's voice is really nicely done here, too.

Friday Night Lights

We're Glad for what We've Done, Done with what We've Lost: The Sing Me Anything Remix is an amazing Tyra piece, about the people left behind in Dillon and the way she's so stuck in her life, working so hard for something she's not even sure she wants and absolutely sure won't help her, and how sometimes it takes motivating someone else to get her to step up and do what needs to be done. Tyra's voice is incredible, so painful and harsh and developed and I love her interactions with Matt Saracen in particular.

Supernatural

Above Us Only Sky (The Golden Age Remix) is a breathtaking, beautiful story about Anna as an angel that left me wordless and filled with a quiet, humming joy and sadness together. It's absolutely lovely.

Fic Rec: Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Dude, I don't know how I got so lucky, but I got two absolutely amazing stories for Remix Redux.

Firefly

Until the Light was Gone (The Frozen Earth Remix) remix of my "Canaries in the Mines"

This is an incredible, haunting, lyrical story which stole my breath and made me lose all my words. There are thoughts about space and the emptiness of the sky and just amazing, amazing descriptions and language.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I Would Keep Myself (Mirror Mirror Remix) remix of my "My Empire of Dirt"

This takes the original and turns it all the way around and inside out and just tears it apart. It's fantastic and the Buffy here is so strong and amazing. I love the scenes with the First and the way it haunts her still.

Fandom: Remix glee, mostly

I have guests arriving soon and I desperately need to go to the grocery store, but it has been pouring all day and I just can't bring myself to leave the house. I am running out of time, though, so it will happen soon.

---

Life managed to become even more stressful. I am behind on answering all sorts of things -- emails, messages, texts, phone calls, etc. -- and probably won't be catching up on those or on reading LJ any time soon. If I should know about something, please drop me a note here and I'll try to take care of it sooner rather than later.

---

Despite the stressful life, I finished not just draft one, but draft two of my Remix fic. I have the most awesomest beta ever for this piece and ze has made the story so much better. Depending on how soon ze responds to draft two, I may even post Remix this weekend instead of, oh, at the last freaking minute as I normally do.

(Wait, Remix isn't due this weekend, is it? *frantically checks* No! It is not! So I may be uploading early! This is amazing!)

---

I am giddy about Remix, if you haven't noticed. It is a bright spot in a really stressful world.

Okay. Off to shop and then I will return to the couch and poke at Remix some more. Or maybe start answering emails.

---

ETA: On the positive side, got the beta back and it a) made me feel so much better about the story and b) was a super quick final fix, so I posted it already. One thing off my To Do list.

On the negative, more stress. Big new things, but then a little thing, too: I'm catching up on Legend of the Seeker and my dvr keeps skipping on this one episode ("Vengeance"). I just want to relax with dinner and a show, damn it.

Fandom: Dear Remix Redux Author

I am so busy I am using the same letter I wrote last year, with only a little bit of a tweak. (I did manage to hit 500 words on the remix I'm writing, which is good.)

---

Dear Remix Author,

Have fun! Don't stress!

No, really. I like remixes which take chances and which maybe the remix author worries isn't really a remix. I like remixes which take a ficlet or a drabble and turn it into something layered and longer and lovely. I like remixes which show me the characters I've written from a different character's point of view. I like remixes which take my story and show me the bigger story into which it fits.

Basically? I just like remixes. As long as you have fun writing it, I'm going to love it. Promise.

You received these in your assignment email, I'm sure, but just in case, technical details:

You can find my fic on LJ or DW under the fic tag under fic: [fandom]. I've not tested all of DW to make sure everything is properly tagged, so LJ is your best bet there. The LJ version of escritoireazul has The Collected Works of Escritoireazul: A-F and G-Z. This is updated fairly frequently and is probably the most current collection of my fic.

You have a list of previous remixes written (though one of them was for the Remus Remix and I'm not sure if that's eligible or not for remixing now, since it was a remix of a drabble written specifically for the Remus Remix), but also you should know that "Queertet Revisited" is technically a remix written with a coauthor who isn't participating and is therefore off-limits. Also, I've just realized that I can't remember if I listed "Four Things Adam Banks Didn't Do At His Reunion (the will he won't he remix)" as a remix, because it was written for the Mighty Ducks Butterly Ficathon, not Remix, but it is still a remix.

I love werewolves and women doing awesome things and crossovers and apocalypses and women from other fandoms becoming Slayers and girl slash and Fast and the Furious, particularly Letty/Dom and Letty/Mia, and I've written in something like 40 fandoms, depending on how you count them, so have fun!

---

Yeah, basically the only thing I had to add to this was the Collected Works link. Oh, and change the number of fandoms in which I've written, because apparently I added 10 fandoms last year. Who knew? (Probably me, when I did my end of the year fic round-up, but I'd forgotten already.)

I love Remix, have I mentioned that? It's my second favorite fic time of the year. (The first favorite is Yuletide.) I'm a little nervous about whether what I'm writing actually is a remix and not just one of my fics, but I'll make it work.

This is kind of heartbreaking, Harry trying to tell Teddy about his parents. It's painful and lovely all at once.

"A Second Breath (The Jacob's Ladder Remix)"

Summary: Her skin is smooth once more, pale, unmarked, but bones don’t forget, and neither does Luna.

This is heartwrenching, and beautiful, and I mourned the end because I didn't want to stop reading this lovely, lovely world. Luna's voice here is perfection, and the characters so very true to themselves.

"Goldfish Bowl (Glass Houses Remix)"

Summary: It's hard being normal in the goldfish bowl.

Bobby's characterization is amazing here, and there are perfect little bits of his obsession with Rogue's skin which reminds me so much of the eroticism of Fingersmith it took away my breath.

"What Friends Are For (Flow My Tears Remix)"

Summary: Xander takes steps to make sure he remembers what he needs to.

The original story is heartbreaking and a good read. The remix is absolutely horrifying. I am still chilled by it.

"Plate Tectonics (The Truth From Fiction Remix)"

Summary: Lorna talks to Rachel while she waits to see how her world will end.

This is amazing, and a fantastic twist on the original story. The ending of this one was like a gut punch, a line which encompasses exactly how it feels to have something slightly crazy and uncontrollable beneath your skin. (At least, that's my reading into it, for my own, personal reasons, but it was an incredible story which hit me hard. How do you tell fact from fiction? How do you tell which monsters are real? It's amazing.)

"Protective Urges (The Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon Remix)"

Summary: Mal had always been there to protect his Kaylee, and he always would be.

The end here is particularly effective, again, with a good conversation between characters and a believable, if painful, decision.

I'm reading instead of studying, of course. Dinner soon, though, some time outside in the nice weather and the full moon, and then back to the books.

"Every Farthing of the Cost (Dingoes At My Baby Remix)"

Summary: Oz can't help but be reminded of Giles whenever Remus is around, so he takes the withdrawn Remus under his wing.

Oz, Remus, werewolves, magic, and background Remus/Sirius. I love every single thing about this story, especially Oz's voice, and the way he and Remus interact.

"Where the River Meets the Dawn (The Strobe Lights and the Disco Remix)"

Summary: The Slayers are relaxing at the beach, and the Serenity crew are in trouble - or it might be the other way around.

I love Caridad's voice here, and the way the story is different from the original but still captures the excitement and joy of it.

"Eleven Hours at the End of the World (The Memento Mori Remix)"

Summary: A Slayer fights her way through a post-apocalyptic wasteland full of zombies, picking up a traveling companion along the way.

Post-apocalyptic wasteland full of zombies. Need I say more?

"Hold On Loosely (The Southern Rock Remix)"

Summary: "I'll be the best big brother ever, and you'll be the best little brother ever."

This story is so very, very much Dean Winchester I am amazed.

"By Any Other Name (The Fool's Paradise Remix)"

Summary: If ye should lead her in a fool's paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behaviour.

This is a fantastic exploration of what would grow from Mystique once she was no longer Mystique any more.

"Lucky Number Seven (By the Numbers Remix)"

Summary: The seven people Sirius Black has kissed, and the reason he hasn't had sex until the last one.

Remus and Sirius again, and the stories behind Sirius's kisses, and just a wonderful point of view.
