umadoshi has a lovely post about mermaids, monstrous and not, and her love for them, and the stories she tells.

lightbird talks about a Shakesville Question of the Day: If you were to be summoned by occult means, what three items would be placed in the summoning circle?

First, gather the center: saltwater, fresh from the ocean; paint smears, shades of blue; a story of monsters and women, pages worn, dirt stained, edges burned.

Pour a circle, gasoline. Breathe deep. Strike a match, sharp flash against your fingertips. Too close, step back, try again. Light the circle, bits of metal in the flames.

Wait, salt and water, fire and earth. Skin too tight, heat, singed hair.

I'll burst forth, broken, bloody, bruised.

rawles posted this: Along this same vein, deciding that you can defeat the misogyny of the source material/relationships in the source material by removing the women and replacing them with/focusing entirely dudes similarly reeks of bullshit. Because obviously the feminist way to deal with a misogynistic narrative is not to balance out relationships or illuminate and explore the female characters, but to ignore them! Riiiight.

The erasure of female characters from a narrative is never feminist. Period. The end.
