[fandom] Supernatural wank and authorial intent

So there's wank in Supernatural fandom, in which I participate very little, but enjoy the hell out of the show. I'm not going to link to the wank for a couple of reasons. One is that I think it's gotten enough attention, and I have no desire to add to it. Another is that I'm not actually here to talk about the wank, exactly, but a tangent.

I read the original post (hereafter P1) and though I didn't agree with the tone or the structure, I liked quite a few points brought up by the original poster (hereafter OP). OP said some interesting things (it's good to find and rec new or relatively unknown authors, different characterizations can be fun, it's good to seek out new experiences). I could roll with that, though I can see why people are responding to negatively to the P1.

Then, when someone told the OP that those very good points were being lost in the vitriol, the OP said that wasn't what zie meant at all.

This is why I don't believe that authorial intent is all that important to the interpretation of a piece of writing. The actual words used are much more important than what the author did or did not try to do. Also, this is why I would rather not know and draw my own conclusions because any sort of respect I had for the OP's ideas has been lost, especially because P1 is full of subtle, nasty comments about both specific people and general groups of fans. Without those points, it's more an attack than anything else.

I don't see anything wrong with venting about your fandom frustrations (or frandations, as I just typoed), and I am certainly not one to ask why can't we just all get along, but the OP directed it at Supernatural fandom in what looked like an attempt, however flawed, at opening a dialogue. That would benefit fandom. This? Just starts a wank.

I probably shouldn't be this amused*

Information via [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess, after the (recent as well as ongoing) plagiarism wank, it seems Cassie Claire's new book has both a teenage vampire slayer named Fray (as did Joss Whedon) and Darkhunters (which is also a series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, it seems, I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] crimson_keys can give more information on this).

People, I really think this could be absolute comedy gold, right up there with Anne Rice wank. The possibilities, the potential...comedy gold.

* Honestly, it's be amused** or angry because she's just another in a line of crap writers who have publishing contracts while the people for whom I edit don't all have on themselves but produce much better (and more original) writing. However, I try not to let such things get to me, because I have full faith in them, and the ones who haven't yet been published will be soon.

** Though I probably shouldn't be this amused. It's possible I've taken too many over-the-counter painkillers. Last night I fried my leg*** on the exhaust pipe of my motorcycle and it really hurts, but I'm still at work (though I left the bike at home), and trying to be able to walk and carry things and not scream every time something bumps it.

*** Yeah, I know, I've not had very good leg health for the past few weeks. It keeps me away from my computer, too, because by the time I get home I just want to doctor it, put my feet up, and not sit anymore. Last night I played Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for a few hours until I had to do some professional writing. Tonight I am skipping the gym, because it's a lower body day if I go, and I tend to bump that area (the back of my calf) anyway when I work out, because I'm a clutz. I still have some professional writing to do today, and some editing, but other than that, I'm taking it easy.

fandom, you are so so stupid sometimes

Woah, this is why I stay out of fandom.

I may have to cut the next person who uses "tranny" as an insult to a strong, in control, powerful woman.

Well, obviously I won't cut, but I will want to very much. I already want to very much. Plus the hatred just because of her reaction to another character. We don't know anything about them yet.

Mostly it's the name calling which is pissing me off.

However, Futurama has shrunk and they are inside Fry. I used to play games that I'd been swallowed by a giant and had to find a way to survive inside his stomach and other systems as I learned to move through the veins. Yes, I was a weird kid, but this episode is cool so far.

On my other journal, I have the actress playing her character in my mood theme and in icons. I wish they were here to express my love for her.

fandom: being invisible is a good thing

There are some days (many days) I'm glad I maintain an invisible position in most fandoms. I don't know how you all deal with all the kerfluffles. One of the best things about The Lost Boys is that we just don't have such things.

Basement cleaning today and then remix writing tonight. I'll probably finish it this evening. I need a beta ... I should email [livejournal.com profile] kphoebe and/or [livejournal.com profile] cabellicious to see if they have time and interest.

Last night as I tried to fall asleep, I wrote a long post about betaing, both being a beta and using a beta, but I overslept and it's gone now. I'll have to try to rewrite it later.

I also need to have J. put my desktop back together for a minute so I can pull that secret Dom story and finish it.
