Life: Question of the Day: Injuries

Saw this and couldn't resist answering.

[community profile] questionoftheday: What was the dumbest, most embarrassing injury you ever obtained?

I'm not actually embarrassed by it, but it does make for a funny story. I did marching band in high school and undergrad, specifically color guard for most of those years. One time in high school I was showing off some big tosses in my yard, lost the rifle in the sun, and stepped backward to safety -- except I had apparently also angled the toss back and promptly took a rifle butt between the eyes.

It's the only time I had to have stitches (that I remember; I had surgeries when I was still an infant), and I still have a faint scar from it between my eyes. (By far the least noticeable of my facial scars, but I'll talk about the others another time.) And I get a lot of mileage from the story.

I still have the rifle, too. The blood-stained tape is long gone.

I...may have done something similar with a marionette baton, though I didn't need stitches, I did have a mild concussion.

Concussion is decidedly unpleasant, and you don't even get a cool scar to show off.

(Majorette baton. I didn't clock myself in the head with a puppet. *despairs at self*)

During my high school and college soccer years, most of my injuries that caused me to miss games were non-soccer-related. The most bizarre was at the beginning of my sophomore season in college, when I sprained my knee getting into bed the night before preseason training was supposed to start. I was still not finished unpacking in my new dorm room and my foot was caught between two boxes. I missed more than half of the season because of it.

But I felt a little less embarrassed when I showed up before practice on crutches and someone else told me about his high school teammate who fell and broke his arm while putting on his pants in the locker room.

It wasn't my teammate, it was his past teammate. Don't feel too bad about it, it's one step farther removed from you. ;) At least I wasn't as embarrassed about my own bizarre injury.

LOL. That's great. I have a series of dumb injuries. Most of them coming from doing every day things, which considering that I ran marathons, rock climb, and take boxing lessons is kind of crazy.

I've broken my nose three times and my coccyx three times. None of them doing anything dangerous. I'm famous for getting really deep bruises on my legs from running into the corner of my desk going in and out of my office.

And I once broke a rib coughing.

I've done that! I have been pulling on something, my hand slips off and punches me right in the face. I hate that.

The coughing thing was bad. I had bronchitis, and osteopenia. But now, through years of working my ass off, I actually have normal bone density. So now I can cough and NOT break ribs!
