[fandom] Rogue

So I'm watching Rogue and wasn't sure at first (and it could still go super wrong later, a la Wolf Creek), but I like the characters so far, in particular Kate, played by Radha Mitchell. I love when I'm surprised by people in movies; I didn't expect her. She leads boat tours of crocodiles and is pretty awesome. Her accent is gorgeous, too.

(I just finished watching The Ruins which was so much better than I expected.)

According to this movie, crocs will learn your routine, so vary what time you get your water if you're camping near water.

"We're perfectly safe on this boat. They won't attack anything bigger than they are."

Well if that doesn't just sound like asking for trouble I don't know what does.

God, crocs have some beautiful movement.

Oh, one of the people on the boat tour went on it to spread the ashes of a loved one into the water. It's done really well; he's just this stoic man sitting in the back not saying much, and then he slips the ashes into the water in a moment of silence.

Plus this teen girl who's there with her parents is the only one who sees him, and she turns and holds her mother's hand after, in this really lovely quiet moment.

I actually just had to watch it again, it was such a beautiful little scene. God, who knew a horror movie about a killer crocodile would have such a heartbreaking moment. Well done.

Oh, now the boat has been wrecked by the giant croc and a guy was taken. Well then. That was an insanely quiet attack. Wow. I was afraid it would be the guy with the ashes, but it wasn't. It was the guy who stopped him from crossing the water.

They're trapped on a mud island that will be underwater when the tide comes in. They're just sitting there, so close to shore but unable to make it, waiting for death to come in the dark. This is AWESOME.

I also love that they have mobile phones and radios but no service.

Wow, it's already night and the water is rising fast. That happened quicker than I expected. The pacing is interesting.

Oh, shit, brave hot tattoo guy just got eaten. Oh, snap, and the tree is going to come loose and dump them all in the water - they're trying to climb across on a rope and it is failing miserably. Though I now foresee them trying to cross the tree later.

Get farther away from the water, that would be my suggestion, people! It's a big croc. Oh, look at that, I was right.

And good goddamn that's a big one. I knew it was big, but it's bigger than ever. Gorgeous.

Oh bull fucking shit. They're going to sacrifice Kate's dog to be bait? WHAT THE HELL MOTHER FUCKERS! I will cut you before I let you take my goddamn dog.

HA. They found something else.

I really feel bad for the teen girl from earlier. Apparently her mother has been sick for years, fighting to spend more time with her, and now the dad has been killed. There's a very good chance the mother won't be able to swim across fast enough after they trap the croc - if they can trap it - and that has to be terrifying and saddening all at once.

"I've been saying good-bye for the last three and a half years." The mom breaks my heart. And the guy with the ashes refuses to let her stay behind even though she doesn't know how to swim. He's going to help her go because she's got a really good kid - her daughter, who was the only one to see him pour the ashes. I just got teared up again.

OH GOD DAMN IT. I really liked Kate. Why do Radha's characters ALWAYS DIE? (Well, and then there's Silent Hill where, well, it's an extended sort of death versus life.

At least the dog survived - so far. And the girl and her mom and the guy with the ashes. I keep hoping Kate will pop up out of teh water, but there was so much blood. And also, dude and dog, why don't you get away from the water?

Also also, why didn't he die? This was my problem with Wolf Creek, too, that the main guy survived, though there I was frustrated because he'd done absolutely nothing while the entirety of the movie was about the girls fighting to survive, and they both died. At least here the guy surviving who should have died instead has at least done lots to try to keep the whole group alive.

And, I suppose there's still time for him to die. It's certainly a creepy scene right now as he tries to find the others in the woods - swamp? It's complicated. However, the full moon and tall trees make this look like a werewolf movie suddenly. Pretty.

The dog has run off and there's water. Crocodile? Don't sit on the ground, dumb ass, get up a tree or something.

I mean, you could be positive and assume the dog found people, but I prefer to expect death around every corner.

Now you're crawling into a tree? I see so many ways in which this could go wrong - starting with you falling down the tree into the water. Yes. Smart move there. You found the crocodile's - nest? I guess you call it that? - with torn bodies, and you still don't have the dog. Way to go.

Hey, if he gets eaten by the crocodile right now, this will totally be a dog sits in the light while the man gets eaten by the monster in the dark moment a la The Relic.

Aww. I knew the dog went to find Kate. This is sad. And also gross. She's pretty shredded. Poor dog. Oh what the hell are you doing now, Kevin? (The dog.) Oh, crap, you went to get eaten. Not even the goddamn dog can survive. And here comes the crocodile.

Wait, is Kate alive? Or does he just not want to leave her to get eaten? It's not really clear right here right now.

Oh, wait, she just made noise. She is alive - or he really slammed her down on that rock and Radha couldn't help herself.

Way to knock down a rock dumb ass. You kind of deserve to get eaten right now.

Hey, is the croc playing possum? This could be hilarious.

DUMB ASS YOU JUST PUT YOUR HAND IN ITS MOUTH. What the hell were you doing? You deserved to lose those fingers.

Okay, to be honest, the killing the croc scene was kind of awesome. And holy shit, dude survived and got Kate out. Look at that sunshine. Okay, so, the dog got eaten, but unless there's another giant crocodile - I'm waiting for one, to be honest - they're looking pretty good. Well, as long as they find a boat to take them out of there. And so long as Kate doesn't succumb to her wounds.

Oh, hey, a helicoptor and men with guns. Those things would have been handy last night, wouldn't they?

I really like Kate. There she is, bloody and broken, and this is the first thing she says. "Hey. What did you think of the tour?"

I love you, Kate. And I kind of want to write a fic about you and one of the other women on the tour. You were super nice to her, the smoker.

Wow. This was so much better than Wolf Creek, and so much better than I expected. I'm even a fan of cheesy maneating animals movies, but this has rocketed almost to the top of the list. (Nothing has yet defeated The Ghost and the Darkness, but this comes close.)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

The song playing during the credits is "Never Smile at a Crocodile" performed by the Paulette Sisters, and starts like this: Never smile at a crocodile, no you can't get friendly with a crocodile, don't be taken in, by his welcome grin, he's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin

I love this song. I haven't heard it in years. I used to have this sing-along videotape of Disney music, and I'm trying to remember if it was on that, because I have this clear memory of the video that would have gone with it.

And awesome. The jumping crocs were a part of the Spectacular Jumping crocodile Cruises. I want to go on one!

I purchased both The Ruins and Rogue together on a whim (and on deep discount) and I love both of them. That was a good movie buying day, apparently. Now I'm going to watch Can't Hardly Wait because I've been craving Seth Green. I watched part of season three of BtVS the other day, just for him.

Her accent is gorgeous, too.

Well, that makes me feel weirdly flattered. /Aussie

I haven't seen this movie because I don't like movies where things get eaten, but it's true about varying your habits - a guy got eaten in Queensland a few weeks ago (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24429429-421,00.html). Not that there's any crocodiles in the part of Australia where I live, but I'm a bit paranoid about them.

lol. I think I've finally found something I won't read.

Seth Green is definitely something to crave. He was on The Soup last Friday and I died of happy.

(I sadly have no Seth Green icons, so I shall use this one instead)
