[fandom] Did I really need another one?

Last weekend, I discovered this fun, cheesy show. Via Netflix's Movie Viewer, I watched a few episodes and enjoyed them. Today, I sat down to watch one more, and haven't been able to stop. We're talking hours here, time I should have been packing.

The show? This little thing some of you have probably heard of called Xena: Warrior Princess.

Talk about late to the game.

I'm about to start the season one episode "The Black Wolf" and I have some very general things to say.

Amazons = love
Xena + Gabrielle = love
Cheesy shows + Carla = love

I've not been hit with the desire to write anything (yet, and probably because I have been thinking so much about my femgenficathon story) but I think I'm going to want to read some fic soon.

(I had always intended to watch this show someday, because Victoria Pratt has a small role in it, and I'll watch lots of crappy things for her. House of the Dead 2? Oh yeah. However, I didn't expect to enjoy it so much, but I probably should have known. Women fighting, gods, swords, leather, cheesiness -- why didn't I think I'd love this?)

It does leave me with the urge to watch Cleopatra 2525 again.

ETA: I just found out Jennifer Sky was also in Xena, so that's two of the three from Cleopatra 2525. No wonder I want to watch the two shows together!

There's a good chance that Gina Torres is in Xena. I mean, she shows up in Hercules, for certain, and the casts/characters are so incestuous between the two.

Husband and I have been watching various Herc and Xena eps in the last few months via Netflix.

And, oh, Victoria Pratt! She makes me wish my Once a Thief tapes weren't so warped as to be unviewable. *pouts*

Doesn't she play Cleopatra on Xena? She's great as the pirate character on Hercules.

I haven't seen Once a Thief, though I do want to watch it for her. She's just marvelous.

Per some other comments below, Gina Torres does have a role in one episode of Xena, which makes me just giddy.

Apparently Jennifer Sky's role on Xena was pretty big, and only ended because she got the role on Cleopatra 2525. I found that interesting.

Hi. Passing by via a flist of a friend. *waves*

Xena's an awesome show, you're gonna love it. If you love femmeslash, you're *really* gonna love it. The subtext is one of the best reasons to watch.

And Gina Torres makes three. *g*

I do love femmeslash, and that's definitely what I like most about Xena so far; the Xena/Gabrielle slash practically writes itself. There are moments when I ask myself if it can really be considered subtext when it is so textual!

Yay! I like the trio crossover in the actors.

Xena has fantastic parody episodes, as did Hercules. Any time they sing and dance, or are in alternate universese, I watched the ep a couple times in a row.

There are singing and dancing episodes?

Oh, I just can't wait!

Thank you for letting me know, I'm even more excited about this now!

Hercules had a great ballroom dance episode, with a continuing character in other episodes (Michael Hurst playing a female character, like a pantomime archetype).

Xena also has eps that feature dance, as both the leads can. One of my favorites was the beauty pageant episode. I think it was a contest for "Miss Known World", complete with MC singing and a talent competition.

I'm always late to the party. However, Xena is one of the few fandoms I actually participated in in 'real time'. It's such a fun show.

Gina Torres does indeed play Cleopatra in the S3 episode 'King of Assassins'. But she's much more interesting in the S4 Hercules ep 'Yes Virginia, there is a Hercules'

You're too early on in S1 to appreciate my additions to your notes, but you will:

Ares = Love
Callisto = Love
Aphrodite = Love

During my perusal of the Wikipedia files on Xena, I learned that Callisto has a very crazy storyline, and I can't wait to see it and love it.

It makes me wish I had more time to marathon through the available seasons.
