[fandom] the good, the bad, and the undead

The good: It looks like maybe Friday Night Lights will be renewed.

The bad: I'm not sure I can keep watching Supernatural. I've just about reached my limit of women who are victims or enemies every. goddamn. time. Every. single. woman. I'm really quite sad about this, because I love Supernatural, I love the sibling relationship, I love the monster stories, I love the music, and I love the Impala, but I don't like the way they portray women, I've never liked it, and I'm really disappointed and frustrated.

The undead: From the directors of Undead, which is an awesome Australian horror movie (with some fantastic portrayals of women, by the way), there will now be Daybreakers. The synopsis:

Hawke will play a researcher in the year 2017, when a plague has transformed most of the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human or find a blood substitute before time runs out. Meanwhile, a covert group of vampires makes a discovery that has the power to save the human race.

I hear you re: SPN. I've only caught the show a few times, but every time it's always some woman in need of rescuing by the pretty!strong!men. There just isn't any other stuff about the show that appeals to me enough to tune in ever again.

I totally agree with you on Supernatural. I'll admit that I'm only a casual viewer of it, but I've noticed that about every episode I've seen. Every one. So I can only imagine how frustrating it would be seeing it week after week for two seasons.

I just read about Daybreak the other day, and I am already completely psyched to see this movie. It sounds totally wicked. Vampires! Yay! And it totally reminded me of another movie I was looking forward to seeing but had forgotten about Perfect Creature (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403407/), another awesome sounding vampire flick with Saffron Burrows (rowr) and Dougray Scott.

I hear you on the Supernatural women thing. It bothers me too.

Oh, and have you noticed that they're all perfectly shaped women? You would think Dean and Sam just let the heavy women die because I don't even think I've ever seen somebody not tremendously skinny walking in the background, let alone be the main focus of the show.

To be honest, SPN has kind of lost me. The monster of the week format, the lack of recurring characters, the same girl being killed/saved every week. At this point, I'm going dude, hire Joss Whedon to write a woman for you, seriously (and I'm even more annoyed that I can't think off the top of my head A WOMAN to hire to write a woman). It almost feels repetitive and I'll watch if it's on, but I don't tune in anymore. That makes me really sad, because I waited and waited for SPN to come on. But oh well. I still love my boys, the tunes, the Impala, but I move on~

Yes! You've pretty much nailed what I enjoy so much about Supernatural, as well as why I was so disappointed with most of this last episode. Seperate the brothers, leave Dean and the Impala offscreen for much of the episode, and you're suddenly missing almost all of what the show does well. Put Sam by himself in a scenario where the writers have to try and write heavy interaction with secondary characters (including the hapless female victim and the woman who turns out to be evil after all in the same episode) and it just highlights the stuff at which it is less than good.

Yes! You put into words exactly why I disliked part one of the pilot so much. Once they stripped away all the things I enjoy, all that was left was the stuff I hate, and now it's colored how I view the show as a whole even worse than before.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to watch it this fall or not. I imagine I'll be busy with school, especially since it will be my first semester back in years, so I won't have a lot of time as it is. Supernatural may not make the cut, and that makes me sad and frustrated, because with just a few tweaks, it could be this excellent show.

Er, of course "part one of the pilot" should read "part one of the season finale" because I am, apparently, typing while half-asleep.

Sadly, portrayal of women is teh biggest flaw and pitfall of the show, which is such a shame because I love the show pretty much otherwise, and also because the portrayals of men and masculinity are subversive in their own way. And I would like to think Gamble would know better than to make women annoying DiDs.
