[fandom] BSC in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Fans grow up, stay loyal to the Baby-sitters Club".

It's a fun article, and the best part about reading the paper today.

One of my favorite lines: "Whether you're bossy like Kristy, shy like Mary Anne or diabetic like Stacey -- and everyone thought they were diabetic after reading about Stacey -- there's a match for each reader."

So true. Everyone did think they were diabetic because of Stacey.

I also like: [Matt] Zakozek even refers to character Mallory Pike's experience with infectious mononucleosis when discussing his own illness in his sophomore year. "She made it sound like some mysterious 19th-century disease," he said. It turned out not to be so romantic.

Are you, per chance, a member of [livejournal.com profile] babysittersclub? I saw that article this morning, and I loved it. That line, especially... I was convinced I was diabetic for at least 2 years. I also liked that they mentioned the BSC HEadquarters blog - I love that site!

I'm sorry, I've never read those books, but this had me laughing for at least five minutes. I had a similar experience with Lurlene McDaniel's books. I was convinced, the entire time I was in middle school, that I had leukemia. It was okay, though. I was going to go to cancer camp and die valiantly.

Oh my God, I was so convinced I had leukemia. (And diabetes, of course). My mom was kind of shocked when she found that out a couple of years ago, and I tried to explain that it was okay because so was every girl my age in the entire country.

LOL Every time I'd get a bruise, LEUKEMIA, bleed after I cut myself shaving, LEUKEMIA.

Hell, I have all the symptoms NOW.

I should sue Lurlene McDaniel.

I didn't read McDaniel's books, but you guys have made me really happy with all your talk of childhood hypochondria. I had a double dose of the diabetes fear, from the books, of course, but also because my best friend had diabetes, so it seemed like it was everywhere!

One Lurlene McDaniel book, and I was DONE. Some girl's sister had leukemia (which narrows the book down to, oh... everything she ever wrote). I only remember one scene - the sister had a nosebleed in the middle of the night and she was covered with blood. Every nosebleed I ever got after that, I was convinced I was dying.

Diabetes AND leukemia... I was in bad shape.

I am, though I didn't see the post there until I went to post about it myself. It was a really nice surprise to open the paper and stumble on it, and the article was really cute.

I like that blog, too, but I keep forgetting to read it! I was happy to have a reminder.
