Breaking into the conversation because I wanted to say a few things. I hope it's OK. :)
I can relate to Nate, because I feel like my life would shred like that if I lost my child too. And every time they talk about Sam, my heart breaks a bit. (When Nate goes back to his apartment to retrieve Sam's family portrait and then gets caught by Sterling, my heart breaks so much.) I don't hate Nate; I just think he's a SOB. I think he's one of the rare cases of asshole that I like - which is weird for me, because I hate House and I'm just done with McKay and I'm only good with MCU Tony Stark because RDJ is an unbelievably talented actor and can sell me on the depths of his emotion. (Though don't get me started on Civil War. Can we please be over Tony Stark's daddy issues already?)
Also: Maggie! She had, like, four or five episodes total and I love her an unreasonable amount, especially given that she's Sophie's "respectable" friend that happens to get tutoring in grifting from Sophie. I desperately want to see more of this outside of the season one two-parter at the end. ("You learn and you con.")
I have complicated headcanon that I wish I had time to write about Nate having to share Sophie with Maggie every now and again (he is utterly terrified by this) and a mental story I have zero time to write about Nate and Sophie post-series accidentally getting Maggie caught up in some kind of art theft shenanigans and then all of them getting drunk and mostly-accidentally falling into bed all together at least once. (Not as a relationship, just as a thing.) But mostly on a social level, Maggie and Sophie go out without him and do all the art stuff that Nate only did on an insurance level, but that Maggie and Sophie have a deep and abiding love of.
