I agree that the nominations period is all-too-short (though I did vote for more writing time). I think that the AO3 coding stuff (so noms could happen on the new codebase) forced the timing. Now that the coding's done, hopefully next year can get started earlier.
(There's been drama? I only recall the Worldbuilding bit, which they went the right way on, imo.)
