Fic Rec: "The Pen and the Sword", Anne of Green Gables series, an epistolary story set during World War II which broke my heart.

I particularly love this line, which will make more sense once you've read the story: "Careful, love," Border says with a smile that turns your gut to quicksilver. Touching his side, just above the hip, he looks at you. "It's a bit tender."
