[fandom] Remix Titles
There are many things I should be doing right now. Instead I will talk about titles, because Remix/Redux has me thinking about them a lot. I think part of the appeal of Remix to me is the title aspect; certainly the stories I've written which I enjoy most have titles I love. This doesn't always happen outside of the Remix, either.
So, let's talk about titles, and not just Remix titles, either.
+ "Ten Slayers Who Never Were (The Of All the Women in All the World Mix)" BtVS/Various Fandoms
I wrote this for
nikitangel's birthday last year. I knew going in that I wanted to write about what would happen if different characters in different fandoms became Slayers. (So I didn't enjoy season seven all that much, but it has certainly led to some fantastic story ideas.)
The things I like about this title are that a) it tells you exactly what it is and b) I got to use the parenthetical mix title. I love that, which is why I love Remix titles so much. Not to mention I think good parenthetical titles add a lot to the main title, and I think here it does. All these fandoms, all these women, and these ten are Slayers. Interesting.
+ "She's Gonna Save the World Before Dinner (The Mirror in the Hall Mix)" BtVS/Making Out
This is a similar set-up, though with only one fandom in which there are suddenly Slayers. I like the title here for the same reasons as above. I particularly like the mix title here, because the story is in two parts, one part per sister, showing two different scenarios about these siblings becoming Slayers. Not at the same time, of course. So it really is kind of a reflection of what might have been in situation a and in situation b.
+ "Snake in the Grass (Wearing Dog Skin)" The Breed
I wrote this for the Twice Told Fandom ficathon, and the picture I received was a close-up of grass. Right away I knew I wanted to write about betrayal, both within the group and within the self, about the dangers hidden in something beautiful. Hence the Snake in the Grass part. Of course, The Breed is almost a werewolf story - it's a story about mutated dogs, and how that mutation is passed, and how it changes the dogs and the people. It seemed fitting that the Wearing Dog Skin was more of an afterthought, still right there in front of your face, but the betrayal is more frontal.
+ "Into Her Dreams (Vampire Edit)" The Hollows
I'm not entirely sure why I love this title so much. I think it is because the story is all about dreams, real and imaginary, and the way the source material gives us one perspective but the story gives another, the vampire's perspective, and that changes everything, even if it's only in her own dreams, in her spiral into insanity.
Finally we've hit the Remix titles.
+ "oh, the bleakness of the moon (the waning, waxing remix)" Harry Potter
This was written for the Remux Remix, where we were given a drabble and then expanded on it. The original drabble was "Oh, Bleakness" and was a brief moment between Remus and Peter. The Remix is that scene, expanded forward and backward, with Remus's werewolf threaded throughout. His life changes depending on the wax and the wane of the moon, his life gets smaller for awhile after he loses the others, and then gets larger as he gains them back. I think the title captures this, and the way the moon and his werewolf are ever present, gaining strength and losing it.
+ "sins of the flesh (tastes like chicken remix)" Harry Potter
This is one of my favorite remix titles, hands down. It's a Remix story about Remus giving in to the werewolf, and what leads to it, and all the ways he plays at being human but really isn't. The original title was "Sins of the Flesh" and I knew right away I wanted to keep it, but also add a creepy, vaguely disgusting edge to it with the remix title.
+ "Time is Running Away (The Dream a Little Dream Remix)" Harry Potter
This is another Remix story. The original title was "The Dog Star" and it was a lovely story. I wanted to expand it into Sirius's dreams and insanity and the way his life is measured in stop-time jail and all he has are his memories, and dreams, and things which might have been true but aren't, or were once but have changed.
And finally
+ "Count (the Burn) Down (The Stop, Drop, and Roll Remix)" XMM
The original was "Countdown". I love this because, since it's Pyro, it's all about fire. It's also all about the way he was one thing in X3, and all the steps he took to get there, the ways he shed his old self, his old name, his old rules. And also, did I mention fire? I love the Remix title to this because of the whole set things on fire, stop drop and roll thing, of course, but I also love the way the story counts down Pyro back into John.
So now I really need to be doing something productive. I want to stay at home, have some ice cream, and work on this year's Remix, because I now have two potential stories to do, but that won't happen until Saturday night or Sunday.
So, let's talk about titles, and not just Remix titles, either.
