Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty

Is Justin not the most adorable kid, ever? He's so supportive of Betty.

This show is deeply problematic for me. On the one hand, it encompasses so much of the things I hate about real life, the obsession with beauty, the way women are taught and encouraged to compete, to belittle, to betray each other, etc.

On the other hand, I am in love with Betty and her family. Completely and utterly, after less than twenty minutes. It's not just that I love America Ferrera (which I do, don't get me wrong), but the character, the family, the way they interact. The father and daughter relationship between Betty and her father, the way Hilda and Betty deal with each other, Justin supporting Betty and giving her pep talks when he's just a kid--it's hitting all my favorite things about family.

Also, Ashley Jensen as Christina has an awesome accent. I have high hopes for that group of friends.

Yay! KT Tunstall is the closing song! I like it.

FOUR MINUTES UNTIL SUPERNATURAL!

So yeah. I'm going to keep watching for awhile. I can deal with problematic, I think.

Every word you said (typed?) about Ugly Betty is exactly how I feel. I hated the way Betty was being treated and I'm not a fan of sitting there feeling uncomfortable while watching a TV show, but I couldn't help but love Betty, her family, and her friend with the cool accent right away. So yeah, I'm going to keep watching for now.
